Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show (YouTube link), Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s camp has remained in regular conversation with the Bucks regarding the superstar forward’s future and whether the team is capable of competing at the level he desires.
“Giannis and the Bucks have been having ongoing conversations about his future,” Charania said (hat tip to RealGM). “Even going back to May. Those conversations… every single passing week, every single passing month since May when I first reported he was exploring his best fits outside of Milwaukee, for really the first time. And really getting down to which team he would want to go to. Where he would want to be.
“Those conversations have only grown with every passing week and month since May. And recently, the Bucks and Giannis’ conversations have intensified in nature.”
Charania pointed out that Antetokounmpo uncharacteristically criticized the team’s “selfish” play following Wednesday’s blowout loss to Oklahoma City, which was missing several rotation regulars. It was the Bucks’ fourth loss in their past five games, and the past three defeats have all been lopsided.
“The frustration that Giannis Antetokounmpo has is at an all-time high,” Charania said. “He’s frustrated with the losing, he’s frustrated with the situation. And I will say this: I’ve spoken to about a dozen sources on and off for weeks now.
“The tension that is in the air within that organization, in that locker room is at an all-time high. There’s somewhat of a splintering environment that we’re seeing going on there.
“Because when a player of Giannis’ caliber maybe has a wandering eye, or maybe doesn’t know what his future holds there, and is having these intense conversations with the organization about what that looks like, there’s going to be such high levels and degrees of uncertainty within that organization.”
According to Charania, Milwaukee’s leadership met with Antetokounmpo in July and tried to pitch him on the idea that they had a roster worthy of contending for a championship, but the 31-year-old wasn’t convinced that was the case, leading to trade conversations with New York that reportedly never went anywhere.
The Bucks are currently 18-25, Charania notes, one-and-a-half games behind Atlanta for the No. 10 seed and the final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference. Antetokounmpo has missed 14 games this season due to injuries, with Milwaukee going just 3-11 in those contests. But even when he’s been healthy, the team is a mediocre 15-14. Obviously, none of those marks lend much credence to the notion that the Bucks are a contender.
Several teams have reportedly been hanging onto their top trade assets in the hopes that Antetokounmpo will end up on the trade block, but the Bucks star has said on the record that he never intends to request a trade out of Milwaukee and there has been no indication the front office would proactively look to move him.
Reports throughout the season have indicated that the Bucks are looking to buy, not sell, to upgrade the roster around Giannis. Still, many people around the NBA believe it’s only a matter of time until the two sides split, and with Milwaukee struggling to keep pace in the playoff race, it will be interesting whether the front office doubles down on that aggressive approach or reconsiders it during the next two weeks.

Giannis needs to stop being such a baby about wanting out. It’s the worst kept secret at this point. Every couple weeks we keep hearing he’s frustrated but doesn’t want to request a trade and how’s he committed to the team yet fast forward a couple weeks and it’s literally rinse and repeat. Just demand the trade we all know he wants and get it over with
Totally. I wonder how bucks fans feel. Longest breakup ever.
You’re wrong. Wisconsin fans had to sit through Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre’s nonsense. And frankly its Horst not wanting to be the guy who traded Giannis. The only way this gets any worse is if minority Bucks owner Aaron Rodgers introduces Giannis to ayahuasca. LOL.
Yeah he needs to cut the nonsense and put the trade request in the bag no one is buying it anymore
I’ll also say this: it’s not like the Bucks have been bad for long. He has one losing season and suddenly it’s time to bolt. Many players have gone through much worse yet never demanded a trade or reached this level of exasperation.
I’m not criticizing Giannis for wanting to leave, and certainly the franchise’s future outlook isn’t super promising, but it’s frustrating when people paint him as some sort of saint for the sole reason that he’s on a small market team and has stuck with them for a long time.
