In an interesting interview with Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard, Warriors owner Joe Lacob discussed a number of topics, including Jonathan Kuminga, Kristaps Porzingis, his expectations for the rest of the season, the future of head coach Steve Kerr, Draymond Green, tanking, and more.
As Kawakami writes, Lacob was one of Kuminga’s biggest supporters in Golden State, but he said the decision to trade the former lottery pick (and Buddy Hield) to Atlanta for Porzingis wasn’t a difficult one.
“Not hard; everyone assumes a lot about that,” Lacob said. “Look, I liked him as a player, I like him as a person. … And at times, he showed a lot of potential for us. Just never quite really worked entirely. And he got injured at inopportune times.
“I think we all knew we had to do something. But we weren’t going to give him away, either. Because he is a talent, and a lot of people think that, too. It just worked out — we got something that we thought was worth doing. Otherwise, we would’ve kept him.”
Of course, Kuminga demanded a trade on January 15 following a prolonged contract standoff with the team in the offseason, so the two sides weren’t exactly on great terms prior to parting ways. Lacob expressed skepticism that the Warriors could have received more value in return for the 23-year-old forward if they had moved him a year or two ago.
“I don’t think so,” Lacob said. “People say I loved him as a player, I was protecting him, I was whatever. That’s just not true. I did like him. I like all our players. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be acquiring them if we didn’t all like them. But you know, it just didn’t work. It looked like it was going to work. It was off and on a lot.”
Here are a few more highlights from Kawakami’s conversation with Lacob, which is worth checking out in full for Warriors fans.
On being encouraged by Porzingis’ Warriors debut on Thursday:
“He showed you a little bit about what he can do and why we got him. He’s always been one of my favorite players, to be honest, just in terms of his skill set, his size. You know, [general manger] Mike Dunleavy [Jr.] and the guys always laugh because I’m always yelling for more size. And we finally got it. He’s 7-foot-3, so I’m happy with that. We’ve got two real seven-footers on the team now [along with Quinten Post]. I like what I saw. Let’s get him ready, get him back to playing, get his timing back, and get used to our players. I think it’s encouraging.”
On whether there’s any clarity about Kerr’s future (his contract expires this offseason):
“I think Steve has answered that question; there’s nothing more I can say. He has said we’re going to wait until after the season. That’s 100% accurate. We’ve discussed it. No point in talking about it now. He’s got a job to do. Let’s just let people focus — I mean, why would you do that now? Let’s just focus on the season. Really, it’s up to him. What does he want to do? And he doesn’t know, I don’t think. So we’ll have that discussion later.”
On what Lacob thinks of Kerr’s job performance in 2025/26:
“I don’t look at it in one season. I look at it — he’s been our coach for 12 years. I think you can make the assumption that I think a lot of Steve Kerr. He’s a great coach. He’s been very successful. He’s won us four championships. Been to six Finals. He is a great human being, I really really, really respect him, admire him. But it depends what he wants to do and how he feels at the end of the season, and where we’re at. We’ll take all of it, put it into a bowl and figure it out. And I’m not really very worried about it, and I don’t think he’s very worried about it, either.“

For the love of god can we please stop talking about Jonathan Kuminga
LOL yes please for Pete’s sakes…
Yep, this Kuminga gift is still giving. Turn the page.
Warriors don’t seem to place much of a premium on health/availability. We can see where that’s gotten them. KP will not play many games for whoever he signs with after the season. Hope it is not the Warriors.
Got someone better in mind?
Vucevic won’t miss games. Also you sign him cheaper.
Vucevic doesn’t play defense.
Better than KP …..
It all depends on the price. I think Norm Powell would be a great fit on the dubs veteran squad. I keep saying it. Melton is gonna get paid somewhere else, but he is obviously the type of player they will need to compete. Tobias Harris will be a FA. I also like Javonte Green in Detroit. The Warriors used to find these type of players: Bazemore, Jamychal Green, Otto Porter, David West. I feel like they tried with Kyle Anderson but were less than impressed. Ya gotta shoot the three to play with the Warriors I guess.
None of the players I mention are “better” than KP on a per minutes basis, but taking into account their health and availability they were contributors to the team in a way that I don’t think KP will ever be.
Yeah Vucevic coulda fit in, but he’s a Celtic now.
Vucevic doesn’t play defense. Why can’t the re-sign Melton? Butler doesn’t shoot the 3 and he fits right in.
How much cap space do they have after Curry, Butler, Green, Moody, Podz and Horford?
They can resign Melton, but they may not want to if he gets the $9-12M he is likely to see at age 28. He has a player option that is less than he’s gonna get on the open market for what may be his last chance to make some money on a three year deal.
Agree on Butler, but they want him to shoot it more. Same really for Green. I don’t think they are targeting guys that don’t shoot the three. Jimmy is special.

