4:03 pm: Brunson appears to have avoided a major injury, as he has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 ankle sprain, as first reported by Ian Begley of SNY.tv (via Twitter) and confirmed by several other outlets (all Twitter links here).
While Brunson will be out Friday against Miami, he will be evaluated on a daily basis moving forward, which suggests he probably won’t miss an extended period of time.
8:50 am: Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson sustained a right ankle injury late in the fourth quarter of a lopsided home loss to Orlando on Wednesday and was seen wearing a walking boot on his right foot and using crutches as he exited Madison Square Garden, writes Stefan Bondy of The New York Post.
Brunson didn’t speak to reporters after the loss and head coach Mike Brown didn’t have an update on the star guard’s status, so it’s not yet clear whether the injury will force him to miss time.
Since arriving in New York in 2022, Brunson has been quite durable, appearing in at least 65 regular season games in each of his three seasons with the Knicks. However, as Bondy points out, the 29-year-old missed roughly a month near the end of the 2024/25 season after badly spraining the same ankle.
Bondy also notes that the situation in which Brunson injured his ankle on Wednesday opens up Brown to some criticism. After former Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau made a habit of leaving his starters in games that seemed out of reach, Brown told reporters during training camp that he wouldn’t be afraid to “throw the towel in early” in those scenarios in order to keep his best players as fresh and healthy as possible.
The Knicks were trailing by 16 points when Brunson suffered the injury with 1:54 left to play.
And dowwwwn goes the knicks season!!! No wonder Al was so mad at the Warriors for clamping Wemby.
For the record, I am not celebrating his injury. That stinks. I want Brunson healthy so Steph can cook his team for winning clutch POY over him, when Steph deserved it more for being better in late/close games (clutch).
It’s a walking boot lol. Just precaution. Don’t mention the season with injuries man. Don’t go there. I don’t want to see any Warrior or Cavs player go down …..
Best to give him a couple gms rest. McBride has to own the backup PG role. I got faith in him.
Yup, good luck to JB – I want GSW to cook the full strength Knicks so I can gloat to you lol
Get offline bro, the real world is out there, not in here.
Knicks best player out for a extended time means Towns needs to step up big and be the leader of the team.
Sad but this could a blessing in disguise for the Knicks, they need to be able to play without Brunson
Nope I love the Knicks they have no chance at a championship. Even if they make the finals they will get crushed. They have already been exposed against good teams. They don’t match up well against the magic either with towns and Bronson in the game. Their defensive liabilities. They have no bench. I’ve been saying this for a minute Clarkston will cook against the sorry teams but in meaningful games is not the same player anymore. YB I’ll give 1 more month but he is looking like dud
To say they have no shot is crazy. If they are healthy they are a top 5 team, top 8 at the worst. Give them time to gel with a new coach and they will be a team no one wants to play in the playoffs
Being a top 8 team is not the same a competing. I’m not just saying that to say that they have to many holes and no bench. The towns trade cap them and they are too small in the back court. Towns is great at the 5 but with Bronson they have to hide him on d and need a shot blocker. When Bronson goes out the have no backup playmaker. And their best asset is deuce doesn’t make enough money to bring a real piece back. So no they don’t have a chance. They can’t beat Den or OKC. They will pick roll them to death.
Like is said I love the Knicks but if you watch film you will see how they will be exposed first good teams and good coaching. I can break it down exactly if you really wanting me to from an X’s and O’s o standpoint.
Also not overreacting to one game. I said this a couple weeks ago and then they had an easy stretch where they played four games. Those teams aren’t expected to go anywhere
Watching OKC play nobody has a chance at a championship unless OKC has multiple injuries.
Too soon. I admit they’re impressive, but it’s a long season, and IMO the Nuggets are capable of beating them in the playoffs.
If OKC stays healthy in playoffs I don’t see anyone beating them in a 7 game series.
Don’t disagree re: them being the team to beat, but their insane depth gives them an extra advantage during the regular season. Come playoff time when rotations tighten, that advantage will shrink.
TWolves get Morant …… Rockets get Jrue …..
Nuggets. Those three scenarios have best chance.
Thunder so far look like best team. Not even a full squad. You will need good depth to beat them.
@arc89
The Nuggets almost did last season with multiple injured players.
Repeating is hard, and there’s a long way to go.
Thunder had an injured player as well. In fact he still is injured.
While true, that doesn’t change the facts I posted.
OKC is the heavy favorite for good reasons, but so were the Celtics a year ago.
Denver almost beat them last year. They went to two game 7 and Denver is better and has options to tweak. OKC is really good but not a home run to win. I do have OKC and Denver as 1a 1b. This is a slight gap. If Houston gets a point guard they can possibly get in the race.
The Knicks are far from that. I believe the Bucks could beat the Knicks same as Orlando. However neither of those teams can beat OCK or Denver.
That’s a fact ….
Absolutely no reason why he was in the game down 15 with less than 2 minutes to play. I get you have competition and stuff, but his is reckless and malpractice at it’s best. When I saw the injury live, it didn’t look good. Hoping JB comes back from it and is his productive self rest of the year, even if they are Knicks lol.
I agree, Brown should have pulled him, they weren’t going to come back and win.
Hopefully it’s a sprain, and not ligament damage requiring surgery.
Yeah …. they kill Thibs for that.
Just get healthy. Time for new bench to show up.
why is nobody ripping Brown?
if this was tibs all hell would be breaking loose.
Hopefully it’s not to serious. Brunson, the NOVA guy is one of my top 5 favorite player to watch. Wishing him a speedy recovery
I had no idea a human ankle had that much flexibily, wobble wobbled like a drunk girl in stilettos.
I have always believed in team ball. And loved it when we got Bridges. Who I consider one of best 2way players around. Knicks roll with Jalen. He is not just a leader. He is their alpha. Bridges has to step up his scoring. And be that consistent scorer to take pressure off Jalen. He is too passive imo. Towns is another one. That needs to shed that soft label. That has followed him since Kentucky. Let Jalen heal and give him extra time. Force this team to show out without Jalen. Time to man up. Show you are worthy of contender label. Brown “all eyes on you”
Get well Jalen. Time for your team to show you they got your back.
Brown is Thibs but with a more inventive offense and worse defensive scheming. We all saw this coming a mile away. Obviously Rose was comfortable with that, and these are the types of consequences which can follow when you bring in a head coach with many of the same faults as the old one. He has to take some blame too.
When a Coach blames his players for a loss and takes no blame himself it’s a bad sign. Brown was joking with Refs and opposing players during the game, can you imagine Thibs doing that? I am not a huge Thibs fan but discarding him for Brown made no sense. I thought they had a plan but they did not. Time will tell…
“ This is a positive sign for Knicks fans. Brunson being off crutches means his recovery is moving in the right direction.”
Knicks say Brunson will travel with team on 5gm road trip. So could play there. No need to rush player. Coach please, keeping him off team an extra gm or two is no big deal. I want to see McBride play some point. The good thing is it’s not as bad as last year. When he was out a month. Big win last night. Just get Healthy Jalen we got you. 🙏
Knicks in Miami Monday night.