We’ve seen Giannis be inconsiderate before, like knocking over ladders or refusing to go home after a game, thereby forcing the people who work there to stay late. And we’ve seen him manage his words very careful in the media. In other words, he’s human and a has a lot more in common with the other superstars than one may think. That’s fine, but let’s not pretend like he’s something he’s not, nor that all this smoke is complete fabrication (which some on this board have been extremely adamant about to the point of defensiveness).
You go play in Milwaukee and watch LA and NY get what they want all the time.
@Pogo
Exactly what has NY gotten in the last 50 years?
He’s talking about players wanting to go there to play & don’t act like that isn’t true lol
They get splash FA. Players sign there just cause it’s NY or LA. Not sure why. Milwaukee is a fine town. But if you want sponsors on top of your contracts you sign in the big markets
But then posters on here won’t be able to call me names for CORRECTLY PREDICTING this whole scenario. It started further back, but the Myles Turner and Kyle Kuzma acquisitions proved my take to be sound. And anyone who got mad about me saying Giannis to GSW should be banned for how they treated me, they broke TOS every single time.
He’s a selfish ass
Haliburton burner account?
Bucks receive: Lauri Markannen, Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, picks
Heat receive: Giannis, Buddy Hield, De’Anthony Melton
Nets receive: Terry Rozier, Jonathan Kuminga, picks
Warriors receive: Michael Porter Jr
Jazz receive: Andrew Wiggins, Ziaire Williams, Nikola Jovic, Brandon Podziemski
The Jazz get the leftovers for their franchise player?
@Chuck
They would definitely get a bunch of picks on top of younger high upside guys like Jovic and Podziemski in this scenario.
warriors gets eworse of teh deal. Might as well have the warriors send out curry too
Warriors have no leverage in the Kuminga scenario. Buddy Hield is a negative value contract. They’re giving up the upside in Podziemski and a good bench player in Melton for MPJ who can keep them competitive right now.
I disagree MPJ doesn’t make them better if you are giving up Podz and Meltion. Both are needed to stay competive. they would get worse. Better to make no trade at all if you are giving up 2 of your bench players for a guy who is the third best player.
Melton + Podz average
PPG: 11.8
APG: 2.7
RPG: 3.6
MPJ average
PPG: 25.3
APG: 3.2
RPG: 7.4
He makes them better instantly. Especially since the team we are talking is now Jimmy-less. He’s the #2 scorer and can create shots/ run an offense through himself when Steph isn’t on the court.
Not if podz and Melton leaves. Who is the ball handler on the team now? You just traded away their 2 best ball handlers. Now you have none. Curry is not a ball handler. Podz is one of their best rebounders. MPJ is a not a 2 way player. Melton been averaging over 16 a game lately. You need to look at the entire game and positions not just scoring. Its a bad trade for the warriors. Rather trade Green and Kuminga for MPJ
Except curry has been the best ball handler in the league for years now. Maybe not the best passer, but you won’t find better with the ball in their hands.
“Curry is not a ball handler.”
Laughable take, you completely do not understand why Steph moving to offball worked so well with Draymond there. If no Draymond, Steph is known as an iconic point guard ball handler. His skills are elite, you are smoking something if you think Steph Curry cannot actually play point guard. He did just fine in the Jackson era.
“Podz is one of their best rebounders.”
No he’s not, he doesn’t get rebounds by going bodies, he is too small, he grabs deflection rebounds, which is a lot of luck more than anything.
MJP can take the scoring load off of Curry in a way Pod still never do.
Lakers get Giannis. Bucks get the honor of giving the Lakers Giannis.
Sounds like everyone wins…. except the Mets and the Jazz who get trash for their best player. They’re better be multiple unprotected picks going to them to make that work.
So he doesn’t think any of the losing is due to him?
They’re 15-14 with him, and 3-11 without him and he’s by far their best player and one of the best players in the world.
So no, he probably doesn’t think that.
Lol, it’s not. They have no wings and their guards are about average. They’re 2 good, not even great, players from contending next year in the east.
Exactly, the team was built by the Bucks FO to lose and cause Giannis to ask for a trade. I have been saying this for MONTHS if not YEARS at this point.
