After shedding significant salary and creating a $28.9MM trade exception in their blockbuster deal sending Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah, the Grizzlies are viewed as a potential landing spot for Raptors center Jakob Poeltl, reports Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints (Twitter link).
The Raptors have been discussing a possible Domantas Sabonis trade with the Kings, who have no interest in Poeltl, so a third team would likely be required if Toronto and Sacramento hope to get those talks over the finish line. Poeltl’s contract, which runs through 2029/30 and has more than $100MM left on it, is widely viewed as a negative asset, so Memphis would need to be incentivized to take it on.
The Bulls are also considered a potential facilitator for Poeltl, according to Siegel (Twitter link), but as things stand, Chicago would have to send out salary to accommodate the veteran center’s incoming $19.5MM cap hit, whereas Memphis wouldn’t.
We have more trade rumors on a busy day around the NBA:
- While it was essentially a given, based on reports that the Warriors weren’t including Jimmy Butler in their offer for Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Slater of ESPN confirms that Golden State has included 14th-year veteran Draymond Green in active trade conversations with Milwaukee. Without Butler involved, the Warriors would need to use Green’s $25.9MM salary for matching purposes in order to have a shot at Giannis.
- The Heat have expressed “some level” of interest in Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant in recent weeks, according to Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald (Twitter link), but their focus remains squarely on Antetokounmpo. One source who spoke to Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel (subscription required) suggested Miami figures to remain involved in both fronts, since it wouldn’t be impossible for the team to land both players if Memphis’ asking price is low enough.
- The Timberwolves also remain in on Antetokounmpo, but they’re exploring other possible avenues on the trade market and have a lot of balls up in the air, per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic (Twitter link), who cautions that Minnesota’s cost-cutting deal involving Mike Conley doesn’t necessarily mean the team will be acquiring Giannis.
- After agreeing to acquire Jackson from Memphis, the Jazz may not be done, tweets Tony Jones of The Athletic. Siegel (Twitter link) hears that Utah remains “very active,” with Jusuf Nurkic and his $19.3MM expiring contract included in the team’s trade discussions.
- Mavericks forward Naji Marshall has been the subject of some trade speculation in recent weeks, but he doesn’t want to go anywhere. Marshall tells Ron Harrod Jr. of DLLS Sports (subscription required) that he’d like to spend the rest of his career playing alongside rising star Cooper Flagg, adding that he expects Flagg to “create history.”

This trade makes a ton of sense for Toronto and none for the other teams.
Surely the Kings can get at least a first and a couple of seconds for Sabonis. Nobody’s going to give up more than a SRP to exchange another $17 million contract for Aldama’s trade value as an expiring contract in 2027-28. Two SRPs now is worth more than one they can’t trade for until after NEXT season. In other words, the Kings would only consider this trade if that Toronto pick goes to them and not Memphis.
As for Memphis, it would take more than a late first round pick for any team to take on the rest of Poeltl’s contract.

First, Draymond is not a team cancer. (Do you know what team cancer means, child?) His teammates widely love him, other than Jordan Poole, who is nearly universally disliked by HIS teammates. Draymond has helped many other players develop, which is what we say when one player helps other players get better.
Second, Draymond has an expiring contract. Since you’re a child, I don’t expect you to understand the NBA salary cap. But, while I get that this is surprising, sometimes it helps NBA teams get better by taking on a player who won’t be on their team next year. When you are older, you will understand this better, kiddo.
Third, you may not realize this, but rumors about sports trades often don’t include all the information about a possible trade. In the NBA, you can have trades involving more than two teams. So there could be another team involved in a GSW-MIL trade, and one of those teams might not be a rebuilding team.
Fourth, it’s NOT obvious Green will pick up his option. Even older players opt out all the time. He he can probably get a two year deal for the same or more money, and he might like that job security. That’s a concept you will eventually understand when you have a job.
Fifth, Milwaukee would get other things in this trade: draft picks, which help get good young players, and a good young player who has not been used well by his current team, and probably another good young player on top of that.

Poeltl would’ve been nice for the bulls, but that window was about 4 or 5 years ago. Before they ransomed everything for Vucevic..who is now officially on the Celtics. Anyways, Poeltl is not worth a 1st rd pick imo. He’s too injury prone, and as flawed as Vucevic is..he’s still more durable and puts up better numbers as of right now. So no to Poeltl. Not if it’s going to cost a 1rp. That’s an overpay and it could be used elsewhere for a better option

It’s 3 FRPs, 2 swaps, Draymond, Kuminga and probably Podz. They may not be offering Podz yet, but that’s probably what it will take to get the deal done, and I think that deal makes a ton of sense for Milwaukee.

So essentially 4 FRPs and another early first in Hendricks for a couple years ago. The salary filler guys are on expiring contracts too. If GSW was giving the 3 FRPs, JK (I like Hendricks better), Podz (I take him over Clayton), and filler then possibly. However, I doubt they would’ve gone that far.

Personally I hate the fit with Rudy and Giannis. Giannis historically needs a 5 that can space the floor to give him room to operate by the cup. Maybe Ant has enough gravity to overcome that, but if I’m Minny I’d prioritize keeping Naz in any set of moves that lands you Giannis.
