Billy Donovan is seriously giving thought to leaving the Bulls at the conclusion of the season, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reports.
Siegel hears that Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd was North Carolina’s top choice to become its head coach. However, Lloyd agreed to a five-year deal to stay at Arizona, which makes Donovan the Tar Heels’ clear choice for the job.
Donovan is committed to the Bulls through the remainder of the season and won’t make any decisions on his future until April 12, Siegel adds. However, there is a growing belief around the league that Donovan will leave the franchise.
Here’s more on the Bulls:
- Mac McClung has done it again. The three-time NBA dunk contest champion has been named NBA G League MVP for the second time, the NBA announced (via Twitter). McClung, who is on a two-way contract, has been playing for the Windy City Bulls. The 27-year-old guard put up huge numbers in the regular season, averaging a G League-best 31.8 points, 7.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 steals on .515/.381/.781 shooting in 29 games (37.3 minutes per contest). Rockets two-way guard Tristen Newton and Kings swingman DaQuan Jeffries finished second and third in voting, respectively.
- Josh Giddey (hamstring) and Tre Jones (ankle) have been upgraded to probable for tonight’s game against the Knicks, K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network tweets. McClung is also probable with abdominal tightness.
- Brian Sandalow of the Chicago Sun Times details how the team has tried to move on from the Jaden Ivey saga. Ivey was waived earlier in the week following several controversial live streams on social media, among other factors.

He would be doing the Bulls a favor leaving.
Absolutely. Don’t let the door hit you, and thanks for saving us some cash!
Hey at least we have the king of the G League.
Maybe a new coach would give him a legit shot!
7- Suns 42–35
8- Blazers 40–38
9- Clippers 39–38
With 4gms to go Blazers can play Suns for 7th seed. If they lose. Then they will play winner of Clippers vs Warriors gm for 8th seed. 4 gms lols.
Please! Please! Leave, Billy!
Nobody would like to see Donovan leave more than me but let’s get real. He gets an extension for losing. What safer coaching job is there in sports today? If he did take the job at NC they would expect him to win. And they’d probably be disappointed like we are.
The other coach UNC was looking at. Turned them down I read. Hopefully Billy is mulling the UNC job over. It’s a good opportunity for him and his family. UNC needs a good coach. He turns them around. He becomes the biggest thing in college lol.
It’s not like North Carolina had a bad season…
they lost all 5 starters from the previous season and still went 25-9 and got the 6 seed in the tournament, which was better than they did the previous year.
But North Carolina is used to being as good as Duke in that conference. What I don’t get is why they think Donovan would be able to get them there.
UNC is used to being a top team in basketball. They will always try and be that. Donovan had an excellent run in college. At UNC he will have more support and access to top players. Than ever before. Imo he is a better college coach than pro.
Donovan has nothing to do with the Bulls lack of success. That starts with ownership and the front office. They are content with mediocre talent and just being a play in team. Doesn’t matter who the coach is.
The coach has everything to do with the team. It’s his system they draft for. His system they sign FAs for. The coach is the authority on the players . The GM is suppose to support him. And help him find talent. Owner just signs the checks. Billy is not a winner on pro level. And is clueless on building a team. As his record shows in Chicago. Go back to college.
Agreed. Donovan is a good coach. No coach can do much better than Donovan has with rosters that he has had to coach. IMO Donovan has coached up the rosters.
When AK first was hired, he quickly assembled a nucleus of DeRozan, LaVine, Vucevic and Lonzo Ball. Sadly, Ball hurt his knee in Jan of 2022 and was never the same. So, AK’s plan suffered a major setback. It has taken until now (the end of this season) to rid the Bulls of the effects of DeRozan and LaVine’s contracts. After this season, the Bulls will the most open cap space of all thirty teams.
My question is this, who would make a good next head coach of Chicago?
Northbrook’s own Jon Scheyer. Young team-Young Coach.
No. He literally shouldn’t be mentioned for replacement. I rather go get a coach who develops his guys rather than turn them into 3PT shooters when they have uber athleticism and agility around the rim to finish.
Or the heat’s assistant coach Snyder. He knows how to coach
Quinn Snyder?
The bulls need a coach that can teach them how to win consistently. Not another mediocre mindset
Thibs is available 👍😜
