On this date in 1994, Suns forward Charles Barkley hit 23-of-31 field goal attempts and finished with 56 points, leading the way to a 140-133 win over Golden State and a first round sweep. Barkley’s 56 points tied for the third-highest total ever in an NBA Playoff game, and his 38 points in the first half set a record. Sleepy Floyd holds the second-half scoring record in the NBA Playoffs with 39 points, which he scored in Golden State’s 129-121 home win over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the 1987 Western Conference Semifinals.

On this date in 1984, Isiah Thomas and Bernard King engaged in a great playoff shoot-out in Game 5 of the first round matchup between the Knicks and Pistons. King scored 12 of his game-high 44 points in the final five minutes and change in the fourth quarter but Thomas stole his thunder by tallying Detroit’s final 14 points in a span of just 1:34 to send the game into overtime where each star had four points. Ultimately, New York went on to win 127-123.

On this date in 1986, Bulls guard Michael Jordan scored an NBA Playoff record 63 points, but the Bulls dropped a 135-131 double-overtime decision to the Celtics at Boston Garden in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round. Jordan shot 22-of-41 from the field and 19-of-21 from the free throw line in his record performance, breaking Elgin Baylor’s previous mark of 61 points in a playoff game, set during the Lakers’ 126-121 road win at Boston in Game 5 of the 1962 NBA Finals. After the game, Boston’s Larry Bird shook his head and proclaimed “That was God disguised as Michael Jordan.”

On this date in 1994, the Sonics became the second NBA team to have ten different players score in double figures during a 150-101 win over the visiting Clippers as Detlef Schrempf led the scoring parade for Seattle with 21 points. Seattle also had ten double-figure scorers in a 135-104 win over the Trail Blazers on March 30, 1980, with Gus Williams notching a team-high 23 points. The Suns joined the group on November 23, 1994 during a 140-109 triumph over the Clippers as Wesley Person’s 19 points led ten double-figure scorers for the Suns.

On this date in 1979, the 76ers and the Nets replayed the final 17:50 of their contest that was originally played on November 8, 1978. In a bizarre wrinkle, Harvey Catchings and Ralph Simpson played for the 76ers and Eric Money and Al Skinner played for the Nets when the game began, but were traded to the opposing teams by the time the game was resumed. It’s the only time in the history of professional sports that any player played for both teams in the same game.

On this date in 1962, Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors scored 100 points, the most ever by an NBA player in a single game, during his team’s 169-147 win over the Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Chamberlain shot 36-of-63 from the field and 28-of-32 from the free throw line, to go with 25 rebounds. His 50.4 PPG scoring average in 80 games during the 1961-62 season remains an NBA record to this day and it’s hard to imagine it ever being broken.

Abdul-Jabbar went on to play in 1,560 games, which is second all-time to Robert Parish, who played in 1,611 games.
