The Hawks remain “very intrigued” by the possibility of acquiring Mavericks big man Anthony Davis in a trade, insider Chris Haynes reported during an ‘NBA on Prime’ broadcast (hat tip to Real GM).
Haynes indicated that a potential deal involving the Hawks would not include Trae Young, who could become a free agent after the season if he declines his $48,967,380 option. Instead, the package for Davis could include 2024 top pick Zaccharie Risacher.
“Dallas would likely want expiring deals, young assets, and picks – and probably, likely to include number one pick from last season Zach Risacher,” Haynes said.
If Young and his $46MM salary isn’t part of the potential deal, Kristaps Porzingis‘ $30,731,707 expiring contract would be a necessary component.
Brett Siegel of Clutch Points reported earlier this week that the Hawks had checked in on Davis. However, Siegel also reported that there has been no momentum in those talks and there was a sense that Atlanta is more likely to target a lower-salary replacement if the team builds a deal around Porzingis‘ expiring contract.
Adding Davis would be an “all-in” move for the Hawks, considering his contract numbers. He’s making $54,126,45 this season and $58,456,566 next season. Davis also holds a player option of $62,786,682 for the 2027/28 season.
Haynes added that a team acquiring Davis would likely have to sign him to a contract extension. That would involve significant risk, considering Davis’ injury history. He’s currently dealing with a mild right groin strain.
Davis has only appeared in 16 games this season and, outside of his 76 regular-season appearances with the Lakers in 2023/24, hasn’t seen action in more than 62 games since the 2018/19 season.
Davis would significantly boost the Hawks’ defense. Atlanta has falled below .500 at 15-17 during its current five-game slide. The Hawks have allowed 126 or more points in their last seven losses. They have allowed opponents to shoot 47.8 percent from the field this season, ranking 23rd in the league in that category.
MAvs will accept 2033 2nd rd pick & bucket of fried chicken
That 2033 second rounder would have to be top 55 protected
Dallas is a toilet nba team now and adding Risacher for AD would make the Luka trade even worse somehow. Moving him for a #1 pick from a down draft with rookie years already used up and needing paid to keep in a few years if he ever even winds up anything more than just a 5th starter. Dallas has more reasons to drink than any other city. Even AD for Young would be one of the worst trades ever. Luka for Young would be the real view and Young is an even worse defender than Luka.
Warriors salary matching
Draymond
Kuminga
Podz
Santos
Total $54.2 million
3 young players for AD, all time great
If Podz replays with pick, Warriors are at 2nd apron, hard cap
Like the warriors need another injury prone player.
Atlanta is not this stupid. Chicago with Vuc being swapped is Dallas best choice. AD is from Chicago.
Don’t say that. There’s a Bulls fan here who wouldn’t give a brick oven pizza for AD. Thinks the Chi connection is dumb. Bulls have the most expiring money next yr. They could make an offer.
This guy has been tossing out a lot of slop this weekend.. about the Warriors, now Hawks. Does anyone really believe that a team out there is going to take Mr. Brittle himself and bail out the Mavs? Come on, it just doesn’t pass the smell test.. not at with AD’s contract. You take a chance on someone like that when he’s on a team friendly deal, not at $50M per for 3 years.
Mavs want to move AD. They can wait till Feb 5.
Or even next year. In order to get a better deal…..
Mavs could shut down AD for year, pull a Sixer Process. And get a top 10 lottery pick. With Kyrie coming back. They can load up for next year.
I guess Mavs would take Kristap’s back due to expiring contract and some 2nds. They either buyout KP or play him minimal, this is the same staff that moved him.
I still can’t see Mavs trading AD until Kyrie plays with them.
Anthony Davis 32 yrs old with the broken-down body of a 50 yr old. He is way to brittle to help any team. Now if the Mavs would take a 2nd round in the year 204o, if I was the Atlanta GM, I would consider making a deal, that way it won’t affect or hinder the Atlanta roster for the next 14 years.
