The Sixers have signed first-round pick VJ Edgecombe and second-rounder Johni Broome, the team announced in a press release.
Edgecombe was the third overall selection after a spectacular season at Baylor, where he was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and earned second-team all-conference honors. He’s an explosive athlete with the potential to excel for Philadelphia at both ends of the court.
All first-round picks are eligible to receive up to 120% of the NBA’s rookie scale salary. If he gets the full amount, Edgecombe will make $11.1MM in his first season and $50.4MM over the four years of the contract.
Broome was SEC Player of the Year at Auburn and a finalist for the Wooden Award, which honors the top player in college basketball. He received a four-year deal with the first two seasons guaranteed and a team option on the final year, according to Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports (Twitter link). Broome was signed using the second-round exception.
The Sixers also signed Hunter Sallis to a two-way contract. The 22-year-old guard ranked fifth in the ACC in scoring this season at Wake Forest.
Sixers with the “A”-drat ….. finally some good news.
VJ has a chance to be special. He can take his time.
I like Broome. He can help them right away.
What would happen if Grimes refuses to take QO and no team makes him an offer?
I guess he would have to sit out. If he gets no offers from us or outside he would have to take it and enter next offseason as an unrestricted FA. If we are bidding against ourselves I would offer something like 3 years 39-42 mil with the 3rd year as a team option. I’m beginning to think this is as much as he will get. The new CBA does not appear to be friendly to guys who are not stars
He would not be able to sign with another NBA team, until the offer is in place. Not this year, next year or any time in the future. Restricted free agency is designed to keep players with their teams.
Yep, he has 3 legit options. He can find a team that is willing to pay what he wants 22-25 per year which looks unlikely and the sixers likely match anything 25 and below. He can bet on himself next year and accept the 8.7 QO and become an URFA next year. Or he could negotiate with us for the best possible deal. If we are bidding against ourselves I would start out offering 3 years 30-36 mil, but could go as high as 39-42, potentially even shooting for a 4th year team option. Not sure which decision is the best or most likely for him but I’m guessing the 2nd or 3rd options. Either way I expect him to be in a sixers uniform till the trade deadline regardless.
You are correct.
Grimes and Kuminga are in the same boat. Other teams don’t want to give them qualifying offers because they realize there’s no point in doing so – Philly and GS will match. Why would Brooklyn or any other team plan their summer, prepare their cap space to give qualifying offers to RFAs, only for those offers to be matched?
Taking a qualifying offer is a very risky venture. You take it if you plan to get more next summer, but you depend on your team to give you minutes and a role to make you attractive. Also, you risk injuries and other force majeure circumstances. And you are making a lot less money for that one year than you would under the contract. But players might do it if they are really confident in themselves, or if they really hate their teams (like Kuminga might hate Kerr and GS), so they want to take a QO and walk away in a year.
But, yes, my expectation is that Grimes and Kuminga will sign contracts with their teams. They will also be trade-eligible in winter if they do, and for full contract value.
He is signed to Sixers with QO. Only way he can leave. Is if someone offers him more money. Then Sixers can match or trade him. VJ makes him expendable. What they really need is PG. They should be trying for Schroder ……
I tried to put yall on VJ last summer when he was electric at the Olympic QT. This summer the international guard to watch is Omer Mayer from Israel. He’s going to Purdue next season & will def be a top10 pick in the next NBA draft. His Israeli squad is currently up 4 vs Dominican Republic (DR just went on a 13-0 run at the end of the half with Mayer mostly on the bench). Mayer is def the most talented Israeli basketball player I ever seen. Reminiscent of a smaller Luka, with some Ricky Rubio vibes sprinkled in.

Mayer struggled in the 1st half but came alive a bit in the 3rd with a couple treys & some nice floor play. Overall DR has sorta dominated since about halfway thru the 2nd. They’re down 2 going into the 4th tho bc they’re shooting 7-22 from the ft line. Lucas Morillo, 1 of the best HS players in NY has 15pts for DR. Omer Mayer has 13 for Israel
Oof DR miss 5 more fts to start the 4th, now 7-27 from the line
Sixers have quietly had a good off season. Nice to see after last year debacle
Happy for VJ. Sixers don’t deserve him but yea.
