Amico On Bobcats, Lakers, Wizards, Hawks
We're tracking most of today's draft rumors right here, but the latest column from Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio has a few too many tidbits and rumors to condense it to a single bullet point. Amico's piece has draft-related updates on the Lakers, Hawks, Wizards, and more, so let's round up all the pertinent info below….
Rockets Targeting Dwight Howard In Trade Talks
TUESDAY, 10:01am: While Howard is the Rockets' top trade target, the team could pursue Josh Smith or other big-name players if a deal can't be consummated with the Magic, tweets ESPN.com's Marc Stein.
MONDAY, 8:05am: Chad Ford and Marc Stein of ESPN.com reported last night that the Rockets have engaged in trade discussions with teams in the top 10 in the draft, including the Kings (No. 5) and the Raptors (No. 8). In their initial report, Ford and Stein suggested Andre Drummond had caught the Rockets' eye, and was the target in any deal. However, a rival GM told the ESPN scribes that he believes Houston's real goal is to land Dwight Howard.
Timberwolves Acquire Chase Budinger
The Timberwolves have sent the No. 18 pick in the draft to the Rockets in exchange for Chase Budinger, reports Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com (via Twitter). The Rockets also included the rights to Israeli forward Lior Eliyahu in the deal, tweets Adrian Wojnarwoski of Yahoo! Sports.
Bulls, Mavs, Pacers Interested In Brandon Roy
As Brandon Roy prepares to make an NBA comeback, rumors surrounding the former Trail Blazer have begun to heat up. Last week we heard that new Warriors GM Bob Myers would "absolutely" call Roy to express interest, and yesterday a report suggested that the Timberwolves were preparing a two-year offer for the 27-year-old. We can add at least three more potential suitors to the mix, as Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Bulls, Mavericks, and Pacers have serious interest in Roy.
Sixers, Wolves, Celtics Pursuing Jamal Crawford
Although Jamal Crawford was planning to opt out of his contract, he extended his decision deadline for his player option two weeks, until June 29th. This move allows the Trail Blazers to try to find a suitable trade partner for Crawford on or before draft night. If the Blazers find a destination Crawford likes, he could agree to exercise his player option and be dealt. And according to Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com, there's no lack of trade interest in Crawford. The Blazers are fielding offers from a number of teams, with the 76ers, Timberwolves, and Celtics among the most active suitors.
Odds & Ends: Howard, Walsh, Olympics
Cavs assistant general manager David Griffin has pulled his name out of consideration for the Clippers' general manager position, reports Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com. Griffin spoke with officials from the Clippers organization while in Chicago for pre-draft camp but reportedly doesn't feel like now is the right time to make a career move. The Clippers have only formally interviewed former Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe for the opening after Neil Olshey left Los Angeles to take the same position with the Trail Blazers. Here are a few more stories and headlines from around the league…
New York Notes: Lin, Woodson, Kidd
The Knicks and Nets have both been busy since their respective seasons came to a conclusion earlier this spring. For the Knicks, the team's attention has been focused on the future of Jeremy Lin while the Nets' energy has been spent on convincing Deron Williams to remain with the franchise. With the draft looming on Thursday and the start of free agency set to begin less than two weeks later, both New York and Brooklyn are in store for a working summer as the two teams look to reload for the fall. Let's check in on the latest news from Madison Square Garden and the Barclays Center…
Blazers Extend Qualifying Offer To Nicolas Batum
The Trail Blazers have extended a qualifying offer to forward Nicolas Batum, tweets Ben Golliver of Blazer's Edge. Batum will become a restricted free agent on July 1, but because of the qualifying offer, Portland will have the right of first refusal if another team attempts to sign the Frenchman. The qualifying offer comes in at approximately $4.4MM, but merely serves as a placeholder until the team reaches a deal with Batum on an extension or another team extends an offer sheet, at which time Portland would determine whether or not to match the deal.
Kings Extend Qualifying Offer To Thompson
June 25th: The Kings have officially extended a qualifying offer to Thompson, tweets Jones.
March 20th: The Kings will extend a qualifying offer to Jason Thompson at season's end, president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie tells Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee (via Twitter).
Thompson, the 12th overall pick in 2008, is eligible for restricted free agency this offseason. If and when the Kings officially extend him a qualifying offer, he'll have the option to accept the one-year contract ($4.13MM) and become an unrestricted agent in the summer of 2013. It's more likely he'll explore his options in restricted free agency, with the Kings having the opportunity to match any multiyear offer he receives.
Thompson's play was one reason Sacramento felt comfortable buying out J.J. Hickson, Jones adds. Playing in every one of the Kings' 45 games this season, the 25-year-old big man has averaged 8.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG, and has a .527 FG% in 24.3 MPG.
Timberwolves Set To Offer Roy Two-Year Deal
The Timberwolves are set to offer Brandon Roy a two-year contract, reports Darren Wolfson of 1500ESPN.com. The former Portland star sat out the 2011/12 season due to health concerns stemming from a lack of cartilage in his knees. After being amnestied by the Trail Blazers, Roy is free to sign with any team in the league. While many thought the former All-Star had permanently retired from the NBA, Roy has been training in Seattle in hopes of making a return for the 2012/13 season. The 27-year-old remains a health concern but has received an endorsement from Wolves assistant coach Bill Bayno, who has previously worked with Roy in Portland.
