The Celtics used unconventional lineups to close out Sunday’s win at Orlando, as Jordan Walsh, Hugo Gonzalez and Luka Garza all saw more fourth quarter playing time than Jaylen Brown, writes Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. All three players contributed to the 111-107 victory, but the biggest shot belonged to Walsh, who sank a three-pointer with 12.4 seconds left that gave Boston a five-point lead. Walsh, a 27.8% three-point shooter for his career, assumed Brown would take the crucial shot and was surprised to get the ball.
“I was like, ‘Oh, my goodness,’” he said. “I didn’t even celebrate it or anything. I was just in the moment.”
With four rotation players gone from last season’s team and Jayson Tatum recovering from a torn Achilles, coach Joe Mazzulla knew coming into the season that he would have to rely on unproven talent. He has been experimenting through the first 11 games of the season, with lineups looking much different from one game to the next, and he recognizes the need to give young players a chance to succeed.
“That’s just what we have to do to build trust in those moments, and it’s a credit to those guys,” he said. “They delivered, and that’s it.”
There’s more on the Celtics:
- Anfernee Simons bounced back from a poor game on Friday by scoring 25 points in his first 14 minutes to help Boston build an early lead, Himmelsbach adds. Simons didn’t score in the second half, but Mazzulla said his early outburst forced Orlando to change its pick-and-roll coverage, which created better shots for other players. “He’s one of those guys when he gets in a rhythm like that, there’s nothing you can do to stop him,” Garza said. “So we’re just trying to feed him and give him actions so he can stay comfortable and stay in a rhythm.”
- Garza enjoyed his best game since joining the Celtics with season highs of 16 points and eight rebounds, per Brian Robb of MassLive. Robb notes that Garza shot just 1-of-10 in his past four games and Boston was outscored by 43 points in his 46 minutes, so he needed a good performance to ensure continued playing time. “We all want to get out there, all of us, you know, we all play this game for a reason,” he said. “We want to be on the floor and we know when we are on the floor, that to make an impact we gotta play hard. Effort is a non-negotiable, so that’s what we try to bring every time we step on the floor and do the best of what we got.”
- Backup center Xavier Tillman didn’t play on Sunday, but he was back on the active roster after missing Friday’s game for personal reasons, per Souichi Terada of MassLive.
Simons for Naz Reid makes both teams better. Minn needs scoring and Boston benifits from a veteran center to stretch the floor. Saleries match.
That will never happen. Haha. Salaries match. Abilities don’t.
@noname617
I think it would definitely make the Celtics better, but the Wolves are already playing 2 SGs in Ant and Donte, so I don’t really see how another SG helps them since their problem is at PG.
Wolves “checked in” about Morant
Ja career apg is 7.4/gm (including 2 years at 8.1,) Simons is at 3.2
Remember all the picks the Magic gave up to fix their 3 pt shooting in the trade for Bane? He’s at 29% from three so far, and Cole Anthony who they offloaded is at 32%. Even worse is their having signed FA Tyus Jones, who’s at 13% from three and is now their 9th option.
The Magic having such a slow start was unexpected.
Cole Anthony has been great for Milwaukee. His shooting splits may not wow, but when he plays, he always does it very well, and Milwaukee win the minutes. He has a positive +- in all but one game for them. He rebounds very well for a guard, he’s quite creative, efficient around the rim and is a good defender.
Memphis could have used a guy like that.
Orlando Magic are not ready for prime time just yet, if they can’t beat a team that throws out a 4th quarter lineup of Walsh/Gonzalez/Garza then it’s going to be a troubling season for them. I like the deal for Bane, but this is a team that should be talked about more and heavily scrutinized because of what they gave up for Bane.
Maybe a swap of Dennis Schroeder for Jonathan Issac will work for both teams? Kings get a front line player who is defensive minded and Magic get another ball handler and shot creator who will be on the floor in the 4th quarter during crunch time. Salaries match, it’s just about pick compensation?
Simons for Issac and bitdza
Magic need a guy who doesn’t need the ball to be effective. Simons is a bad fit, they need a guy who can handle the ball too. Not a bad trade but I think chemistry wise, it wouldn’t work for Orlando.
No way Orlando would do that.
Bigs who can play NBA minutes are valuable. Every big with a pulse got signed to a contract this summer.
While plenty of small guards who just dribble the ball and shoot jumpers are out of the league.
Celtics went from 2 down to 11 points up with a lineup of Pritchard, White/Simons, Walsh, Garza, and Gonzalez. Some were replaced by starters, and the lead fell to 2. Big shots at the end were from White from 3, Garza putback, and Walsh from 3. People need to pay more attention to +/-. Brown was -17 last night, but headlines all said “led by Brown’s 27 points”. Give credit where it is due. Scoring a lot of poinrs doesn’t Necessarily win games, teamwork does.
Many assume when a NBA star is out, or subs are in, that NBA team should automatically lose. I disagree. Those are unknown and risky & games. Jordan Walsh, Luka Garza and Hugo Gonzalez helping us win last was a fresh example.
For what its worth, Brown has the second lowest plus minus on the team. link to statmuse.com
Yay! Jordan & Hugo got minutes in both games against Orlando and showed their worth both times! Coach Joe got besmirched in his first couple years, unfairly, for not developing youngsters. He didn’t have to. Now we see Coach’s flexible.
And Anfernee has been just great! Living up to his rep as a 3-point star. Hope we can keep him although the plan was for him to play great making another team with cap space need him. #1 goal; get below the tax. Can’t just match salaries.
I honestly want them to figure out a future PF starter. I think Tatum should be playing SF (his original position and Brown SG.
Leaving Simons as the odd man out.
Queta needs to step up the production
Where is Tillman?
