Hornets Waive DJ Rodman

The Hornets have waived DJ Rodman, the team’s PR department tweets.

Rodman was added to the camp roster last week after the team signed and waived him earlier in September.

Rodman, the son of Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman and brother to NWSL superstar Trinity Rodman, has been in the G League since going undrafted out of USC in 2024. He split his 2024/25 season with the Capital City Go-Go and Maine Celtics. In 25 games with Maine, he averaged 6.8 points and 5.7 rebounds in 24.2 minutes per contest.

More recently, he suited up for Charlotte’s Summer League squad.

The 6’6” Rodman spent five collegiate seasons with Washington State and the Trojans, averaging 6.1 PPG on .411/.354/.764 shooting. He also averaged 4.2 RPG, 1.0 APG and 0.5 SPG across his 143 NCAA games.

Assuming Rodman goes unclaimed on waivers, he’ll earn a bonus worth $25K if he joins Charlotte’s G League squad, the Greensboro Swarm, and remains with that team for at least 60 days.

Hornets Sign Ibou Badji, DJ Rodman

10:20 am: In addition to signing Badji, the Hornets have also re-added DJ Rodman to their camp roster, the team confirmed today in a press release. Rodman was initially signed and waived by Charlotte last week.

The team now has a full 21-man squad.

8:28 am: The Hornets are adding free agent center Ibou Badji to their preseason roster, according to Rod Boone of The Charlotte Observer (Twitter link).

While Boone doesn’t specify what type of contract Badji is signing with the Hornets, it will almost certainly be non-guaranteed, with Exhibit 9 language. If it also includes an Exhibit 10 clause, it could be converted to a two-way deal prior to the regular season or would line up the big man to earn a bonus worth up to $85,300 if he’s waived and then spends at least 60 days with the Greensboro Swarm, Charlotte’s G League affiliate.

Badji, who will turn 23 next month, appeared in 22 NBA games during the 2023/24 season while on a two-way contract with Portland. He averaged 1.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks in 10.3 minutes per contest during his time with the Trail Blazers.

Outside of that stint in Portland, Badji has spent the rest of his professional career playing in the G League or in Spain, including most recently with La Laguna Tenerife, which competes in Spain’s top basketball league (Liga ACB). He headed overseas in the spring after appearing in 50 games for the Wisconsin Herd during the 2024/25 G League season.

The seven-footer from Senegal put up 6.0 PPG, 5.4 RPG, and an impressive 3.5 BPG in 22.4 MPG for the Herd, earning himself as spot on the NBAGL’s All-Defensive team.

The Swarm acquired Badji’s returning rights from Wisconsin in August, which suggests that the plan is for him to eventually report to Greensboro.

The Hornets have two openings on their roster, so no corresponding move is necessary to make room for the signing.

Hornets Sign Terrell Brown Jr.

The Hornets continue to swap players in and out of the final spot on their 21-man offseason roster, announcing today (via Twitter) that they’ve signed guard Terrell Brown Jr.

Since waiving veteran wing DaQuan Jeffries last Thursday, the Hornets have rotated players on Exhibit 10 contracts through that 21st roster spot in order to ensure those players receive bonus money if and when they report to Charlotte’s G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm.

Prior to signing Brown, the Hornets also briefly carried DJ Rodman, Marcus Garrett, Brandon Slater, and Keyontae Johnson. Rodman was waived to make room for Brown.

Brown, who went undrafted out of Washington in 2022, has spent most of his first three professional seasons in the G League, including the past two years with the Greensboro Swarm. He appeared in 48 NBAGL games in 2024/25, averaging 7.6 points, 4.3 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 22.0 minutes per contest, with a shooting line of .405/.229/.859.

In all likelihood, Brown will soon be waived and will have the opportunity to earn an Exhibit 10 bonus worth up to $85,300 if he spends at least 60 days with the Swarm this season.

Hornets Sign DJ Rodman, Cut Marcus Garrett

The Hornets have signed free agent forward DJ Rodman and cut guard Marcus Garrett, the club announced (Twitter link).

