Wizards Sign Jordan Goodwin Via Hardship Exception
DECEMBER 27: The Wizards have officially signed Goodwin to a 10-day contract, the team announced in a press release.
DECEMBER 26: The Wizards are planning to sign Jordan Goodwin from their G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, on a 10-day contract under the hardship exemption, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets.
Goodwin is averaging 15.9 PPG, 6.1 RPG and 3.6 APG in 14 games with the Go-Go, including 10 starts. He went undrafted earlier this year following a four-year college career with Saint Louis.
The 6’3” guard will fortify a backcourt that has two prominent players, Bradley Beal and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, in the league’s health and safety protocols.

The league continues to be ravaged by COVID positives with an increasing number of players entering the league’s health and safety protocols. Here are the latest updates:
- Warriors star forward Draymond Green has entered the protocols, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets. Green joined four other Warriors in the protocols heading into a pair of games against Denver.
- The Grizzlies’ Dillon Brooks, De’Anthony Melton and Yves Pons all entered the protocols prior to their game against Sacramento on Sunday, the team’s PR department tweets. Memphis now has five players under those restrictions.
- Darius Bazley became the first Thunder player in protocols, Andrew Schlecht of The Athletic tweets.
- Veteran Rockets guard D.J. Augustin has entered the health and safety protocols, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle tweets.
- Clippers two-way player Jay Scrubb has been placed in the protocols, Andrew Greif of the Los Angeles Times tweets.
- Wizards guard Raul Neto has joined two other Washington players in the protocols, Josh Robbins of The Athletic tweets.
- Two Hornets regulars, Miles Bridges and P.J. Washington, are now in the protocols, the team’s PR department tweets.
- On the positive side, Sixers forward Georges Niang has cleared the protocols, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets.
Pelicans Sign Justin James To 10-Day Contract

12:46pm: The Pelicans are signing swingman Justin James to a 10-day contract using the hardship exemption, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets.
New Orleans has three players — Nickeil Alexander-Walker , Jose Alvarado and Naji Marshall — in the league’s health and safety protocols.
James appeared in 72 games off the bench for Sacramento the past two seasons. averaging 3.2 PPG in 7.5 MPG. He has been playing for the Cavaliers’ G League affiliate, the Cleveland Charge. James was averaging 15.7 PPG and 2.3 APG in 29.0 MPG through 14 games for the Charge.
Deividas Sirvydis Signs With Pistons On Hardship Exemption
The Pistons, who have been hit hard by COVID-19 in recent days, are signing forward Deividas Sirvydis from their G League affiliate on a 10-day contract via the hardship exemption, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets. The signing has been confirmed by a team press release.
Sirvydis has appeared in 14 games (eight starts) this season at the G League level for the Motor City Cruise. He’s averaging 12.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG and 2.1 APG in 25.7 MPG.
The 21-year-old Sirvydis was drafted in the second round by Dallas in 2019 and his rights were forwarded to the Pistons. He appeared in 20 games with Detroit last season.
Detroit has eight players in league protocols and two other prominent players, Jerami Grant and Kelly Olynyk, sidelined with long-term injuries.
Isaiah Thomas Won’t Get Another 10-Day From Lakers
Isaiah Thomas will not receive another 10-day contract from the Lakers, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets. Thomas’ initial 10-day deal with the club expires tonight.
According to Charania, multiple teams are expected to express interest in Thomas, who averaged 9.3 PPG in four games for Lakers. That included a 19-point outing against Minnesota. Thomas was signed using the hardship exemption.
Thomas had been unable to secure an NBA opportunity through the season’s first two months. He signed a G League contract and joined the Grand Rapids Gold, Denver’s affiliate, where he delivered a 42-points, eight-assist game.
Prior to his Lakers’ stint, Thomas appeared in just 55 total NBA games since the start of the 2018/19 season for the Nuggets, Wizards, and Pelicans, averaging 11.1 PPG and 3.2 APG in 21.0 minutes. The 32-year-old was bothered for years by hip problems, but has said he’s fully healthy now and recently represented Team USA in a pair of qualifying games for the 2023 World Cup.

- The Pistons, who already had six players in protocols, added guards Cory Joseph and Josh Jackson to the list, James Edwards III of The Athletic tweets. The Pistons are scheduled to play the Spurs on Sunday night. San Antonio will be without Dejounte Murray, who also entered protocols on Sunday, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets.
- The Magic, who already had a handful of players in protocols, won’t have B.J. Johnson and Chuma Okeke available against Miami on Sunday after they joined the list, the team’s PR department tweets. Moritz Wagner has exited the protocols but is going through a reconditioning period before returning to action, per the team (Twitter link).
- Lakers point guard Rajon Rondo has entered protocols, joining three other Lakers, Kyle Goon of the Orange County Register tweets.
- Two-way player Jose Alvarado became the third Pelicans players to enter protocols, Andrew Lopez of ESPN tweets.
- Bulls guard Lonzo Ball has entered protocols, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets. The Bulls, who have experienced major COVID issues this month, also have Alfonzo McKinnie and Tony Bradley in protocols, Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic tweets. McKinnie just signed a standard contract and he can be replaced via the hardship exemption, Bobby Marks of ESPN tweets. Chicago has seen 14 players enter protocols this month.
- On the positive side, the Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey was spotted at shootaround after exiting protocols, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets.
COVID-19 Updates: Marshall, Cooper, Hampton, Towns, Brown
The Pelicans’ Naji Marshall has entered the league’s health and safety protocols, Christian Clark of the New Orleans Times-Picayune tweets. Earlier in the day, Nickeil Alexander-Walker became the first New Orleans player to enter protocols this season. Marshall, a second-year forward, has appeared in 19 games off the bench this season.

