Cavs’ Max Strus Nearing Season Debut

The Cavaliers have an NBA-best 21-4 record so far this season despite not yet having one of their five presumed starters available. According to Grant Afseth of RG.org, that fifth starter is on track to make his season debut later this week.

The expectation is that Cavs wing Max Strus will be available to suit up on Friday vs. Washington after recovering from the right ankle sprain that has sidelined him since before the regular season began, sources tell Afseth.

Strus initially sustained a hip contusion early in the preseason and was nearing a return from that injury when he sprained his ankle during an individual workout just days before the season opener.

Strus may not immediately reclaim his spot as Cleveland’s top small forward after starting 70 regular season games and 12 more playoff contests last season. Afseth suggests Strus will face a minutes restriction, and a previous report from Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com indicated the 28-year-old would likely come off the bench in his return.

“It’s like we signed a starting player to our team,”head coach Kenny Atkinson said of Strus’ impending return, per Afseth. “And now we’re going to have to figure out what that integration looks like, what the progression is… It’s a discussion with our performance team (about) what the minute build-up is going to look like.”

Strus was a solid contributor in his first year in Cleveland after signing a four-year, $62MM contract during the 2023 free agent period. He averaged 12.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game with a .351 3PT%. The Cavs are said to be eager to see what the veteran swingman looks like in Atkinson’s new up-tempo system.

Isaac Okoro (14 starts) and Dean Wade (nine starts) have been the primary replacements for Strus in the starting lineup so far this season. If and when Strus reclaims his starting spot and everyone’s healthy, they’ll be part of the second unit.

Nets Discussing Johnson, Finney-Smith, Schröder Trades; Warriors Have Interest

Nets veterans Cameron Johnson, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Dennis Schröder have all generated trade interest early this season, according to Shams Charania of ESPN (Insider link), who reports that Brooklyn has begun to have exploratory discussions involving the trio.

The Warriors are among the clubs that have expressed interest in those three players, sources tell Charania, who adds that rival teams believe Golden State is willing to use De’Anthony Melton‘s $12.8MM expiring contract and draft assets in a trade. Melton suffered a season-ending ACL injury last month.

While the wording of Charania’s report suggests Golden State has expressed interest in all three of those Nets trade candidates, Johnson looks to me like a less likely target for the Warriors. He has a $22.5MM cap hit and another $4.5MM in unlikely incentives that count toward the tax aprons, which could be problematic for a Warriors team operating right up against its hard cap.

Besides being a complicated fit from a salary perspective, Johnson is the player (of those three Nets) whose skill set overlaps least with Melton’s, so if Golden State is seeking a replacement for its injured guard, he’s not an obvious fit. But he’s off to a great start this season — his 18.8 points per game, 48.8% field goal percentage, and 43.4% three-point percentage would all be career highs.

Finney-Smith ($14.9MM) and Schröder ($13MM) have salaries in the range of Melton’s and have more in common with the 26-year-old guard on the court. Finney-Smith is a solid, versatile defender capable of knocking down three-point shots (a career-best 43.2% this season), while Schröder is a talented ball-handler, scorer, and play-maker whose 38.5% three-point rate and 2.5 three-pointers per game this season are career highs.

Besides having more modest cap hits, Finney-Smith and Schröder also have shorter-term contracts than Johnson. Schröder will be an unrestricted free agent in 2025 while Finney-Smith can join him by turning down his 2025/26 player option worth $15.4MM. Johnson’s contract runs through the 2026/27 season.

The Nets project to have the most cap room of any NBA team during the 2025 offseason, so they’ll likely try to avoid taking on multiyear contracts in any deal involving Finney-Smith and/or Schröder.

Besides registering interest in role players like the Nets’ trio, the Warriors remain interested in adding a star – ideally a play-maker and scorer – who could complement Stephen Curry, Charania reiterates.

Charania made a similar point during an NBA Today appearance last week, noting that Golden State will try to determine in the two months leading up to the February 6 trade deadline whether forward Jonathan Kuminga can become that sort of impact player or whether the club will need to keep trying to acquire a star via trade. The Warriors expressed trade interest over the summer in both Paul George and Lauri Markkanen.

