JULY 30: The trade is official, according to a Knicks press release.
JULY 29: The Knicks will send the 19th pick to the Hornets in exchange for a future first-round selection, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Charlotte plans to draft Texas big man Kai Jones, Wojnarowski adds (Twitter link).
The Hornets were originally targeting Jones at No. 11 before Connecticut guard James Bouknight became available, states Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report (Twitter link). Sources tell Fischer that Jones is one of two prospects who came to Charlotte twice for pre-draft workouts.
The Hornets were searching for centers this offseason, and they’ve filled the position with a pair of trades. Earlier today, they picked up Mason Plumlee from the Pistons in an exchange of draft picks.
New York will receive a heavily protected first-rounder from Charlotte in 2022, tweets Zach Lowe of ESPN, who adds that the protections will decrease over the next three years. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the protections are 1-18 next year, 1-16 in 2023, 1-14 in 2024 and 1-14 in 2025. If not conveyed by then, the pick will become two future second-rounders (Twitter link).

ha, hope there’s some more details here because that return for the pick seems light.
Knicks are the biggest losers because they got nothing in return.
Knicks traded away picks like candy.
Wow what a dumb trade for the Knicks they trade a pick in the teens to a team that will be a playoff team in the East for years!!! Players love Lamelo
Really? Years? Good luck with that.
Save NY cap space and they will get about the same pick next year a second is probably included too.
They don’t need any more seconds. Tre Mann would have been the best fit for them, now it’s Jalen Johnson, or maybe Sharife Cooper. Good prospects left still, so they should have kept the pick, unless the pick they’re getting is unprotected.
Lol, Knicks will Knicks
there goes the loser philly fan… your a loser bro and so is your team.
Why. Scary Terry better be coming. A future pick, freakin please.
It could have been part of the negotiations, if LRose got some understandings somehow with regards to CHA’s FA PGs Graham & Rozier… I suspect LRose is worried about looking bad if/when he finally uses the capspace. Did he cover a future initiative with a Hornet…
Hornets are low key killing it
Moving up 20 spots in 2nd rd
Drafting Boukright and Jones
Don’t sleep on them next year
It was a great half day for Cha indeed –
Cap I might be reminding you of this post… if Al doesn’t lol!
There will be a lot comparing NYK and CHA in the standings next year because of the trade.
There’s a lot of assuming going on that CHA will get better. Plumlee was a good move, but draftees may take a few years, so the chances of the trade working out for NY is pretty good.
Hornets are not a lock. Knee jerk reactions already. That future 1st pick can also be traded. The knicks were gunning for specific guys all of which were off the board. Relax with the way to early predictions
Why dont draft J Johnson?? He was right there!! Come on, Rose
J Johnson so overrated bro, transition boy is lost in half-court game don’t have a jump shot… come on people wake the F… up
I like him a lot. Think he would develop like crazy under Thibs
Jalen J resembles Randle. Maybe Rose figured he would be duplication. I guess none of the choices past #17 Trey Murphy look automatic.
Charlotte getting Kai Jones and Bouknight probably think them similar to Lamelo, but I doubt it.
I think Spurs should trade 13 to Knicks for 19 and. 21, then draft Josh Primo at 19
Good. This is how a good FO manages assets. When you don’t like what’s on the board, don’t just take someone, trade the pick forward.
Starting tomorrow the future pick will have more trade value than the rights to any player they might have picked. That’s a simple fact.
Thank you. You don’t have to draft just to draft. Continue to collect assets.
How do you pass on a guy who can start next yr. I’m freaking lost right now. Don’t get it
And another trade. WTF
Who’s going to play next yr. we don’t even know our returns on trades.. Means FA is the way
Smart move by Knicks imo if guy you do not like there gives them a choice of taking Charlotte’s #19 next year or #17 in ’23 or a #15 in ’24 or ’25 or they could use it as a trade asset sometime in future and longer they keep it better the pick/asset becomes with pick position and possibility of a deep class sometime in next few years
The problem with that is that if Charlotte finishes better than 19 (ie, 20-30), Knicks get that pick. If they finish better than 17 in 2022, Knicks get that pick. Et cetera. So if the Hornets win the championship next year, Knicks get #30 in 2022. It’s seriously one of the worst trades I’ve ever seen. There’s only a very tiny chance the Knicks come out on top.
Yes, it’s comically awful, especially considering there were several good prospects still on the board. Shouldn’t have made the trade for anything other than top-10 protections.
