And-Ones: Hinkie, Mental Health Program, RFAs, Wear

Sam Hinkie, who is often credited for the current success of the Sixers, has reportedly landed a consultation role with the Denver Broncos of the National Football League, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic (subscription required). Hinkie served as the Sixers’ general manager from 2013 until 2016 when he stepped down from the role.

Hinkie is viewed as a pioneer for analytics use in the NBA and using data to build a team. The 40-year-old was at the helm for several poor seasons for Philadelphia but his strategy helped the organization stockpile several top picks, which led to a rejuvenation, culminating this season with a 52-30 regular season. Hinkie previously was the youngest vice president in NBA history when he landed the title with the Rockets in 2007.

In his role with the Broncos, Hinkie will be an analytics consultant that helps with the team’s strategy for years to come. Jhabvala examines all of the top Broncos personnel Hinkie met with and their expectations from his respected acumen.

Where Last Season’s 10-Day Signees Are Now

Four dozen players signed 10-day contracts last season, and while some remain with their NBA teams, others are long gone. Two are reportedly working out for the Lakers today — Sean Kilpatrick and Toure’ Murry — while another, David Wear, signed with Fuenlabrada of Spain, the team announced today (Twitter link; translation via Sportando’s Enea Trapani). Pacific Notes: Nash, Wear, Len

Speaking at his retirement press conference Steve Nash said that he considered his time with the Lakers a failure, Joey Ramirez of NBA.com relays. “I came here with huge hopes and dreams and was incredibly excited and humble to have the opportunity to come here and play for the Lakers and the world’s biggest fan base,” Nash said. “For it just not to be in the cards was a failure and a huge disappointment. It’s been a difficult period of my career and my life to battle through that and to try to make something of it, which was fruitless in the end. But I know I’ve never worked harder. I never wanted something more, and I never worked harder. It just wasn’t to be.

Here’s more from the Pacific Division:

  •  Nash said that he understands the backlash he received from Lakers fans regarding him not being around the team this season, Bill Oram of The Orange County Register writes. “I really needed to get away,” Nash said. “I had an incredible amount of stress and anxiety. I wanted something so bad and held on way too long. Probably over-trained to get there. I needed to get some space.”
  • Suns coach Jeff Hornacek insists that center Alex Len will be “a great player,” and his rapid progress is seen on almost a daily basis, Matt Petersen of NBA.com writes. “He’s getting smarter and smarter every day,” Hornacek said. “He’s backed off a little bit on the pick-and-rolls. He knows the speed of the guys better, it seems like. He made a couple plays where I thought guys were going to have lay-ups…yet he can block it late. Those are big plays.
  • Quite a bit has changed with the Kings organization since David Wear, who recently inked a 10-day deal with the team, was in training camp with them earlier this season, Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee writes. The forward is excited to get a shot to play in the NBA, Jones adds. “Of course I’ve been waiting, hoping for a call-up, so when I got the call, I was thrilled,” Wear said. “That’s what this whole year’s been all about, and it’s good to finally be here.”

Kings Sign David Wear To 10-Day Deal

MONDAY, 12:53pm: The signing is official, the team announced.

SUNDAY, 10:09pm: The Kings will call up big man David Wear from their D-League affiliate, the Reno Bighorns, for a 10-day contract, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports (Twitter link). In 43 games, Wear has averaged 16.3 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game for Reno. He is shooting 47.8% from the field and 39.4% from three-point range.

Sacramento currently has 14 players on its roster, as Hoops Rumors’ roster counts show, so signing Wear would not necessitate a corresponding move. Wear was one of the Kings’ final cuts before the preseason after he signed a non-guaranteed one-year contract for camp. He was acquired by Reno on November 2nd. Wear thrived in Reno’s run-and-gun system and participated in the Three-Point Contest during the 2015 D-League All-Star Weekend. He could provide the Kings some extra scoring and solid defense if given playing time with the Kings, who are 24-45.

Wear’s twin brother, Travis Wear, is a forward on the Knicks. The twins played together at UCLA for two seasons after they both transferred from North Carolina. UCLA gave David Wear the Irv Pohlmeyer Memorial Trophy for top defensive player after the 2013/14 season.

Kings Waive Bhullar, Burton, Wear

2:12pm: The Kings confirmed that they have waived the trio.