Heat Open To Listening To Offers For Jimmy Butler

The Heat are open to listening to trade inquiries on star forward Jimmy Butler and making a deal if they get an offer they like, sources tell Shams Charania of ESPN (Insider link).

Reporting in the wake of Miami’s elimination from the 2024 playoffs indicated that Butler would be seeking a maximum-salary extension during the offseason. Asked about that possibility during his end-of-season press conference, president of basketball operations Pat Riley expressed reluctance to make that sort of financial investment in a player “unless you have someone who is going to be available every night,” a reference to Butler’s injury issues in recent seasons.

Butler subsequently decided to put off extension discussions and remain with the Heat rather than pushing for a trade.

As Charania writes, the 35-year-old still has a strong affinity for Miami and has been professional throughout this season, but with the Heat having hovered around play-in territory for the last couple years and Butler potentially reaching free agency at season’s end, the front office has been “open-minded” about trade inquires.

According to Charania, Butler’s agent Bernie Lee has made it clear in league circles that Butler would be open to destinations like the Rockets, Mavericks, and Warriors. While Butler is a Texas native, his top priority in the event of a trade is believed to be joining a team capable of contending for a championship.

Teams, including the Heat, have been informed that Butler intends to turn down his $52.4MM player option for the 2025/26 season in order to become a free agent next summer, sources tell ESPN. Still, given that few teams project to have significant cap room in 2025, the club that has Butler on its roster at the end of the season would likely be the favorite to re-sign him, since that club would hold his Bird rights.

Butler has missed five games for health reasons so far this season, but has been effective in his 17 outings, averaging 19.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in 32.1 minutes per game, with a .557/.360/.787 shooting line. The Heat have gone 10-7 in the games he has played and have a record of 2-3 when he’s been out.

Raptors Star Scottie Barnes Suffers Right Ankle Injury

Raptors star Scottie Barnes exited Monday’s game against the Knicks with what the team called a right ankle sprain, according to ESPN’s News Services. However, there is concern that the injury to his right ankle and foot could be more severe.

Barnes was helped off the court by teammates before hopping to the locker room, unable to put weight on his right foot. The injury occurred when he contested Knicks big man Karl-Anthony Towns‘s shot during the third quarter and Towns came down on Barnes’ foot near the basket (video link).

Initial X-rays were negative, according to head coach Darko Rajakovic, as Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports tweets. However, it’s anticipated Barnes will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. He’ll be reevaluated on Tuesday morning, Blake Murphy of Sportsnet adds (via Twitter).

Barnes has already missed 11 games this season due a right orbital fracture. He entered the game averaging 21 points, 8.7 rebounds and 7.8 assists per contest.

Barnes signed a five-year max extension and the contract’s value would increase if he made an All-NBA team this season. However, another extended absence would extinguish any chance of that happening due to the 65-game rule.

Pacers Waive Moses Brown

3:09pm: The Pacers have officially waived Brown, the team announced in a press release.

2:12pm: The Pacers are waiving big man Moses Brown, league sources tell Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link).

A well-traveled center who has appeared in 159 total regular season games for seven different teams since making his NBA debut in 2019, Brown signed with Indiana last month after the team had two of its top three centers – James Wiseman and Isaiah Jackson – go down with season-ending Achilles tears.

Brown saw a little playing time in the Pacers’ depleted frontcourt, but averaged just 5.1 minutes per contest across nine total appearances, contributing 3.2 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. After playing in each of his first eight games with Indiana, the 25-year-old was on the court for just 25 seconds last Wednesday, then was a DNP-CD on Friday and Sunday.

The Pacers don’t have a ton of breathing room below the luxury tax line, so if Brown isn’t going to play, there’s little reason to keep him on the roster. Assuming he clears waivers, Indiana will be on the hook for only a small prorated portion of his non-guaranteed minimum salary contract — that cap charge will be $306,660 if he’s officially released today.

