Aric Holman

And-Ones: Holman, Crawford, Messina, Terry, Tanking Standouts

Free agents Aric Holman and Jordan Crawford have signed in Puerto Rico with Gigantes de Carolina, the club announced on social media (Facebook links). The duo joins a team that already features former NBA players Tremont Waters and Thomas Robinson.

Holman, a 6’9″ big man, played 38 games with the Spurs’ G League affiliate this season. He averaged 11.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in 24.5 minutes per game, shooting 38% from the floor. He also signed a 10-day contract with the Heat back in December.

Crawford, a 6’5″ guard, has played 281 NBA games with five teams. He spent time with the Nets’ G League affiliate this season, averaging 14.4 points on 37% shooting from the floor. He was also the No. 27 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

Here are some other odds and ends from around the basketball world:

  • Ettore Messina has agreed to a two-year contract extension with Olimpia Milano in Italy, according to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (hat tip Sportando). Messina, the head coach of Milano, spent five years coaching under Gregg Popovich with the Spurs from 2014-19. He was named the EuroLeague Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008.
  • Free agent big man Emanuel Terry has agreed to a deal in France with Orleans Loiret Basket, the team announced on social media (Twitter link). Terry spent this season in the G League with Sacramento’s affiliate, averaging 13.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
  • John Hollinger of The Athletic examines some of the players from the NBA’s “tanking” teams who have looked good down the stretch, including Wizards big man Kristaps Porzingis, Rockets guard Jalen Green and Knicks forward Obi Toppin.

Heat Officially Sign Kyle Guy, Aric Holman

The Heat have officially signed Kyle Guy and Aric Holman to 10-day deals using hardship exceptions, the team announced today in a press release. Both agreements were initially reported on Wednesday.

The 55th overall pick in the 2019 draft, Guy spent his first two NBA seasons on a two-way contract with Sacramento, but played a very limited role with the Kings, appearing in 34 games and averaging 2.7 PPG and 1.0 APG in 7.2 minutes per contest.

Guy has seen more action at the G League level, appearing in 37 games with the Stockton Kings as a rookie and 12 more games this season with the Cleveland Charge, the Cavaliers’ G League affiliate. The 24-year-old has averaged 21.1 PPG, 4.6 APG, and 4.3 RPG on .421/.392/.758 shooting in 35.7 MPG over the course of his NBAGL career.

Holman, who went undrafted out of Mississippi State in 2019, played in Germany last season but has otherwise been in the G League since going pro. In 14 games (20.4 MPG) for Austin this season, the 24-year-old averaged 7.5 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 2.0 APG, and 1.5 BPG on .463/.326/.250 shooting (that free-throw mark came on just four attempts).

In addition to adding Guy and Holman, Miami is expected to sign Haywood Highsmith to a 10-day contract soon. With 12 players unavailable on Wednesday, the Heat had their game in San Antonio postponed because they didn’t have the required minimum of eight players.

Guy, Holman, and Highsmith should get the Heat up to that minimum for Friday’s game in Houston, but the club is eligible to continue adding replacement players if it so chooses.

Heat To Sign Aric Holman To 10-Day Contract

The Heat will sign big man Aric Holman to a 10-day contract using a hardship exception, sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link).

As Wojnarowski details, Holman had been playing for the Austin Spurs in the G League, which means he’s within driving distance of San Antonio. The plan is for him to head there immediately to join the Heat in advance of Wednesday’s game vs. the Spurs to help avoid a postponement.

Three more Heat players entered the health and safety protocols today, bringing the team’s total to six. With four players also injured, the team is at risk of not having the required minimum of eight players for tonight’s contest. Holman and Kyle Guy, who has also agreed to a 10-day deal, should help Miami get there.

Spurs Release Nate Renfro, Aric Holman

The Spurs waived a pair of recent roster additions over the weekend, cutting guard Nate Renfro and big man Aric Holman, according to NBA.com’s transactions log.

Neither move comes as a surprise. San Antonio signed both players to non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contracts with an eye toward having them eventually join the Austin Spurs in the G League. The Exhibit 10 deals will ensure that both players receive bonuses worth up to $50K if they spend at least 60 days with Austin.

Renfro, who went undrafted in 2019 out of San Francisco, spent the 2019/20 season recovering from a torn ACL, then played for the Austin Spurs – San Antonio’s G League affiliate – during the 2021 NBAGL bubble season.

Holman, who also went undrafted in 2019, played for the Texas Legends as a rookie and for Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany during his second professional season. The former Mississippi State standout suited up for Boston during the 2021 Las Vegas Summer League.

Following their cuts, the Spurs have 18 players under contract, including 17 on guaranteed standard contracts. They’ll have to trade or waive at least two of those players before the start of the regular season, and may continue shuffling players through their last two roster spots for G League purposes.

Spurs Sign Aric Holman, Officially Add Nate Renfro

The Spurs have signed forward/center Aric Holman, according to the RealGM transactions log. Terms were not reported but it’s safe to assume Holman received a non-guaranteed camp deal.

