Jazz Sign Bez Mbeng To Two-Year Deal
April 3: The sigining is official, according to a team press release.
April 2, 11:31 am: Mbeng will be signing a two-year contract, agent Jason Tranos tells ESPN’s Shams Charania (Twitter link). While Charania doesn’t provide any additional details, that second year is unlikely to be guaranteed.
April 2, 7:43 am: Bez Mbeng‘s second 10-day contract with the Jazz expired on Wednesday night, but he won’t be going anywhere, reports Sarah Todd of The Deseret News. According to Todd, Utah will be signing Mbeng for the rest of the season.
Mbeng, 22, made 11 appearances during his first 20 days with the Jazz after first joining the team on March 13. The 6’4″ shooting guard played regular rotation minutes during that time for a banged-up Utah squad, averaging 5.0 points, 3.4 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 29.9 minutes per night.
While Mbeng’s shooting numbers (.429/.167/.667) have been modest, the Jazz have apparently liked what they’ve seen from the former Yale star, especially on defense. The 22-year-old, who earned three Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year awards from 2023-25 before going undrafted last June, spent most of his rookie year with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Miami’s G League affiliate, until he signed with Utah.
The Jazz would have the ability to sign Mbeng to a multiyear deal, though Todd doesn’t confirm that’s the plan. We’ll have to wait for the full details of the agreement to confirm the terms, but if it’s just a rest-of-season contract, the guard would be eligible for restricted free agency this summer.
Mbeng earned $73,153 on each of his two 10-day deals. If he officially re-signs on Thursday, a rest-of-season minimum-salary contract would pay him slightly more than that ($80,469), for a total of $226,775 on top of the salary he earned in the G League.
Once Mbeng is signed, the Jazz will have have 14 players on full-season or multiyear standard contracts, with Kennedy Chandler filling the 15th roster spot on a 10-day deal.
Jazz Sign Bez Mbeng To Second 10-Day Contract
The Jazz have signed guard Bez Mbeng to a second 10-day contract, according to a team press release.
The former Yale star has appeared in five games (one start) with Utah, averaging 4.8 points, 4.2 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals in 33.4 minutes per contest. He played 45 minutes against Philadelphia on Saturday, supplying 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
Mbeng has also seen action in 41 games (12 starts) this season with the NBA G League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce, posting 6.5 points on 49.5 percent shooting, along with 5.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.8 steals in 27.5 minutes per contest.
The 22-year-old was signed by the Heat to a camp contract in mid-October, then was quickly waived, lining him up to join Miami’s G League affiliate.
Mbeng, who has a reputation as being a strong defender, went undrafted in June after a standout four-year college career at Yale. He was named the Ivy League’s Defensive Player of the Year for three straight seasons and won the conference’s Player of the Year award in 2024/25 as well.
A 6’4″ guard, Mbeng averaged 13.0 points, 5.8 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals on .429/.368/.699 shooting in 29 appearances last season (32.7 minutes per game). He helped the Bulldogs reach the NCAA tournament in three of his four years at Yale and is the school’s all-time leader in steals.
Once Mbeng’s latest 10-day contract expires, he would have to sign a rest-of-season contract to remain with Utah.

Utah currently has two other players — Mo Bamba and Andersson Garcia — signed to 10-day deals and has a full 15-man roster. Unless they qualify for a hardship exception, which is a possibility, the Jazz will have to let someone go to make room to sign Mbeng.
Heat Waive Achiuwa, Three Others; Convert Young To Two-Way Deal
October 18: Miami has officially announced the four cuts detailed below, along with Young’s conversion to a two-way deal.
October 17: The Heat have waived big man Precious Achiuwa ahead of the regular season, per Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald (Twitter link).
Miami has also released Ethan Thompson, Dain Dainja, and Bez Mbeng, Chiang adds.
All four players were signed to non-guaranteed contracts for training camp, so the Heat won’t carry any money on their books by cutting them loose.
A 6’8″ forward/center, Achiuwa has spent the past five years in the NBA after being selected 20th overall by Miami in the 2020 draft. The 26-year-old has appeared in 320 regular season games with the Heat, Raptors and Knicks over that span, with career averages of 7.6 points and 5.7 rebounds in 20.0 minutes per contest.
It’s unclear where Achiuwa will land next after he was unable to find a new team for most of the offseason — he didn’t sign with the Heat until late September.
Thompson, Dainja and Mbeng were on Exhibit 10 deals with Miami are now eligible for bonuses worth up to $85,300 as long as they spend at least 60 days with the team’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
By process of elimination, it appears that guard Jahmir Young will fill the Heat’s third and final two-way spot, as Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel tweets. The Heat can simply convert Young’s Exhibit 10 deal to a two-way pact and intend to do so, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link).
A 6’1″ point guard who went undrafted out of Maryland in 2024, Young opened his first professional season with the Grand Rapids Gold, before signing a two-way deal with Chicago in February and finishing the year with the Bulls.
Although he logged just 30 total minutes in six games at the NBA level, but starred in the NBAGL, averaging 21.7 points, 7.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game in 43 total outings for the Nuggets’ and Bulls’ affiliates. The 24-year-old was named to the G League’s All-Rookie team and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting.
Heat Sign Bez Mbeng, Waive Steve Settle III
The Heat have signed guard Bez Mbeng and requested waivers on forward Steve Settle III, according to a team press release.
Mbeng went undrafted in June after a standout four-year college career at Yale. He was named the Ivy League’s Defensive Player of the Year each of the past three seasons and won the conference’s Player of the Year award in 2024/25 as well.
While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, Mbeng almost certainly signed an Exhibit 10 deal and will be waived sometime in the next couple days. If that comes to fruition, he would be eligible for a bonus worth up to $85,300 if he spends at least 60 days with Miami’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
Settle, who went undrafted earlier this year, was signed earlier this week to an Exhibit 10 contract.
