Spurs Waive Javante McCoy

The Spurs have waived guard Javante McCoy less than a week after signing him to an Exhibit 10 contract, per NBA.com’s official transaction log.

McCoy, 25, spent his rookie season in 2022/23 with the South Bay Lakers in the G League after going undrafted out of Boston University. He came off the bench in 26 regular season NBAGL games, averaging 14.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 25.8 minutes per contest. His shooting line was .524/.370/.767.

McCoy played for San Antonio’s Summer League team in Sacramento and Las Vegas this July, appearing in six total games for the club.

The Austin Spurs recently acquired McCoy’s G League rights in a trade with South Bay. That move – along with the fact that he was waived so soon after being signed – signals that San Antonio intends to have him report to its NBAGL affiliate this fall. Assuming he spends at least 60 days with Austin, McCoy will earn a bonus worth $75K on top of his G League salary.

The Spurs now have 20 players under contract, leaving one open spot on their 21-man offseason roster.

The Spurs have signed free agent guard Javante McCoy to an Exhibit 10 contract, Hoops Rumors has learned. The move gives San Antonio a full 21-man offseason roster.

McCoy, 25, spent his rookie season in 2022/23 with the South Bay Lakers in the G League after going undrafted out of Boston University. He came off the bench in 26 regular season NBAGL games, averaging 14.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 25.8 minutes per contest. His shooting line was .524/.370/.767.

McCoy played for San Antonio’s Summer League team in Sacramento and Las Vegas this July, appearing in six total games for the club.

The Spurs are carrying 17 players on standard guaranteed contracts and three on two-way deals, so there likely won’t be a spot for McCoy on their regular season roster. The Austin Spurs – San Antonio’s G League affiliate – recently acquired McCoy’s rights in a trade with South Bay, which is a strong signal that he’ll end up reporting to Austin as a returning rights player.

Assuming McCoy is waived by San Antonio prior to the season and then spends at least 60 days with Austin, he’ll be eligible to earn a $75K bonus on top of his G League salary.

Lakers Waive Bacon, McCoy; Sign Harrison, Figueroa

The Lakers have completed a series of roster moves, announcing today in a press release that they’ve waived camp invitees Dwayne Bacon and Javante McCoy and filled those newly-opened spots by signing guards Shaquille Harrison and L.J. Figueroa.

McCoy had an Exhibit 10 clause in his contract and could end up joining the South Bay Lakers, Los Angeles’ G League affiliate. However, Bacon’s deal wasn’t an Exhibit 10, so he’ll likely seek out a new opportunity.

The details of Harrison’s and Figueroa’s contracts haven’t been reported, but they’re almost certainly non-guaranteed camp deals as well. Since South Bay previously acquired Figueroa’s returning rights from the Santa Cruz Warriors, he’s likely ticketed for the G League. It’s unclear what the team’s plans are for Harrison, who has appeared in 175 career NBA games, but saw action in just two last season while on a pair of 10-day contracts with Brooklyn.

The Lakers have the maximum allowable 20 players under contract, including 12 on guaranteed deals and two on two-ways. Of the six other players with non-guaranteed salaries, Austin Reaves and Wenyen Gabriel are viewed as the frontrunners to make the regular season roster.

Lakers Officially Sign Javante McCoy, Fabian White Jr. To Exhibit 10 Deals

The Lakers have officially signed undrafted players Javante McCoy and Fabian White Jr. to Exhibit 10 contracts, the team announced on social media today (Twitter link). Both agreements were reported shortly after the draft last month.

McCoy, a 6’5″ guard, averaged an impressive 17.4 points per game for Boston University last season. He also shot a scorching 49.5% from the floor and 42.5% from three-point range.

White, a 6’8″ forward, played five seasons at Houston before declaring for the draft. He averaged 12.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last season, shooting 49% from the floor.

McCoy and White both played for the Lakers during the Las Vegas Summer League. So far, they are the only players Los Angeles has signed to Exhibit 10 deals. McCoy and White could compete for a spot in training camp or play for the team’s G League affiliate this season.

The Lakers have now filled 18 spots on their 20-man offseason roster.