Holman went undrafted in 2019 out of Mississippi State. He signed with the Lakers that summer and was soon waived. The Mavericks claimed him but also waived him during training camp.

He played in the G League for the Texas Legends that season before signing with a team in Germany last year. He was on the Celtics’ summer league roster. He averaged 5.0 PPG and 1.8 RPG in 8.5 MPG during a handful of contests in Las Vegas.

San Antonio also officially added guard Nate Renfro, according to the transactions feed. That pending signing was reported on Friday.

The additions bump the Spurs’ training camp roster to the 20-man limit. It’s likely both players will soon wind up with the G League’s Austin Spurs.

Mavericks Waive Aric Holman, Dakota Mathias

The Mavericks have waived Aric Holman and Dakota Mathias, the team announced today in a press release. The team’s training camp roster now sits at 17 players, as Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News tweets.

Mathias was not selected in the 2019 NBA Draft after spending four seasons at Purdue. The shooting guard is a candidate for the team’s G League affiliate, the Texas Legends.

The Mavericks claimed Holman off waivers earlier this offseason from the Lakers, though the big man was never expected to make the regular season roster. Like Mathias, Holman could also find his way onto the Legends.

Mavericks Claim Aric Holman Off Waivers

The Mavericks have claimed rookie forward Aric Holman off waivers, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). Holman was released earlier this week when the Lakers needed to create a spot on their 20-man roster for Dwight Howard.

Holman, 22, went undrafted out of Mississippi State this spring after averaging 9.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG and 1.6 BPG with a .473/.429/.701 shooting line in his senior year. He quickly caught on with the Lakers, joining the team for Summer League and later signing an Exhibit 10 contract.

Holman averaged 4.5 PPG and 3.8 RPG in 15.8 MPG in four appearances with the Lakers in Las Vegas in July, but was the odd man out when Howard came aboard. The club chose to keep camp invitees Devontae Cacok, Jordan Caroline, and Demetrius Jackson over Holman.

The Mavericks had 18 players under contract before claiming Holman, giving them flexibility to give the undrafted rookie a look. Barring another transaction, the youngster figures to attend training camp with Dallas this fall. Since the team already has 15 players on guaranteed contracts, he’s a long shot to make the Mavs’ regular season roster.

Lakers Waive Forward Aric Holman

The Lakers are waiving forward Aric Holman to open up a roster spot for Dwight Howard, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports tweets.

The Lakers had a full 20-man training camp roster prior to the addition of Howard and needed to make a corresponding move.

Holman was signed to an  Exhibit 10 deal last month. He went undrafted and spent his college days at Mississippi State. The power forward blocked at least two shots in 61 of his 124 collegiate games. He averaged 9.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG and 1.6 BPG with a .473/.429/.701 shooting line in his senior year.

He averaged 4.5 PPG and 3.8 RPG in 15.8 MPG in four appearances with the Lakers in the Las Vegas summer league.

Jordan Caroline Signs Exhibit 10 Deal With Lakers

JULY 20: One month later, the Lakers and Caroline have made it official, per a release from the club.

JUNE 20: The Lakers have reached a deal with undrafted Nevada wing Jordan Caroline, according to Harrison Faigen of Silver Screen and Roll, who reports that Caroline will sign an Exhibit 10 contract with the club.

Caroline, who began his college career at Southern Illinois before transferring to Nevada, averaged 17.0 PPG, 9.6 RPG, and 1.9 APG in his senior year. He also showed off an improved three-point shot, converting 1.4 per game at a rate of 36.8%.

Caroline is the third undrafted free agent to have reached a deal with the Lakers since the draft, joining Zach Norvell Jr. (two-way) and Devontae Cacok (Exhibit 10), as we detailed earlier today.

Mississippi State forward Aric Holman may be joining that group, as Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reports (via Twitter) that Holman has also agreed to join the Lakers. However, it’s not yet clear whether that deal will just cover the Summer League or whether Holman will get a spot on the team’s 20-man offseason roster.

Holman averaged 9.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 1.6 BPG with a .473/.429/.701 shooting line in his senior year at Mississippi State.

Lakers Sign Devontae Cacok, Aric Holman

The Lakers have signed rookie free agents Devontae Cacok and Aric Holman, according to a team press release. Both contracts are Exhibit 10 deals, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

Cacok went undrafted out of UNC Wilmington. Back in the 2016/17 season, the big man shot an NCAA-record 80.0% from the field. He posted a double-double (15.2 PPG, 12.3 RPG) in 33 games in 2018/19, his senior season.

Holman spent four years at Mississippi State and was also not drafted. The power forward blocked at least two shots in 61 of his 124 collegiate games, per the Lakers. He averaged 9.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 1.6 BPG with a .473/.429/.701 shooting line in his senior year.

Cacok’s agreement with the Lakers was first reported by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, while Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports broke word of Holman’s deal.