The move will open up a spot on the Pacers’ 15-man roster. It’s unclear whether the front office intends to bring in a new 15th man soon or whether the club will keep that spot open for the foreseeable future in order to maximize its roster and financial flexibility.

Luka Doncic, Tyler Herro Named Players Of The Week

Mavericks guard Luka Doncic has been named the Western Conference Player of the Week, while Heat guard Tyler Herro has earned the honor in the Eastern Conference, the NBA announced today (Twitter link).

Doncic, who recently returned from a wrist injury, led the Mavericks to a 3-0 record during the week of December 2-8, putting up 29.3 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game in wins over Memphis, Washington, and Toronto. He made 14-of-32 three-pointers during those three victories, good for a 43.8% rate.

As for Herro, his week began with a resounding 19-point loss to the defending champions in Boston last Monday, but he and the Heat bounced back in impressive fashion, outscoring the Lakers, Suns, and Cavaliers by a combined 60 points (including a 41-point blowout of L.A.) to finish the week with a 3-1 record.

Herro averaged 25.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists in 33.0 minutes per game across those four contests, posting an excellent shooting line of .507/.436/.875. It’s the first time in his six-year NBA career that he has won a Player of the Week award, whereas it’s Doncic’s 14th such honor.

Anthony Edwards, Nikola Jokic, Domantas Sabonis, and Thunder teammates Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams were also nominated for the Western Conference Player of the Week award, per the league (Twitter link). In the East, Herro beat out fellow nominees Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown, Brandon Miller, Evan Mobley, Nikola Vucevic, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey.

Embiid: Ongoing Knee Issues “Extremely Depressing”

Joel Embiid made a triumphant return to action on Sunday but he was far from jubilant afterward. The Sixers superstar center expressed exasperation to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps over his ongoing left knee issues that have kept him out of action most of the season.

“Depressing. Just trying to figure it out. There’s no injury. Just between the swelling … we’ve got to get it figured out. That’s it,” he said. “I’ve been saying it for the last few months. It’s been extremely depressing. It’s something that hasn’t been figured out, and it’s been extremely annoying, because I would love to play every single game.”

In uniform for just the fifth time this season and the first time since Nov. 20, Embiid logged 33 minutes against Chicago and contributed 31 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

It was just the second time this season that Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George played in the same game. During their 26 minutes on the court together, the Sixers outscored the Bulls by 14 points.

“It’s easier, man. There’s a lot more space out there,” Maxey said of Embiid’s return. “I felt like today, even when he’s out there and I’m not out there, it’s harder to maybe trap or whatever. They can’t trap ball screens, you know what I mean? Either or if they don’t drive, then I can score or shoot 3 or if they drop too much and help too much for me, I’m pocket passing to him and he’s getting a layup or a [midrange jumper] … it makes the game easier.”

Embiid signed a three-year max extension in September and recent reports have detailed the extensive medical testing he underwent prior to the extension agreement. The team had anticipated Embiid’s issues would be manageable and were surprised by the early absences as he continued the rehab process.

“It felt good to have the guys on the floor. I believe if we’re healthy, and we’re on the floor, we have a chance against anybody, and I like what we have,” Embiid said. “I think the whole thing is about health … that’s what it comes down to. I wish I could have been playing from the beginning. I would love to play every single game, every single minute, but sometimes your body just says, ‘No,’ and you can’t do nothing about it. All you can do is just keep working to fix it and get better.”

Sixers’ Joel Embiid To Return Sunday

Former MVP Joel Embiid will return to Philadelphia’s starting lineup on Sunday afternoon vs. Chicago, the Sixers announced (via Twitter).

Embiid, who has missed the past seven games, was questionable heading into Sunday’s contest due to left knee injury management. Prior to the game, head coach Nick Nurse said the star center would be on a minutes restriction if he was able to suit up (Twitter link via K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Sports Network).