They are already operating over the cap right now. Plus, it goes up next season. KP’s next contract will probably be at least half of what it is right now. They’ll have room.
But can they sign both Melton and KP? I’d rather have Melton. KP is going to be just like any other FA, no discount to the Warriors, so I’d prefer someone that is actually going to be healthy and play games for them. I don’t think he’s the answer.
KP is not getting the $30 million he made this season. Melton took a 75% pay cut. Donte took a 60% pay cut.
Donte was paid almost exactly what he got from MIL the year before and Melton took the cut so he could get playing time on a team that would show his value to the rest of the league. Donte resigned on a one year for the same reason. It worked with Donte, who then got the muliyear deal that Melton is about to get.
I don’t think anyone is giving the Warriors a discount, unless they are trying to show their value, and think the Warriors are a good way to do that. Melton has shown he’s healthy and a valuable asset and he out.
Why would KP give the Warriors any kind of deal? Somebody will probably pay him more than $20M per. I hope it is not the Warriors. If he can’t get more somewhere else, then yeah maybe a one year deal for $17M or something. I just think there is a GM dumber than ours who will give him a multiyear deal that Dubs won’t match.
Donte could have made more without the injury. Melton could have made more without the injury. KP will have to sign a make good contract. Nobody is giving him $30 million.
I guess what I’m saying is I don’t think they should hitch their wagon to KP because he is always always always injured and he will cost more than I think the Warriors should pay for him. If he wants the one year deal with Dubs for a discount, sure, but I doubt it. He’s at the point where if someone offers a multi-year deal he out. Do you think he’s worth $20M for next season? Or $33M for two? I don’t think that’s where they should be putting their money.
It’s like they are trying to line up all of the planets. If Steph, Jimmy, Draymond and now KP all are healthy come next seasons playoffs they have a chance, but it seems unlikely that all those guys are healthy going into the playoffs.
Vucevic has a brighter future in Boston. If the money is the same, wtf would he go play for the Warriors?
KP can’t be depended on. Vuc is 34 so comes cheaper. Yeah Celtics probably want to keep him. He’s UFA so Warriors can sign him. Celtics imo not paying him more than 15 mill. Probably less. Warriors can offer 3 yrs 45 mill TO on yr3.
Lots of standard blather you’d expect to hear.
The only thing I thought was remotely interesting was when he said about Kerr, “he’s got a job to do”.
Does he mean leading the team to missing the playoffs?
That’s why I don’t listen to sports talk or sports podcast. Same boring crap over and over.
It sounds a lot like when he was talking about Myers
> Does he mean leading the team to missing the playoffs?
No, he means making Steph happy so he’ll sign one more contract.
Lacob was the one that picked Kuminga so he is lying that he didn’t protect him. He wanted him to work out and claim he had a vision. The talk about Kerr means they are going to pretend he retires not admitting he is gone at the end of the year.
Without Lacob, Warriors definitely do not win 4 titles. Guve him some grace.
Just stating facts that lacob was the reason Kuminga saga went on for so long.

And? Is there a point?
Lets talk about how can Kerr run a PF/C combo of Moody/Green after their -28 ever again? He will though. Insanity. Too small. Why can’t people see this is what I have been yelling at all season? Love Moody next to Steph as the SG, but he is worthless as a forward, so why does Kerr keep doing that? Pat/Melton is -1000000 defense too, the smallest backcourt in the league.
Its so unbelievably frustrating that teams aren’t beating the best version of the Warriors, they are waiting for Kerr to go too-small (and he did that with the starters in the previous game vs Boston), and then just out-size them to get unlimited points at the rim. Kerr is not playing his tall players and going with undersized guards to horrible results over and over…its not his ONLY move! He can go big!! I have said this dozens of times on here. Why is a fan like me giving everyone the sauce on how to beat Kerr? I should have no clue to beat the Warriors or any team, but Kerr literally telegraphs his 1 move, and the other team counters by simply playing a normal basketball rotation with all 5 guys in their normal positions.
GSW: STOP PLAYING MOODY AT FORWARD, HE IS NOT A FORWARD AND IT ALSO MESSES WITH HIS DEVELOPMENT!!!! I’m so furious at Kerr and the coward Lacob who refuses to fire him and give the team a new much-needed direction that focuses on WINNING and not “how many undersized players can I play at once, that also play zero defense”!!! WHY IS KERR LIKE THIS? WHY IS HE DOING THIS??? MAKE KERR EXPLAIN IT!!!!! IT MAKES NO SENSE!!!!
just watching kerr’s face on teh sidelines you know he is retiring. He sees the end is near.
