Free Agent Rumors: Bucks, Clark, Bullock, Lakers
The Warriors have re-signed – or agreed to re-sign – many of the free agents from last year’s roster, including Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston, David West, and Zaza Pachulia. However, Ian Clark has not agreed to a new deal with the team and appears likely to head elsewhere.
One potential landing spot for Clark may be Milwaukee, according to Gery Woelfel of The Racine Journal Times, who hears from several sources that the Bucks have expressed interest in the free agent shooting guard. And that interest appears to be mutual, Woelfel adds.
Clark, who shot a career-high 37.4% on three-pointers last season, would provide the Bucks with some much-needed shooting. But it remains to be seen if Milwaukee will make him a competitive offer — once Tony Snell‘s new deal is finalized, the team will be getting very close to luxury tax territory.

- The Timberwolves inquired early in free agency on Reggie Bullock, but the Pistons and two other teams are pushing hardest for the swingman now, tweets Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News. According to Wolfson, Bullock figures to make a decision this week.
- Tyler Ennis, who finished the year with the Lakers, is among the free agent guards the team is considering, writes Mark Medina of The Los Angeles Daily News.
- Former Knicks and Nets guard Shane Larkin, who headed overseas a year ago, had an opportunity this summer to opt out if he gets an NBA offer, but appears poised to play for Barcelona in Spain on a lucrative new deal, as international basketball journalist David Pick details (Twitter links).
Bucks Sign Jalen Moore As Two-Way Player
The Bucks have signed Jalen Moore to a two-way contract, the team announced on its website.
A 6’8″ forward out of Utah State, Moore was a second team All-Mountain West selection after averaging 17.0 points and 5.5 rebounds during his senior season. He was a 38.3 shooter from 3-point range during his four years with the Aggies.
Under the new collective bargaining agreement, teams can have two-way players on their roster at any time, in addition to their regular 15-man roster. Moore will spend most of the season with Milwaukee’s new G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, and will be limited to 45 days with the Bucks from the time G League training camp opens until the end of the Herd’s season.
Moore is currently playing for the Bucks’ entry in the Las Vegas Summer League.
On Thursday, Milwaukee signed Bronson Koenig of Wisconsin as its other two-way player.
Hawks Request Waivers On Jamal Crawford
7:28pm: The Hawks have formally requested waivers on Crawford, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets.
The Cavs appear to be the frontrunners of all the teams mentioned to be in the hunt for Crawford’s services. Per Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, the veteran guard is “theirs to lose.” Crawford will be able to officially finalize a deal with the Cavs or another team once he clears waivers.
5:37pm: The Hawks have finalized a contract buyout with Jamal Crawford, Shams Charania of The Vertical tweets. The 36-year-old was acquired in the three-way deal that sent Danilo Gallinari to the Clippers.
Particularly interested in the news will be the Cavaliers and Celtics who, along with the Timberwolves, Bucks and Wizards, are reported to be in the mix for the services of the combo guard. David Aldridge of TNT notes that the Lakers could be in pursuit as well.
In 82 games for L.A. last season, Crawford posted 12.3 points per game. The veteran has spent each of the past five seasons with the Clippers and has long been one of the league’s most impactful reserves.
If a contending team like the Cavs or C’s lands the three-time Sixth Man of the Year, it may drastically bolster their shot at competing in the East.
Upon news of the buyout, which was also promptly reported by ESPN’s Chris Haynes, Sam Amick of USA Today notes that the Wolves, Wizards and Cavs are out front in the race to land the guard’s services.
Bucks Sign JeQuan Lewis
The Bucks have signed JeQuan Lewis to a free agent contract, the team announced via a press release on its website. The terms of the deal have not been made public.
The signing was announced along with that of Bronson Koenig’s two-way deal on Thursday.
Undrafted out of VCU, Lewis is a 6’0″ guard that put 15.2 points and 4.5 assists per game as a senior. He’ll compete for Milwaukee in the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, alongside Koenig.
Bucks Sign Second-Rounder Sterling Brown
The Bucks have signed second-round pick Sterling Brown out of SMU, Shams Charania of The Vertical tweets. The senior shooting guard averaged 13.4 points per game in the NCAA last season.
The two parties inked a three-year pact with the first two seasons guaranteed. Considering Milwaukee’s second-round pick ended up being Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon last season, the addition of Brown could end up being a shrewd move for the franchise.
Brown is a brother of former Lakers guard Shannon Brown and, per Draft Express’ scouting report, started to blossom as a pro prospect during his junior season. Now he’s an efficient jump shooter that has flown under the radar as a sleeper.
Latest On Jamal Crawford
4:21pm: The Celtics are also among the teams Crawford would consider if he’s bought out, tweets Michael Scotto of Basketball Insiders.
3:52pm: Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype (Twitter link) hears that in addition to the Wolves, Cavs, and Wizards, the Bucks would be in the mix for the shooting guard’s services in the event of a buyout. Kennedy mentions the Lakers as well, though Spears’ report (noted below) suggests the mutual interest between L.A. and Crawford has faded.
2:45pm: The three-team trade between the Nuggets, Clippers, and Hawks is expected to be finalized today and Jamal Crawford will work with Atlanta on a buyout agreement shortly after landing on the team, Chris Haynes of ESPN.com tweets.