The 30-year-old big man has been limited to just four games this season. Embiid underwent surgery on the knee last winter prior to returning at the end of the 2023/24 season. He managed to play in the 2024 Olympics in Paris with Team USA, but has experienced swelling and discomfort to open ’24/25. He was also suspended for three games after an altercation with a columnist and has missed time for personal reasons.

As Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer writes, Embiid will almost certainly be ineligible for major postseason awards for the second straight season. He has already missed 17 games in ’24/25, and if he misses one more, he’ll be disqualified due to the 65-game rule.

The 76ers have won three of their past four games, but are still just 6-15, making them the No. 13 seed in the East.

Brandon Ingram Out Indefinitely With “Significant” Ankle Sprain

Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram has sustained a “significant” low left ankle sprain and will be out indefinitely, sources tell Shams Charania of ESPN.

Ingram, 27, suffered the injury early in the third quarter of Saturday’s loss to Oklahoma City. While driving into the lane, Ingram rose up for a shot and was whistled for an offensive foul after his elbow appeared to hit Luguentz Dort, who fell to the ground (YouTube link). Ingram’s left foot landed on Dort’s right foot, causing his ankle to roll. He had to be helped off the court by his teammates.

According to Charania, Ingram left the Smoothie King Center — New Orleans’ home arena — in a walking boot and crutches.

Ingram helped the Pelicans snap a nine-game losing streak on Thursday vs. Phoenix by scoring a game-high 29 points, only to suffer the ankle sprain in his second game back after missing the previous five contests with a right leg injury.

It’s yet another setback for the Pelicans, who have dealt with numerous injuries to key players this season, and for Ingram, who has been sidelined by various injuries throughout his nine-year career. The former No. 2 overall pick will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

In 18 games this season (33.1 minutes), Ingram has averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists, with a shooting line of .465/.374/.855. Due in large part to their crushing wave of injuries, the Pelicans are just 5-19, last place in the Western Conference.

With Ingram out and Zion Williamson (hamstring), Jose Alvarado (hamstring) and Jordan Hawkins (back) still sidelined, Trey Murphy will likely slide back into the starting lineup, with Javonte Green and Brandon Boston among the other candidates for more shots and minutes.

Franz Wagner Out Indefinitely Due To Torn Oblique

Magic forward Franz Wagner has been diagnosed with a torn right oblique and will be sidelined indefinitely, according to Shams Charania of ESPN, who reports that Wagner will be reevaluated in four weeks.

The Magic have confirmed the news (Twitter link). The injury occurred during Friday’s game in Philadelphia.

It’s a brutal blow for an Orlando team that has already been without one star, Paolo Banchero, for more than a month. Not only will Wagner join his fellow forward on the injured list, but he has sustained essentially the same injury — Banchero has been out since October 30 due to a torn right oblique of his own.

Wagner served as the second option on offense behind Banchero for the past couple seasons, but the Magic gave him a five-year, maximum-salary extension in July, signaling their confidence in his ability to continue developing into an All-Star caliber player. His star turn was taking place this fall as he took the reins of Orlando’s offense with Banchero sidelined.

In 20 games without Banchero available so far this season, Wagner has averaged 26.1 points, 6.3 assists, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.8 steals in 35.0 minutes per contest.

Banchero said in mid-November that he hoped to return to the court by Christmas, though he admitted that was his own goal and wouldn’t necessarily be approved by the Magic’s medical team. Even if Banchero meets that timeline, Orlando will likely have to get by for at least a couple more weeks without either of its top two scorers.

Jalen Suggs and Moritz Wagner have been the Magic’s next-best scorers behind Wagner in recent weeks and will be asked to take on additional scoring responsibilities. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Anthony Black, Wendell Carter Jr., Cole Anthony, and Goga Bitadze are among the others who figure to be leaned upon more on that side of the floor. However, it seems safe to assume the Magic, who already rank just 24th in the NBA with a 110.3 offensive rating, could have some trouble scoring in the immediate future.

After starting the season with a 3-6 record, Orlando has won 13 of its last 16 games and sits at 16-9, good for third in the Eastern Conference. That strong start should help the club stay afloat until they get Banchero and Wagner back.
