The Mavericks may decide not to address their need at point guard through the draft, tweets Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. Fisher says the team has conducted “in-house talks” about making an offer to get Ricky Rubio from the Timberwolves.
Rubio, who still has two seasons and more than $29MM left on his contract, was recently the focus of trade talks involving the Knicks, who tried to obtain him before the February deadline. The 26-year-old averaged 11.1 points and 9.1 assists in 75 games this season.
Fisher doesn’t mention what the Mavericks might offer in return, but the move would point toward a strategy of trying to find veteran help for what could be Dirk Nowitzki‘s final season.
The Mavericks have also had discussions about drafting French point guard Frank Ntilikina, Fisher adds. The Knicks have expressed a strong interest in Ntilikina as well and are one pick in front of Dallas at No. 8.
Who could the Mavs even give up that would be worth it? I know they wouldn’t trade this years pick, but that’s about all I’d want from them.
This is a dump of Rubio. What value does he have? They’ve been trying to trade him for over 2 years.
I don’t think there’s a need to dump him though. He played so well after the break, and his season numbers would have been much better if he didn’t slump so bad to start the year. He’s never had a coach for more than one season. I think they should run it at least one more year. His contract is very reasonable.
He could be a long term option there with Barnes and Noel. Just draft Markkanen for when Dirk retires.

As a Mavs fan I think Rubio would be a good fit with the Mavs, he’s improving in mostly all categories and I think his scoring would increase. He’s been on below average teams his whole career, and though the Mavs right now aren’t a whole lot better I think he’d make the likes of Curry, Barnes, and Noel much better
I don’t think I’ve missed a Wolves game since Rubio came in the league. I don’t want him to get traded. He’s underrated, and gets hated on by national media because his scoring/shooting numbers are subpar. Yet, he’s good to great in almost every other category- besides pick & roll D. If he gets traded, I hope it’s to the Mavs. Carlisle would love him, along with Mavs fans.

Rubio is 26 and coming off a really good 2nd half. It’s not like he’s past his prime (will be 28 when his contract is up)
Getting Rubio doesn’t make them a playoff team. They need to worry about locking up Noel, who’s a FA first. Even if they get both, they aren’t a playoff team in the West, with Denver, Minnesota, Utah who have improved.