Javante McCoy To Sign Exhibit 10 Deal With Lakers

Rookie free agent guard Javante McCoy will sign an Exhibit 10 contract with the Lakers after going undrafted, he tells freelance reporter Greg Levinsky (Twitter link).

McCoy spent all five years of his college career at Boston University, starting 138 of the 147 games he played for the program. In 2021/22, he averaged 17.4 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and 2.9 APG on .495/.425/.708 shooting in 34 contests (34.0 MPG).

An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed deal that doesn’t count against a team’s cap unless the player makes the regular season roster. It can be converted into a two-way deal and also makes a player eligible for a bonus worth up to $50K if he’s waived and then joins his team’s G League affiliate.

Undrafted Houston rookie Fabian White also reportedly agreed to an Exhibit 10 deal with the Lakers.

Pacific Notes: Murray, Lakers Workout, Kuminga, Moody, Warriors’ Pick

Jaden Ivey, the top rated point guard in the draft, hasn’t worked out for the Kings, who hold the fourth overall pick. It may be a moot point, as Sacramento’s brass is high on Iowa forward Keegan Murray, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. The Kings arranged for the prospect to have dinner with the team stars, De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, during his visit. Murray was one of top scorers in Division I last season at 23.5 PPG along with 8.7 RPG.

If he’s selected fourth overall, Murray could slot into the Kings’ frontcourt alongside Sabonis and Harrison Barnes.

The Lakers continued to do their homework despite not owning a draft pick, as they worked out six prospects on Monday, Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times tweets. That group included Javante McCoy (Boston University), Keve Aluma (Virginia Tech), Khalifa Diop (Gran Canaria), Jeenathan Williams (Buffalo), Malik Osborne (Florida State) and Danko Brankovic (Cibona).
Lottery picks Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody got the rare experience of playing on a championship team in their first year. Though they didn’t play large roles in the postseason, the Warriors rookies got invaluable experience as their playing time grows in future seasons, Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN writes. “I never really worry about whether we’re playing, not playing,” Kuminga said. “As long as I’m still here, learning, getting better every day. When my moments get called, I know I’ll be ready. … Everybody here [is] just helping me, way more than dudes [other rookies around the league] are, wherever they are right now.”
The Warriors hold the No. 28 pick but they might not add an rookie, according to Jeremy Woo of Sports Illustrated. The Warriors are looking to trade the pick, in part because of their huge payroll and also because they’ve already got a trio of young players — James Wiseman, Kuminga and Moody — fighting for rotation minutes next season.

Southeast Notes: Hornets, Workouts, Wizards, Russell, Magic

The Hornets hold three picks in the 2022 NBA draft (Nos. 13, 15, and 45) and are keeping busy in the weeks leading up to June 23, bringing in a handful of prospects on a daily basis for a closer look.

On Tuesday, the Hornets worked out Tyson Etienne (Wichita State), Jordan Goldwire (Oklahoma), John Meeks (College of Charleston), Orlando Robinson (Fresno State), D’Shawn Schwartz (George Mason), and Bryson Williams (Texas Tech), according to the team (Twitter link). All six of those players rank outside of the top 75 on ESPN’s big board, so they figure to receive consideration as possible second-round or UDFA targets.

On Wednesday, Hugo Besson (New Zealand Breakers), Khalifa Diop (Gran Canaria), Hyunjung Lee (Davidson), Javante McCoy (Boston University), Andrew Nembhard (Gonzaga), and Yannick Nzosa (Unicaja) make up the Hornets’ workout group (Twitter link). Several of those prospects are more highly regarded by draft experts — ESPN ranks Nembhard, Besson, and Diop 35th, 38th, and 39th respectively.

The Wizards‘ pre-draft workout on Wednesday will feature Kenny Baptiste (France), Garrison Brooks (Mississippi State), Kyle Foster (Howard), Justin Kier (Arizona), Aminu Mohammed (Georgetown), and Gabe Osabuohien (West Virginia), as Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington relays (via Twitter).
Murray State guard Tevin Brown was in Orlando on Tuesday, presumably to work out for the Magic, tweets Khobi Price of The Orlando Sentinel. The Murray State guard is the No. 74 on ESPN’s big board, so the Magic could consider him in the second round or as an undrafted free agent.
