The Knicks struggled to put four straight quarters of high-level offense together in Games 2 and 3 of their series against the Hawks. In Game 4, they turned to Karl-Anthony Towns as the lead man, and it may have saved their season, Kristian Winfield writes for the New York Daily News. The Knicks have had issues getting the talented center involved at times, but they made a clear effort to do so on Saturday.
The six-time All-Star had his first playoff triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. His passing from the top of the key opened up the game for the Knicks, as did the off-ball play designs from head coach Mike Brown, which got players like OG Anunoby shot after shot inside, most of which were courtesy of Towns.
“[Towns] is a special talent. He can do it all. And I know if I get open, he’ll find me,” Anunoby said after the game, per Winfield. “No matter how tight the window is, he’ll be able to find it. It’s amazing playing with a player like him.”
Brown said that the decision to play through Towns was a result of being willing to adjust quickly, given the magnitude of the game, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.
“We just switched our early offense,” Brown said. “So with us switching our early offense up the way we did, the ball went to his hands quite a bit.”
We have more from the Knicks:
- Josh Hart is best known for his rebounding and hustle plays, but it’s his defensive versatility that has allowed New York to come back and tie their first-round series with the Hawks, Jared Schwartz writes for the New York Post. Hart split his time guarding CJ McCollum, who has been picking apart the Knicks’ defense for much of the series, and Jalen Johnson. He was similarly effective on both players, and his intensity helped set the tone for New York’s perimeter defense, which held the Hawks to 24.4% shooting from deep and converted 19 Atlanta turnovers into 21 points. “Josh was really good on the ball,” Brown said. “Josh is a guy with quick feet, he’s strong and when he gets locked in, he’s locked in. His defensive activity, especially when he [pressures the ball], was fabulous [Saturday night]. Really, really good. And we needed all of it.”
- Another crucial part of the Knicks’ victory was finding a way to keep Jalen Brunson from being a target on defense. On Saturday, Brown was able to do that, Winfield writes. “We mix it up so Jalen is not always on [the ball-handler],” Brown said pregame. “When he is, we got to make sure we continue to mix up our defensive coverages.” Brunson also waved away concerns over the visible disagreement he had with his father, assistant coach Rick Brunson, simply saying, “That was two competitors,” per Schwartz.
- It’s been an inconsistent start to the playoffs for Miles McBride, who is still less than three months removed from undergoing sports hernia surgery. McBride has had some positive moments, especially late in games, but has made just one two-pointer and has yet to attempt a free throw. He’s not making excuses about his injury though, Bondy writes. “I expect a lot out of myself, more than anybody else, honestly. And I try not to listen to how I’m feeling day to day,” he said. “Because at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter; if I’m supposed to get a stop, I gotta get a stop. If I’m supposed to make a shot, I gotta make a shot. So I try not to think about it. Reality is, I’ve gotta go out there and perform.”

Hawks don’t have the bigs to defend Towns. So he will create double teams and breakdowns in their defense. About time they figured it out. Just keep doing it. Jalen is due for a big game. Hawks have been defended him well so far. Bridges please wake up man.
Jock Landale is their only real C. Yikes
I thought two more deals at the deadline would have been good ( C and PG 24-26 years old) ( Morant and Claxton)
As a Hawks fan, this is anyone’s series. I always knew if the Knicks played through Towns on offense more, it would be tough to defend. Brunson ball is very predictable and the Knicks got rid of that for Game 4 and it made the offense more unpredictable. Still was predictable enough in my opinion because the Hawks were sleeping on defense. They didn’t show up to win in Game 4. They aren’t a team to do that 2 games in a row. The Hawks need to attack Brunson again and try to get those switches. Jalen Johnson specifically needs to lock in because if he was playing his typical basketball, the Hawks would be up in the series right now. He needs to lead and finish the series out. If not, the Knicks will likely win the series. Atlanta really needs Jock Landale back. Could easily see this series going to 7.
The Hawks need to play smarter – there’s no reason for Dyson to be chucking long threes given he’s at 14% from three in the series. Only 3 Hawks should be shooting threes, NAW, Vincent, and Okongwu.
Giving Bradley more minutes could help.
CJ McCollum has been good from 3, just not in Game 4. I think Jalen Johnson and Jonathan Kuminga should take open threes but on low volume. Kuminga taking 6 and missing all of them last game was unacceptable.
CJ’s at 33% in the series, he wasn’t good in gm 2 either. maybe he’s due in game 5.
I think the Knicks will be helped by the extra rest and win a close game 5.
You have to remember some Hawks are still new to playoffs. There is a reason why one is the 3rd seed.
I agree that Brunson iso is predictable. So easier to defend. Just simple math lol. Hawks have trouble with good bigs. So if Knicks go thru Towns. Get him going. It will open up the offense for everyone.
Knicks strength is playing as a team both ways. Imo they just have to commit to that tor 48 mins. You are not holding down JB for whole series. Brunson and Bridges are due. Knicks defense won gm4. Have to keep that up.
