On this date in 2000, Mike Jones scored 19 points, and Rasul Salahuddin and Wayman Strickland each added 16 to lead the NBA Ambassadors to a 103-68 victory over China’s CBA All-Stars in the decisive third game of the Asian Basketball Association League championship series. The NBA Ambassadors represented the NBA’s new D-League, which formally kicked off in November 2001.

Stanley Kroenke, a national real estate developer, announced he had completed the acquisition of the Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, and the Pepsi Center from Ascent Entertainment Group. Kroenke made the announcement at a news conference at the Pepsi Center following approvals of the $450MM acquisition by the NBA, NHL and the city of Denver.

On this date in 1994, led by Hakeem Olajuwon‘s 25 points, ten rebounds, and seven assists, the Rockets defeated the Knicks 90-84 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, giving the Rockets their first NBA championship in franchise history. Olajuwon averaged 26 9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.86 blocks for the series and was unanimously voted the Finals MVP, the first player to ever win the Defensive Player of the Year and both the regular season and Finals MVP awards in the same season. Meanwhile, Knicks guard Derek Harper set a Finals record for the most 3-point field goals made (17) in a seven-game series and Patrick Ewing set a Finals record for the most blocks in a series with 30.

Shaquille O’Neal was named NBA Finals MVP for the second consecutive season, joining Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players to win consecutive NBA Finals MVP awards.

Yesterday marked 21 years since the passing of legendary Nets guard Drazen Petrovic. On June 7th, 1993, the Croatian hero was killed in a car accident on Germany’s Autobahn 9. Petrovic will forever be remembered for his uncanny ability to fire from deep, his mean competitive streak, and boyish enthusiasm on the court. Petrovic, who had his No. 3 retired on Opening Day of the 1993/94 season, was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.

On this date in 1994, Pacers guard Reggie Miller drilled an NBA Playoff record five three-point field goals in the fourth quarter of the Pacers’ 93-86 win over the Knicks in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Miller finished with a game-high 39 points, including 6-of-11 from three-point range. Five players have since tied Miller’s record of five three-pointers in one quarter of a playoff game.