It initially appeared that the shooting guard preferred to sign with the Lakers given his home in Los Angeles and his relationship with No. 2 overall pick Lonzo Ball. However, Marc J. Spears of the Undefeated reports (Twitter link) that neither Crawford nor the Lakers have much interest in working on a deal. The scribe adds that 37-year-old is expected to have interest from the Wolves, Cavs, and Wizards once a buyout is completed.
The Warriors were considered front-runners to sign Crawford earlier in the week, but the team opted to sign Nick Young to bolster its second unit. Crawford played for the Warriors during the 2008/09 season.
Atlanta is under no obligation to reach a buyout agreement with the shooting guard and the team could decide to trade him or keep him on the roster. It was reported earlier in the week that if Crawford wanted a buyout, he would have to give up a “significant portion” of his salary. He’s set to make over $17.2MM in guaranteed salary over the next two seasons.
Bucks Sign D.J. Wilson To Rookie Scale Deal
The Bucks have signed D.J. Wilson to a rookie scale deal, according to the team’s website. Assuming Wilson signed for 120% of the rookie scale, he will make slightly under $12.2MM over the next four seasons.
Wilson was the No. 17 overall pick out of the University of Michigan. The 6’10” forward led the Wolverines with 5.3 rebounds per game during his junior season. He also had a team-high 57 blocks on the year.
The 21-year-old will play for Milwaukee’s Summer League team in Las Vegas. The team opens competition on Friday against the Cavs.
Bucks, Bronson Koenig Finalize Two-Way Contract
JULY 6: The Bucks and Koenig have finalized an agreement on a two-way contract, agent Keith Kreiter tells Jake Fischer of SI.com (Twitter link).
JUNE 23: The Bucks are expected to reach a deal with Wisconsin product Bronson Koenig, Michael Scotto of Basketball Insiders tweets. The senior is the Badgers’ all-time three-point leader.
Per Sam Amico of AmicoHoops.net, the agreement will likely come in the form of a two-way deal, one of the new contractual mechanisms implemented by the latest collective bargaining agreement.
Until the signing is official, we won’t know exactly what the terms of the contract will be, so there exists the possibility that it’s simply for Summer League. But it sounds like Koenig will be with the Bucks for training camp.
Free Agent Rumors: Rose, Hayward, Randolph, Bogut
Free agent point guard Derrick Rose wants to play for the Bucks, a source close to Rose told Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times (Twitter link). Milwaukee will have to shed salary to make it happen. The team is over the salary cap and can only offer the $8.4MM mid-level exception unless it moves a big contract or two. Rose met with the Bucks on Monday. The Knicks are interested in bringing back Rose but it’s possible that New York could do a sign-and-trade with the Bucks.
In other free agent developments:
- Gordon Hayward will “sleep on” it before deciding which team he’ll sign with, Sam Amick of USA Today tweets. The highly-coveted Jazz small forward met with Utah for 3 1/2 hours on Monday after meeting with the Heat on Saturday and the Celtics on Sunday.
- The Kings don’t have much hope of signing veteran power forward Zach Randolph, sources informed Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee (Twitter link). The Cavaliers have a strong interest in Randolph, though he may have to leave money on the table to play for the three-time defending Eastern Conference champions.
- Andrew Bogut and his agent will talk to more than 10 teams as he seeks to come back from a fractured tibia, Steve Aschburner of NBA.com reports. Bogut suffered the injury in his Cavaliers debut on March 6. He did not require surgery and Bogut shed his cast a few weeks ago, Aschburner continues. The veteran center expects to begin full basketball workouts within the next three weeks, Aschburner adds.
Bucks Meeting With Derrick Rose
Free agent point guard Derrick Rose is meeting today with Bucks team officials, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (via Twitter). It’s the first we’ve heard of Milwaukee’s interest in Rose since the free agent period opened.
The Bucks have a young, talented roster led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, but could use some help at the point guard spot, making them a logical suitor for a veteran like Rose. Matthew Dellavedova was the club’s primary point guard last season, with Malcolm Brogdon and Jason Terry also seeing some action at the position.
Milwaukee’s current cap position may not be conducive to a pursuit of Rose. The team is over the cap, which would leave just the $8.4MM mid-level exception to offer the former MVP. However, Wojnarowski suggests (via Twitter) that Milwaukee has been making an effort to shed salary in order to make room for a more competitive offer for Rose.
While Wojnarowski doesn’t identify any specific players the Bucks are trying to move, Greg Monroe ($17.88MM) is the club’s most obvious trade candidate. Some combination of John Henson ($11.42MM), Mirza Teletovic ($10.5MM), and Spencer Hawes ($6.02MM) might also make sense as potential chips. I wouldn’t expect any of those players to have a whole lot of trade value though.
Rose, 28, is coming off a season in which he averaged 18.0 PPG and 4.4 APG in 64 games for the Knicks. There’s reportedly some interest within the Knicks front office in bringing back the former No. 1 overall pick, though a source tells Frank Isola of The New York Daily News that GM Steve Mills is opposed to the idea, and Mills currently has the final say on basketball decisions.
