Draft Updates: Monday
A number of the rumors we've already covered today involve the draft in some way, whether it's the Rockets looking to acquire top-10 picks to flip for Dwight Howard, or the Bulls' disinterest in trading Luol Deng for a package that includes the Warriors' No. 7 pick. But there are still so many draft-related odds and ends out there that we'll continue to publish daily Draft Updates posts this week, for the latest news on workouts and rumors about what teams are thinking. Here are today's items, with the newest additions added to the top of the page throughout the day….
- New Bobcats head coach Mike Dunlap thinks trading the team's No. 2 pick to strengthen its roster with multiple players makes sense, according to an Associated Press report (via ESPN.com).
- Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle says Rockets head coach Kevin McHale is pleased with the depth of talent available in the draft but would like to add another veteran to his current roster.
NBA Invites 14 Players To Draft Green Room
The NBA has invited 14 players to the 2012 NBA Draft Green Room, tweets Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com. The Green Room allows some of the draft's best prospects to sit with their agents and families just off the stage as they await to be selected by a team. Players are extended an opportunity to attend based upon how they are projected to be picked in the draft in order to avoid an awkward situation where a player finds himself sitting around deep into the first round. Notable omissions from the Green Room include UNC's Kendall Marshall and Ohio State's Jared Sullinger, who has seen his stock drop due to health concerns.
Paul: Bringing Back Billups Is “Top Priority”
Chris Paul will be entering the final year of his contract this summer, but it seems an extension isn't the first thing on his mind these days. Paul tells Christopher Dempsey of the Denver Post that his number one priority this offseason is making sure the Clippers are able to re-sign Chauncey Billups, who played just 20 games for the Clips before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in February.
Mutual Interest Between Ray Allen, Heat
4:09pm: Noting that the Heat and Knicks top Allen's offseason wishlist, Chris Mannix of SI.com says the Heat's interest in the sharpshooter is contingent on his willingness to accept a reserve role (Twitter links).
10:28am: The Heat's victory parade is underway in Miami, and while the front office is undoubtedly enjoying the celebration, it won't be long before the team starts making roster moves in preparation for the 2012/13 season. One potential target for the Heat this summer could be veteran shooting guard Ray Allen. According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com, there is mutual interest between the future Hall-of-Famer and the 2012 champs.
Front Office Notes: Magic, Pistons, Thunder, Spurs
As we noted earlier today, Magic general manager Rob Hennigan made his first hire, bringing aboard Pistons executive Scott Perry to replace Dave Twardzik as the team's assistant GM. Hennigan also parted ways with Adonal Foyle, which ESPN.com's John Hollinger suggests (via Twitter) is the clearest indication that Hennigan has total control in Orlando. The Magic were rumored to be grooming Foyle for the GM job down the road, but Hennigan appears to be clearing house and bringing his own people aboard. In Detroit, Oklahoma City, and San Antonio, changes are also afoot, so let's check out the details….
Neil Olshey Talks Workouts, Draft, Freeland
With the 2012 draft just three days away, Trail Blazers GM Neil Olshey spoke to Portland media today about his plans for Thursday, along with a few other topics. Among the tidbits Olshey dropped: The team has agreed to a new multiyear contract with salary cap guru Joe Cronin, whose old deal was set to expire this weekend (Twitter link via Joe Freeman of the Oregonian). Ben Golliver of Blazer's Edge provides a transcript of Olshey's comments, so let's dive in and pick out a few more key quotes….
Amick’s Latest: Rockets, Hawks, Bucks, Nets
SI.com's Sam Amick says he'd be surprised if there weren't a few trades finalized this week, particularly on draft night. Amick points to the Rockets, who own the 14th and 16th overall picks in the first round, as a prime candidate to be involved in draft-day deals, confirming ESPN.com's report that the Kings are among the teams talking to Houston. Amick shares a number of other draft-related updates, and one non-draft rumor via Sulia. Here are the highlights….
Odds & Ends: Hornets, Nash, Magic, Bucks
The good news keeps coming for the Hornets in what's been a very successful offseason so far. Not only are they set to draft Anthony Davis on Thursday, but they've cleared out their two biggest contracts, and now, according to Jimmy Smith of the New Orleans Times Picayune, they're set to announce a new TV deal. Smith reports that the Hornets' new deal will be on a cable network called Fox Sports New Orleans, and will pay the team roughly $10MM annually for the next ten years. It could be announced as soon as today, says Smith.
Here are a few more Monday afternoon odds and ends from around the NBA:
Expired Trade Exceptions: Bobcats, Blazers, Spurs
In an entry last week for Hoops Rumors' glossary, I broke down how the traded player exception works, noting that a certain kind of trade exception allow a team one year to spend it. If the team doesn't use the exception to acquire a player within a year, the exception simply expires.
Last June, a handful of teams acquired traded player exceptions in draft deals. Having not used them over the course of the year, the following clubs lost their trade exceptions over the weekend:
“No Chance” Bulls Trade Luol Deng To Warriors
While trade rumors continues to swirl around Luol Deng, it appears we can take one potential suitor out of the running. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports (via Twitter), the Bulls have told Deng there's "no chance" he'll be traded to the Warriors.