8:43am: The Kings intend to waive Sim Bhullar, Deonte Burton, and David Wear, Sean Cunningham of News 10 Sacramento reports (Twitter link). Burton and Wear were in camp on non-guaranteed minimum salary deals, but Bhullar had a partial guarantee of $35K on his pact which Sacramento is on the hook for unless another team submits a waiver claim. These moves will reduce the Kings’ preseason roster count to 15, with 13 of those agreements being fully guaranteed. No announcement from the team has been made yet.

When Bhullar was signed by the Kings it marked the first time a player of Indian descent joined the NBA. The 7’5″ big man had  declared for the NBA draft in mid-April, shortly after he and New Mexico State were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Bhullar averaged 10.1 PPG, 6.7 RPG, and 2.4 BPG in 24.4 MPG while shooting 62.1% from the field as a freshman and 10.4 PPG, 7.8 RPG, and 3.4 BPG, while shooting 64.8% as a sophomore.

The 23-year-old Burton spent summer league with the Wizards after going undrafted, averaging just 1.8 points in 17.3 minutes per contest, but he put up much better numbers as a senior with the Nevada Wolf Pack this past season, chipping in for 20.1 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 4.4 assists against 2.0 turnovers in 38.6 MPG.

Wear, a 6’9″ 23-year-old, spent time in the summer league with the Bulls, averaging 4.8 points and 2.0 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game across five appearances. He didn’t log impressive numbers at UCLA, going for 6.5 PPG and 3.8 RPG in 22.9 MPG. His playing time decreased each successive year after he saw 28.4 MPG as a sophomore. Wear transferred to UCLA after spending his freshman year at North Carolina.

Kings Sign David Wear For Camp

SEPTEMBER 25TH: The deal is official, the team confirmed on its training camp roster.

SEPTEMBER 4TH, 10:33pm: Wear has signed his contract with the Kings, according to the RealGM transaction log. There’s still yet to be an official announcement from the team.

1:54pm: It’ll be a non-guaranteed contract that covers one season, as Jones writes in his full story.

1:17pm: The Kings are set to sign undrafted former UCLA small forward David Wear to a deal for training camp, reports Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee (Twitter link). Presumably it’ll be a minimum-salary contract, with perhaps a small partial guarantee.

The 6’9″ 23-year-old performed a few predraft workouts for NBA teams, but there wasn’t much buzz surrounding Wear in advance of draft night. He spent summer league with the Bulls, averaging 4.8 points and 2.0 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game across five appearances. He didn’t put up eye-popping numbers at UCLA, either, going for 6.5 PPG and 3.8 RPG in 22.9 MPG. His playing time decreased each successive year after he saw 28.4 MPG as a sophomore. Wear transferred to UCLA after spending his freshman year at North Carolina.

Wear joins 16 others who have agreements with the Kings, though only 12 of those deals are fully guaranteed, as our roster counts show. That includes Jason Terry, whom the team has agreed to trade to the Rockets for one or more non-guaranteed contracts. The Kings are also reportedly expected to waive Jeremy Tyler, whom Sacramento acquired via trade last month.

Draft Updates: Saric, Celtics, Lakers, Raptors

It’s unclear whether early entrant Dario Saric wants to play in the NBA next season or remain in Europe, but if either the Celtics or Lakers draft him, he plans to come stateside, reports David Pick of Eurobasket.com (Twitter link). Most projections have him going a little lower than Boston’s No. 6 pick or L.A.’s No. 7 pick, but perhaps the knowledge of his immediate willingness to play will prompt one of those teams to bite. Here’s the latest from a busy draft workout scene:

  • Raptors GM Masai Ujiri is open to trading up in the draft and praised Toronto native Tyler Ennis, whom the team had in for a workout today, notes Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun (on Twitter). The free agency of Kyle Lowry and Greivis Vasquez won’t play into Ujiri’s decision about drafting a point guard, the GM added.
  • The Raptors released their workout list for today on their website, and they’re auditioning Jake Odum, Jordan Dykstra, Norvel Pelle, Jordan Bachynski and Chadrack Lufile in addition to names that have already been reported.
  • Casey Prather is the new name among those working out for the Heat today, as Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com tweets.
  • Goodman adds DeAndre Kane and David Wear to the list of players auditioning for the Suns (Twitter link).
  • Billy Baron has shown off for the Bulls and Hawks and will do so for the Jazz, Bucks and Knicks next week, Goodman hears (Twitter link).
  • Kendall Williams is among the players working out for Hawks today, Goodman tweets.
  • Victor Rudd and Jakarr Sampson are the new names on the list of players working out for the Bucks today that the team announced on its website.
