Atlantic Notes: Celtics, Nets, Hollins, Nelson
Celtics 2013 second round pick Colton Iverson is back from Turkey and confident that he’ll make the C’s roster, writes Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston.com. “I knew when I got drafted last year that there was a pretty good chance I would have to go overseas,” said Iverson. “I was here working, trying to impress, and do everything possible to help the team. I knew there was a slim chance just with the roster. I think this year there is a little bit better chance and I know the opportunity is all mine for the taking. I think if I just come out and show what I can do in summer league and the next couple days here, I will really help myself. - Everything is quiet on the Nets/Lionel Hollins front at the moment, but signs are pointing toward an agreement, tweets Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated. Brooklyn has no immediate plans to interview anyone else for the position.
- Nets GM Billy King told WFAN that Jameer Nelson is “on the list” of potential free agents that Brooklyn could target, tweets Andy Vasquez of the Bergen Record.
- Mark Jackson was rumored to be a possible coaching candidate for the Nets, but he’s not under serious consideration now, tweets Michael Scotto of Sheridan Hoops.
- New Warriors guard Shaun Livingston told David Aldridge of NBA.com (on Twitter) that his departure from the Nets was a “long time coming” and admitted that the team’s limitations in how much money they could offer was a factor. He went on to say that Jason Kidd‘s bizarre exit from Brooklyn wasn’t a major factor from him but also “didn’t help matters” (link).
- Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com runs down five potential free agent targets for the Knicks, including Pau Gasol, Jordan Hill, and Andrew Bynum.
Pacific Rumors: Hawes, Gasol, Frye, Warriors
Free agent Spencer Hawes met with Warriors GM Bob Myers in Los Angeles, tweets Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports. The Warriors have a trade exception that they could use in a sign-and-trade scenario for the big man. Next up for Hawes will be a meeting with Clippers‘ coach/president Doc Rivers. - A source tells Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio (on Twitter) that Hawes will meet with the Lakers while he’s in Los Angeles.
- Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak met with free agent forward Pau Gasol in person on Tuesday, a league source tells Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com (on Twitter). The meeting took place at an L.A. office building and lasted “a few hours” (link).
- The Warriors contacted the agent for free agent big man Channing Frye, according to Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle. The W’s have also gotten calls on young assets Harrison Barnes, Draymond Green, and Festus Ezeli, but haven’t jumped on any of the proposed deals.
- Despite early interest in Hawes and Frye, the Warriors are turning their concentration towards signing a backup point guard, a source tells David Aldridge of NBA.com (on Twitter).
Central Rumors: Melo, Bulls, Irving, Sessions
Carmelo Anthony says that he values winning over money and if he’s a man of his word, then the Bulls make perfect sense for him, writes Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. Here’s more on Melo and Chicago, plus other notes out of the Central Division..
- Melo met with the Bulls earlier today and a source tells Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders (on Twitter) that he followed that up with a dinner alongside Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose, and others. Rose had to leave the dinner early, but coach Tom Thibodeau also stopped by (link). The dinner pitch is going “great,” according to the source who is in attendance (link). Prior to dinner, Rose took to the floor at Chicago’s practice facility and went through a private workout to show Anthony that he’s healthy, Kennedy writes.
- The Cavs sealed the deal with Kyrie Irving on a five-year, $90MM extension with an overnight meeting, but there was much more that went into wooing the guard. Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer runs it all down.
- A bunch of teams are showing interest in Ramon Sessions, including the Bulls, tweets Gery Woelfel of the Journal Times.
- A league source tells Candace Buckner of The Star (on Twitter) that the Pacers plan to dine with C.J. Miles tonight.
Bucks Shopping O.J. Mayo
The Bucks are shopping O.J. Mayo, according to league sources that spoke with Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders (on Twitter).
It was reported back in May that the Bucks would be willing to trade Mayo, but it was unclear at the time if they were actively shopping him. Now, we know that the Bucks would prefer to exchange the 26-year-old for something else.
Mayo, the former No. 3 overall pick, saw just 52 games of action (23 starts) in his first season with the Bucks, averaging 11.7 PPG, 2.4 RPG, and 2.2 APG. While the injuries certainly weren’t Mayo’s fault, Milwaukee was obviously hoping for more out of the guard after inking him to a three-year, $24MM deal last summer.
Nuggets Have Mulled Trading McGee, Chandler
The Nuggets have considered trading JaVale McGee and/or Wilson Chandler, league sources tell Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders (via Twitter).
McGee, everyone’s favorite freakishly talented but sometimes absent-minded center, saw just five games of action this season. McGee fractured his left tibia in November and while Denver hoped to have him back on the floor at some point, a February surgery brought an end to his 2013/14 campaign. The big man averaged 9.1 PPG and 4.8 RPG in 2012/13 for Denver.
Chandler found himself mentioned on Hoops Rumors when things appeared to be getting hot and heavy on the Kevin Love front, but nothing came from those June talks. Today’s report from Kennedy would infer that Chandler can be had in deals that don’t involve the Wolves’ top talent.
Wizards Re-Sign Marcin Gortat
JULY 10TH: The deal is official, the Wizards announce.