- Hawks rookie point guard Sharife Cooper has entered the health and safety protocols, Sarah Spencer of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets. Cooper joins six other Atlanta players currently on the list. The second-round pick has appeared in eight games off the bench this season.
- Magic guard R.J. Hampton exited the protocols on Thursday, Khobi Price of the Orlando Sentinel tweets. He didn’t play on Thursday in order to work on his conditioning. Hampton was placed in the protocols on December 17, which means he produced two negative tests at least 24 hours apart.
- Karl-Anthony Towns is asymptomatic, Timberwolves coach Chris Finch told Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic (Twitter link). “He is in the best spirits possible,” Finch said, adding Towns was very disappointed he couldn’t play on Thursday. Towns was placed in the protocols on Thursday, joining six other Minnesota players.
- Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown has entered the protocols, Anthony Slater of The Athletic tweets.
Western Notes: Murray, Ibaka, Warriors, Gordon, Wiseman
Nuggets coach Michael Malone has tempered expectations about Jamal Murray‘s return date, Mike Singer of the Denver Post tweets. Malone said on a radio interview with 92.5 FM Altitude Sports that fans shouldn’t expect to see Murray return from his knee injury in January or February. The organization is taking it very cautious with their franchise point guard.

- Clippers big man Serge Ibaka admits he’s frustrated with his playing time but he won’t become a distraction, according to Andrew Greif of the Los Angeles Times. “I’m going to be honest with you, as a human being it can be frustrating,” Ibaka said. “As a coach, [Tyronn Lue] tries to do his best he can to keep the team together, to keep the team playing the best basketball you can and as a player, like, hard worker, someone who loves basketball like me, I want to play, too. . . . but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop being professional.” With Isaiah Hartenstein out of action, Ibaka scored 17 points in 20 minutes off the bench against Sacramento on Wednesday. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
- Arctos Sports Partners is increasing its stake in the Warriors from 5% to 13%, Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams of Sportico report. The team is valued at about $5.5 billion in the deal, the same valuation as when Arctos bought its initial 5% earlier this year. A majority of this new equity is coming from minority partners, with a small portion from the team’s main owners, Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, the Sportico report adds. The deal must be approved by the NBA’s Board of Governors.
- The Rockets’ Eric Gordon, who has battled knee problems in recent years, is playing both ends of a back-to-back this week for the first time this season, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. “This was the plan long ago,” Gordon said. “I’ve been feeling pretty good all year. This was definitely the plan before the season started. But I will be looking forward to playing back-to-back.”
- Warriors big man James Wiseman could advance to on-court contact next week, Anthony Slater of The Athletic tweets. Wiseman has been rehabbing from offseason knee surgery.
CJ McCollum’s Lung Has Fully Healed
Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum has been cleared for non-contact drills after a CT scan on Wednesday showed that his right lung is fully healed, according to a team press release.
McCollum suffered a pneumothorax — a collapsed right lung — earlier this month.
McCollum has averaged 20.6 PPG and 4.5 APG on .424/.393/.700 shooting in 24 games (35.3 MPG) so far this season. The 30-year-old, who is in the first year of a three-year, $100MM contract, could be an in-season trade candidate.
McCollum also been cleared for increased conditioning and shooting and will be reevaluated next week, according to the release. That suggests he’s is probably still at least a couple of weeks away from returning to action for Portland, which is languishing with a 13-19 record.
Mavs Rookie Omoruyi Out 4-6 Months After Toe Surgery
Mavericks two-player Eugene Omoruyi recently underwent surgery on his right big toe and will require 4-6 months to return to basketball activities, the team’s PR department tweets. Head coach Jason Kidd said Omoruyi will likely miss the remainder of the season, Callie Caplan of the Dallas Morning News tweets.
Omoruyi suffered the injury in an NBA G League game with the Texas Legends on December 15.
Undrafted out of Oregon, the 24-year-old small forward has appeared in four games with Dallas this season. He has averaged 15.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG and 2.9 APG in eight G League games.
Omoruyi played his first three college seasons with Rutgers.
Dallas could look to add another two-way player to replace Omoruyi. Like many teams, the Mavericks have been hit hard by COVID-19 cases as of late.
