Bulls guard Josh Giddey recently underwent a successful arthroscopy on his right ankle, the team announced today (via Twitter).
According to the Bulls, the plan is for Giddey to resume basketball activities in approximately three months, which would be in mid-August. The expectation is that the 23-year-old will be ready to go for the start of training camp in late September.
Giddey was limited to 54 appearances in 2025/26, but his lengthiest absences were the result of hamstring issues. Still, he has dealt with repeated right ankle problems over the past two years too, dating back to when he first injured the ankle at the 2024 Olympics while playing for Australia’s national team. He said back in September 2024 that he sustained a ruptured ATFL (anterior talo-fibular ligament); since then, he has sprained the ankle multiple times.
While Chicago’s roster figures to undergo some major changes this offseason under new head of basketball operations Bryson Graham, Giddey looks like one of the few players whose spot should be relatively safe.
The former Thunder lottery pick, who has been the Bulls’ starting point guard since being traded to Chicago during the 2024 offseason, set new career highs in points (17.0), assists (9.1), and rebounds (8.3) per game this past season while posting a shooting line of .448/.364/.763. He negotiated a long-term contract with the team as a restricted free agent last offseason and still has three years and $75MM left on that deal.

I guess taping his ankles which has worked for about 80 years never even occurred to anyone. Ah Bulls Medical Staff. Gotta love em.
Or Giddey doesn’t want his ankles taped.
Some players find it restrictive and harder to do things like cut and make quick change of direction movements.
Some players also find that as the tape deteriorates from stress sweat it becomes a nuisance to have to constantly come out of games and retape
He clearly wears braces in the above photo. Is that not a sufficient alternative to taping?
Ummmmm it would seem the answer is obvious. No.
Oh thanks, Mr. Smartass. But the question was not: Did Giddey’s measures prevent an ankle injury? …. smh
Sorry was this mentioned in this article? Couldnt find it
Still, if he chooses not to tape his ankles he has to strengthen them (and it seems like he doesnt lol)
Was this the injury he sustained when Mitchell crossed him up?
Trade Giddey, a bunch of 2nds, future picks and Patrick Williams for Zach LaVine and the 6th pick
Well I would say Giddey and Williams together are neutral. Giddey would get you probably a mid-level first, but it would cost as much or more to dump PWill. Lavine might be close to neutral as well. He is overpaid, but on an expiring and in the meantime he can still score for you.
So that leaves trading a bunch of future first and 2nd round picks for this year’s #6. If they are picks that won’t be in the lottery, then it would take a bunch of them to equal a chance at Wagler or Acuff. I’d say 3 or 4 low level 1sts? As far as 2nd rounders, maybe 2-3 mid or high-level would equal one low-level first?
So I would say the trade seems fair, with equal value on both sides. As far as strategically, I guess it depends on what Graham wants to accomplish. If he doesn’t like Giddey, then sure, get rid of him, and use it as a way to clear Williams’ contract.
I don’t get the rest of the deal though, where you want to trade a bunch of lower grade picks for one top pick. What I hear about Graham is that he is supposed to be a great talent evaluator. So wouldn’t it be better for the Bulls if he had a lot of bites at the apple? He could set himself apart much better I think by having several chances at picking an All Star from the bottom half of the draft, than by making the right choice at #6.
Weren’t Bulls fan demanding that they resign Giddey in the offseason and now they already want him gone? Lmao