Yeah in a game it’s not up to one team. I get you’re a fan. There is a reason why Knicks were favored in this series. Why they are the third seed. And we have ALL seen this in gms 4-5. All the good teams in East have size. Towns was always going to be a problem for Hawks. Knicks finally woke up to that.
You did get it right lol. Series will be over in SIX.
Hawks have a bright future. Just don’t blow those picks this yr.
Defensive intensity won the game. They need to sustain that intensity and not let up. Rotate. Don’t play the bigs together – separate them out. Get Robinson active early. Crash the offensive boards. Knicks were their most dangerous when they had Robinson, IH and Hart beating the offensive glass. Now that KAT is picking up on it by trailing plays he’s getting easy points.
In the end they just need to stay focused for 48 minutes. That includes Brown.
You said it bro. Do it tor 48 mins. That intensity and commitment. I just don’t get why we can’t get this every gm. This is the playoffs man. Knicks play as a team 10 deep. They beat Hawks. Infuriating lol.
I just hope that have learned this lesson now.
NYK will get by ATL, if they can stay awake. But, either way, Brown’s demolition of the team’s prior identity (one of physicality, grit and focus) to create its current one (one of finesse and selective effort) will survive this series. This NYK team won’t win much under its current identity, and, since it would be hard to change at this point, I don’t see them going much further in the playoffs. Things being a part of a team’s game plan will never be a substitute for them being part of a team’s identity. Not over the course of a entire playoff season.
Have some faith bro. I get what you say. They do deserve the criticism. Yet they have also played well against top teams. So I see it as they are Capable. Hopefully the Hawks taught them that.
The East have all looked vulnerable. Pistons might not survive. The top seed. Cavs have looked normal. Against a team we dominated. Even the Celtics we beat this yr. I don’t look ahead. Only to next gm. Winning this series I believe gets us ready for Celtics. We stay playing like this. We can compete with anyone.
To start playoffs. I was more worried about Cavs n Pistons. Now I think Celtics will be the toughest series.
Lets do this.
The Knicks beat the Celtics at home in the 2nd game of the season in October, and not only were the Celtics without Tatum, but they played Simons, Gonzales, Boucher, and Tillman double digit minutes.
Then they blew them out in Boston (still no Tatum) in the worst shooting game for the Celtics of the season.
So there’s hope, I suppose – Tatum isn’t 100%, and the Celtics need their threes to fall or they can be beat.
Knicks and Celtics know each other well. Their time is coming.
I got some. LOL. A lot for the ATL series. I’m not looking ahead either. But I do look behind, at least back to the past preseason and regular season. When I do, I can’t help but think the NYK have wasted their best chance to be a championship team since the 1990’s by not building on last year, but running away from it. But, you’re right, let’s send ATL home and move forward. Honestly, there is no single oppoinent I don’t think we can beat. It’s difficult, though, to win 4 drama filled playoff series.
Yes exactly those drama gms. Look I know Knicks can stink it up. Worse they seem not committed to making sure they win, at times. Just go thru motions. And worse when teams take out Brunson. They tend to fall apart a bit. I have always said they aren’t good enough unless they play as a team. They stay committed to playing as a team. Imo we ca go far. East is there for who wants it most lol.
Love to see KAT shine. Wish the wolves didn’t get crushed by the new CBA.
The Knicks will ultimately be out coached, ending Brown’s run in NY. The Hawks have an “it” factor, stubborn and nagging, that will ultimately wear down whatever momentum the Knicks have coming out of game 4. I expect NAW and JJ to arrive in game 5, usurping CJ’s villain status run. The Hawks will quite literally annoy the Knicks out of the playoffs. This is the way.
The Knicks lost a game to the Hawks by choking at the ft line and allowing CJ to go off.
That won’t happen again.
Uhh, it might.
I just bet a decent amount of money the Knicks will win this series. Despite Brown.
They have more talent and experience than Atlanta and they unlocked something down there that I don’t think Atlanta has an answer to.
Mostly KAT.
Now the way the Celtics looked last night? Tatum Pritchard and all. And the way this team defends the three?
That’s a concern. But Mitch will be a much greater factor in that series and if wiser heads prevail so will Sochan.
He’s tailor made to shut down a guy like Tatum when he gets hot. And Alvarado is perfect to pester Pritchard.
This aged well 🤫
Not rocket science, I have been saying it since KAT came to NYK, he is the man not Brunson!
Consistently he’s better in a team that doesn’t play for him, if they did he would be unstoppable, so would be the team!
Man, I don’t care about all of the jibber jabber, just win the series and go from there. Great series so far, let’s go Knicks.
This site is all about the jibber jabber though
Steve Kerr just said the NBA might be better off eliminating the three point line.
I agree.
That would put coaches like Brown out of a job tho. Forever.
Hammer Time —— Hawks don’t have a real PG or a true big. Defense has to be in full effect. Keep the pressure on their ball-handlers. And feed Towns run the offense thru him.
Gm3– Hawks 34/83 FG, 10/41 3pt, 18 TO
Nobody for Hawks scored 20 .
Brunson 19 pts, Bridges 8 pts. MSG home sweet home
HAMMER TIME —- in SI⚒️