The losing is due to Doc Rivers, or at least a solid portion of the losing. Fire him.
I’m starting to think Doc Rivers could get charged with double murder and still keep his job in Milwaukee.
It baffles me that he has a job lol
Oh, he will get fired. BUT sign a lucrative 5yr, $80mil contract within a month. Lol.
Steve Kerr right behind him. Doc and Steve are literally the top 2 worst coaches in the league who should never be hired by anyone ever again. We need younger coaches in the NBA, not these “lifetime job” dudes who are majorly washed up.
I for real have no idea why doc keeps getting jobs lol
Shams stirring up the pot again.
Yeah, excuse me if I don’t pay attention to a klutch mouth piece.
I mean he’s just saying what everybody thought after Giannis’ comments the other day. The Bucks aren’t going to move Giannis unless he explicitly tells them he’s not going to resign and Giannis doesn’t want to risk being labeled a villain by asking for a trade. Sometimes you need a 3rd party to get the wheels in motion.
It doesn’t matter what Giannis says anymore… the media has trained people to believe it’s something no matter what. Even when he does say something it gets twisted into the same idea. Kinda numb to the whole thing now.
I doubt it’s coming from Giannis or his agents. It’s not in Giannis’ interest (in terms of reputation or in having a say in selecting his next team) to try to force a deal out of MIL in-season. Just ain’t. This “news” is probably coming from the team. Perhaps they see a trade (eventually) as inevitable, and believe doing it now vs the off sesaon is preferrable for them.
Interesting line in, could def be true
My view is G does want to shoehorn his next location (Big market+contender) but those teams don’t have the assets till the summer to make it happen
This extra circular bs now could be attributed to him trying to soften the blow later, tho doing nothing and everyone getting a text alert in July while sitting by a pool would have been just fine by all and saved him a lot of energy
I agree with that. He has the best of both worlds right now if he holds on until the summer. He doesn’t have to demand a trade (just not sign an extension), and so he can technically stay compliant with his stated principles. With an expiring deal going into 2026-27, few teams will do what TOR did with Kwahi, so MIL and he will have to involve him in all their trade negotiations. With that, why open his mouth again (or let his agents open theirs). MIL on the other hand …. ??
He won’t man up and demand a trade, so he enjoys losing.
Kuzma, Porter Jr, Rollins, Prince, Coffey and some 1sts and 2nds for a all star PG and SG starters ages from 28-30.
Sign Thon Maker, Robin Lopez, Jabari Parker and Kotas Antek…..
Couldn’t tell at all.
This unfortunately needs to come to an end. We’ve let him dictate too many moves, whether it be on the coaching side or player side. I can understand some input, but management is there for a reason. TO MANAGE THE TEAM! We need a total rebuild. We have limited draft capital, Dames spread-out contract, Turner’s large salary. It’s been a fun 13 years, and I’m grateful for the title and ride we’ve been on, but I’m over it.
The Bucks will have a 1st rounder and cap space this offseason. They’ll be fine. Giannis will stay 3-4 more years.
& it’s peckerwood hack sports writers drumming up fake news. If the Bucks trade Giannis you’re looking at 6 or 7 first rounders including somehow getting a couple of their own back, plus someone from this past draft. They only trade that makes any sense today is Dylan Harper from San Antonio and assets to Portland for Bucks picks back.
You should look up what ‘peckerwood’ means, because if you’re applying it to Shams, you don’t know.
6 7 nice
I need someone that wants me as much as Shams wants Giannis to leave Milwaukee
If bucks trade Giannis they might as well go in all out rebuild trading away everyone for young players. they do not have a young team so might as well start the sell off now.
Dont worry Bucks, trade him to, say, NY or any big market and you’ll pick first in next draft (wink wink)
Now that would take some real rigging. Their pick is swapped with Nola, so if bucks win the lottery then Nola (then ATL) gets #1. If G goes to NY and somehow mil picks 1st despite that, then I will finally believe the draft is rigged.
