After predicting during ESPN’s draft broadcast on Thursday that Devin Booker and the Suns would come to an agreement on a contract extension this offseason, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reiterated that point in stronger terms during a Friday appearance on Get Up (YouTube link).
“We have big positive news potentially coming here for the Suns,” Windhorst said (hat tip to RealGM). “Devin Booker is in position to sign a two-year, $150MM extension. … He is expected to get that offer and to sign it.
“The Suns have some work to do on this roster, but Booker has been highly engaged with them this offseason on their coaching search and their Kevin Durant trade.”
While there was some speculation from outside the organization that the Suns might consider the idea of trading Booker this offseason, it doesn’t sound like that was an option the front office ever considered. The Suns stressed both publicly and privately that they planned to continue building around the four-time All-Star guard going forward.
As Windhorst notes, reporting at the time of Jordan Ott‘s hiring as Phoenix’s new head coach indicated that Booker was heavily involved in the process and gave the former Cavaliers assistant his stamp of approval.
Booker still has three years and $171MM left on his current super-max contract, but he’s eligible to sign another extension as of July 6, since it will have been three years since he finalized that previous deal. A new contract would begin at a projected $72MM in 2029/30, based on 10% annual cap increases, with an 8% raise to $77.8MM in ’30/31. It would cover his age-32 and age-33 seasons.
Asked about his contract situation in April, Booker didn’t explicitly state he would sign that extension if it were put on the table, but certainly suggested he’d welcome it. He told reporters it’s “nice to be up for an extension” and that it’s “always a pleasure” to be wanted for more years.
If Booker finalizes that two-year extension this offseason, it would set a new NBA record for the highest annual salary of any single contract, though the exact value would remain up in the air until the ’29/30 cap is officially set in four years.
I agree with what Steven A has said, mat ishbia is the worst owner in the league
The suns SHOULD be rebuilding now, the western conference has too many contenders and they would be able to regain so many assets they’ve traded away by letting booker compete for a championship somewhere else
I respect not wanting to rebuild, but you also can’t be delusional and deny reality
You cant really rebuild without having control of your own FRP
Not unless they trading everybody to whoever has control of their FRP
Skirk…So you don’t think they can get some quality FRP’s for Booker? That would be the start of a rebuild. Your comment makes no sense…
They cant. Youll be trading Booker to a team that will look to win with him, that team will not be in the bottom of the standings or in the lottery. Even if a third team gets involved, that team wont be giving up an unprotected FRP unless they are getting the best player in that trade.
This is also why Giannis is still a Buck, aside from Giannis not requesting for a trade, the Bucks dont control their 2026 FRP. No sense for them to blow it up and start a rebuild if they dont have control of their FRP. Imagine the Bucks bottoming out and maybe even winning the lottery, but since they dont have control of their FRP, theyll see ATL use that pick instead.
Exactly this ^^^
$75 AAV. Holy cow.
Basing these salaries off the cap is getting ridiculous now. I know players are getting paid because everyone wants to see the stars, but like at least make them play 82 games then. Book at least has been durable tho so it’s not about him just the trend.
Horrible decision.
I’d move on and rebuild like Oklahoma did and not pay him 327 million over the next 5 years. Get picks, sign short term pieces and BUILD A ROSTER.
What team with picks is demanding Booker. OKC got those picks because Kawhi wanted PG. No PG meant no Kawhi so Clips had to send picks and SGAto get it done. I don’t think there is a good fa in position to do that.
I was about to say Booker is digging his own grave but for 75 million a year they can call him king tut!
Who is going to want to pay a small guard in their age 33 season $77.8 million? That’s insanity. These billionaires cry poor about real investments in their community, but they are okay with throwing away this kind of money for 50 games of watching and old D-Book throw up a bunch of shots? How is any team supposed to even operate like that? Who’s going to be attending these NBA games in the future if the tickets keep rising? There has become a huge disconnect between billionaires and the average person and its only getting worse.
The Suns are Buried in the play in’s at best. What does he expect? They will mit get rid of the Beal contract.
He maxes out, they have no cap space, by the end of next year he is Frustrated and demands a trade – to a Team that will not win, too, because they cant pay enough Quality players.
Booker obviously does not prioterize winning or having his faith in his ohne hands.
Back in the days when Charley Rosen had a very outspoken column he would simply have called him a looser
2 years for 150. Wow. Booker is definitely playing for money, not rings. Come to New York for minimum. Haha
These max, supermax whatever else salaries are just ridiculous ….. everyone here gets just compensation, but with some salaries being a certain percentage (eg. 30, 35%) of an ever increasing annual cap, it makes team roster building, management that much harder.
It’s also creating this great imbalance in the league, making mid-tier salaried players rarer by the year. No need to look further, the SUNS last season with 3 high salaried max players and a whole bunch of those near or at the minimum salariy levels.
Hope that the next CBA, addresses, sanitize some of the insanity…. besides, Jaylen, CJ, etc already got theirs. Make it about the middle and lower tiered class for once.
(I’ve not even touched on the socio economic aspect of these max salaries … Would’ve made Bernie proud, lol)
I love internet GM’s like you would take a pay cut if your boss offered you more money so your company could put better workers around you lmfao…Take your 150 million book hopefully you shut the haters up with your play..