Rodman, the son of Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman and brother to NWSL superstar Trinity, has been in the G League since going undrafted out of USC in 2024. He split his 2024/25 season with the Capital City Go-Go and Maine Celtics. Most recently, he suited up for Charlotte’s Summer League squad.

Rodman logged five collegiate seasons with Washington State and the Trojans, averaging 6.1 PPG on .411/.354/.764 shooting. The 6-foot-6 wing also averaged 4.2 RPG, 1.0 APG and 0.5 SPG across his 143 NCAA games.

Exact details of the contract have yet to be divulged, but it is likely to be an Exhibit 10 training camp deal for the 24-year-old. Garrett had also been inked to an Exhibit 10 contract.

Assuming Rodman and Garrett sign G League contracts and spend at least 60 days with the Hornets’ NBAGL affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, each player will be eligible to earn a bonus worth up to $85,300 on top of his base G League salary.

Exhibit 10 signings can be promoted to two-way contracts, but at present, all three of Charlotte’s two-way contract slots are occupied.

2024 NBA G League Draft Results

The NBA G League held its draft for the 2024/25 season on Saturday afternoon. Players who signed NBAGL contracts and whose rights weren’t already controlled by a team were part of the draft pool.

It was the first time in G League history that each of the 30 NBA teams had an affiliate squad take part in a draft. A 31st team, the unaffiliated Mexico City Capitanes, also participated.

The Westchester Knicks, New York’s affiliate, held the top two picks in Saturday’s draft and used them to select a pair of NBA veterans.

The No. 1 overall pick was sharpshooter Matt Ryan, who is reportedly drawing interest from the Knicks and is a candidate to be called up to their NBA roster at some point this season.

Drafting Ryan to Westchester won’t prevent another NBA team from poaching him, since holding a player’s G League rights doesn’t mean you control his NBA rights. But it will give the Knicks a chance to take a first-hand look at him before potentially offering him a standard or two-way contract.

Ryan has knocked down 41.1% of his three-point attempts in 63 career NBA games for the Celtics, Lakers, Timberwolves, and Pelicans.

The second player off the board was swingman Landry Shamet, who is recovering from a dislocated shoulder. Selecting him in the G League draft will allow the Knicks to keep him in the organization and closely monitor his rehabilitation process.

Shamet was expected to make the NBA roster prior to the injury and will be a candidate to rejoin the NBA squad later in the season if he fully recovers from his shoulder injury. He was the most experienced player in the NBAGL draft pool, with 348 career regular season outings at the NBA level.

Another notable name was picked fifth overall, as former NBA first-round pick Chandler Hutchison came out of retirement and was drafted by the Long Island Nets. Hutchison, 28, was the No. 22 pick in the 2018 NBA draft and appeared in 103 total games over the next four seasons for Chicago, Washington, and Phoenix.

Although the Nets’ affiliate technically drafted Hutchison, he was traded to the Cleveland Charge (Cavaliers) in a four-team trade that saw No. 3 pick Sean East II sent to the South Bay Lakers and Colin Castleton‘s returning rights acquired by Long Island. The full details of the deal, which also involved the Santa Cruz Warriors, can be found here.

East reportedly agreed to an Exhibit 10 deal with the Lakers back in June, but that signing never became official. It’s not clear why, but after his rights were acquired by South Bay on draft day, the former Missouri guard will head to Los Angeles’ affiliate after all.

Finally, a pair of familiar names were selected late in the second round, with the 53rd and 54th overall picks. The Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Rockets‘ affiliate, nabbed former Knicks guard Allonzo Trier, followed by the Maine Celtics (Boston’s affiliate) drafting Kavion Pippen, the cousin of Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr. and nephew of Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen.

Kavion Pippen wasn’t the only family member of a Hall of Famer who came off the board in the second round. The Capital City Go-Go (Wizards) picked former USC forward DJ Rodman, the son of Dennis Rodman, with the 43rd overall pick.

Teams will fill out their rosters with affiliate players, returning rights players, tryout players, and players who are assigned to the G League from the NBA roster (including those on two-way contracts).

G League training camps open on Monday, with this year’s NBAGL Tip-Off Tournament getting underway on November 8. The Tip-Off Tournament will be played over about a month-and-a-half and will be followed by the G League regular season, which begins on December 27.