JULY 1ST: The Wizards have agreed to sign big man Marcin Gortat to a new deal, according to teammate and enterprising journalist John Wall on Twitter. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter) says that it’s a five-year, $60MM pact. There are no options or early terminations in Gortat’s deal, tweets David Aldridge of NBA.com.
The mutual interest in a reunion between Gortat and the Wizards has been widely reported for months now, but there were still a number of suitors that threatened to get in the way. The Heat, for one, were said to be thinking about uniting Gortat with their Big Three this summer. The Cavs were also contemplating a run at the 30-year-old, but the Wizards managed to get on the phone with Gortat just after the clock struck midnight and apparently made quick progress on a deal.
Gortat, 30, averaged 13.2 PPG and 9.5 RPG last season for the Wizards while helping them reach the second round of the playoffs. The five-year, $60MM contract matches up with the deal that the Wolves gave to Nikola Pekovic roughly eleven months ago, though it’s not clear if Gortat has an incentives package like Pek’s ($8MM in total).
As Wall touched on his tweet, the Wizards will now turn their attention to re-signing teammate Trevor Ariza. Ariza has spoken fondly of his time in D.C. but is said to be seeking a deal in the $8-$11MM range and likes the idea of playing in a warm weather city.
Southwest Rumors: Daniels, LeBron, Parsons
The Rockets would like to re-sign Troy Daniels, but he’s also receiving interest from the Mavericks, Spurs, Grizzlies, and Pelicans, according to sources that spoke with RealGM’s Shams Charania. Daniels became a playoff hero for Houston after he was called up from the D-League but they could be seeing plenty of him on the opposing side this season with the entire Southwest Division in pursuit. - The Mavericks, Rockets, and Suns are among the teams that are set to meet with LeBron James‘ agent, Rich Paul, tweets Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe.
- Several teams are thinking of signing Chandler Parsons to a high-dollar offer sheet if only to burden the Rockets with an unwieldy cap hold while they decided whether to match, as Grantland’s Zach Lowe writes.
- The Grizzlies are split on what to do with free agent forward James Johnson, writes Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal. The coaching staff sees Johnson as a mistake-prone player and is frustrated by him. Meanwhile, some of the team’s execs see him as a wild card worth keeping.

Southeast Rumors: Lowry, McRoberts, Livingston
The Heat‘s infatuation with free agent guard Kyle Lowry has been well documented, but the Big Three haven’t been actively recruiting him, writes Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports. More from the Southeast Division..
- Josh McRoberts‘ agent tells Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer that there’s mutual interest between his client and the Hornets. “Quite a few teams have expressed” interest, Mike Conley Sr. said in a phone interview. “We haven’t gone into any in-depth discussions yet, but we know how the Hornets want him.”
- The Hornets approached Shaun Livingston about a possible return to Charlotte, a knowledgeable source tells Bonnell. Livingston played for Charlotte in the 2010-11 season when they were under their maiden Bobcats moniker.
- Kent Bazemore has heard from the Hawks, Celtics, Mavs, Lakers, Suns, and Bulls, tweets Jeff Caplan of NBA.com. Michael Scotto of Sheridan Hoops (Twitter link) adds the Spurs to that list.
Hornets Hire Chad Buchanan As Assistant GM
The Hornets have hired Trail Blazers scouting director Chad Buchanan as an assistant General Manager, league sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo (on Twitter). Buchanan will serve under GM Rich Cho, who gained full control of the front office when president of basketball operations Rod Higgins resigned last month.
Buchanan was in charge of Portland’s college scouting but had a fairly uneventful June as Portland didn’t have any picks in the 2014 draft. Buchanan has long been well-regarded in the Blazers front office and was considered for the GM job a couple of years back.
Latest On Greg Monroe
10:27am: The Cavs, too, are considering a run at Monroe, according to Stein (Twitter link).
9:52am: There’s a “high possibility” the Pistons will swing a sign-and-trade if Monroe gets a max offer from another team, a source tells Ken Berger of CBSSports.com (Twitter link).
TUESDAY, 12:58am: The Hawks also contacted Monroe tonight, a source close to the situation tells Alex Kennedy of Basketball insiders (on Twitter).
9:48pm: The Blazers also have serious interest in a sign-and-trade for Monroe, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.com.
8:53pm: The Pistons have made it known that they want to keep Greg Monroe but won’t rule out a sign-and-trade if his price tag gets to be too high, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.com. Stein adds (link) that the Hawks are one team that keeps coming up as a potential suitor for Monroe when he officially becomes a restricted free agent.
You can add the Magic to the list of teams that are said to have interest in the big man, Stein tweets. Monroe, who is ranked fifth in Chuck Myron’s Free Agent Power Rankings for this summer, figures to have many suitors in the coming weeks. However, the big man doesn’t sound all that eager to take a free agency tour.
“Most people would rather, if possible, not to have to go through it and just re-sign with the team they are with so you can have some stability and be secure,” Monroe said earlier this month. “Right now it’s like the draft process all over again. You don’t know if you will have to change cities or where you will end up. It’s a good thing that there are teams out there that want me. But at the end of the day, if I didn’t have to do it, I wouldn’t have a problem with that either.”