It wouldn’t happen this year. It would be next year, or the next time there is a “generational” prospect like Flagg or Zion.
The last resort Milwaukee has, if Gianni’s doesn’t demand for a trade, would be adding:
Jerami Grant
DeJounte Murray
Two players that can help and would elevate the teams potential. Add talent and playoff experience. DeJounte former all star, and Grant Olympic gold medalist. More star/borderline star power.
Pick up the necessary role players to complement, and that team at least can be more intriguing for a last playoff push
If it doesn’t work, trade Giannis in the summer.
MIl needs to get ATL, NO and Portland in on this trade action or they’ll just be bad without their own picks
At this point the bucks would be better off trading him.
They’d aren’t winning with him, he’s only doing to get older and want out even more. They’ve clearly struggled to build around him ever since Dame went down injured. Their core isn’t as bad as what it was this time a year ago.
Looks like the Knicks are more motivated than ever to make a deal and get better. Their core isn’t pelicans are still in their weird limbo of being bad yet have some really good pieces. You’d have to say the Spurs and OKC are likely off the table as they have really solid established young cores.
I’d be thinking Bridges, OG and a couple firsts could possible be the best deal.
I’d be enquiring in on Paolo Banchero over in Orlando, they could be willing to make a deal and he could be the new face of the franchise.
Maybe Miami would send you Herro, Jovic and Ware ?
Stills definitely not too late to try tank out the rest of the season and aim for a top 4 pick. You’re currently positioned for the 8th overall pick, could easily get down to 6th overall where the Jazz sit as they are only 3 games back.
Except that they don’t control their own FRP for 2026 … or the next two after that.
No one said they need a full scale rebuild.
Like I said that Knicks package could be Bridges, OG and 2 firsts
Rollins Bridges Kuzma OG Turner
Plus they have their draft pick this year likely 3-10 range.
Or like I said I’d try go after Paolo if he’s available. Probably get a big back like Goga which would be good depth
Rollins Green Kuzma Paolo Turner
They have the less favorable of their ow pick and Pelicans pick. The Pelicans are bad, so you might end up being right that they will have their own pick, but technically they don’t have rights to it.
I love the idea of Paolo and Goga being a part of the return, fwiw. A more balanced well-rounded team.
Send him to Charlotte for Kon, Moussa, Sexton, Miller, and a couple firsts. Or Bridges instead of Miller and tack on more picks. Bridges would make more sense. Him and KPJ would mesh well…
There are maybe a handful of players that would turn the Bucks into real contenders. None of them are getting traded this year, and even if they were, the Bucks wouldn’t have the assets to trade for them.
If the Bucks just want to compete for a playoffs, then sure, adding someone like Zach LaVine probably helps those odds. But a player of that caliber isn’t pushing them over the top into contention. Ditto for Morant, MPJ, Jerami Grant, etc. Adding two of those guys would move the needle a bit more, but the Bucks don’t have the assets for that either.
A Giannis trade is best for the franchise and team. Should have been done at the draft. Now at the TD it’s probably a lesser haul. No reason for him to stay in Milwaukee. Time for Bucks to blow it up. Trade Kuz, Turner, Portis, Prince all while they still have value. This is a deep lottery draft.
The problem for the Bucks is their location… find me an NBA talent with no connections to Wisconsin that wants to go play in -10 degree weather in the middle of nowhere as a 20-35 year old professional athlete. It’s been a problem forever (ask Jabbar and Oscar Robertson) …
That being said… there is an All-Star NBA player FROM WISCONSIN that they could get in a Giannis deal to build around or with… Tyler Herro. He’s 5 years from his prime still.. he’s a 25-5-5 talent… AND HE’S FROM WISCONSIN lol…. you’re not talking top tier free agents into signing with Milwaukee unless its a strong over pay… the only way they can get talent is to trade for it, or find locals with with loyalty to the area.
Miami would be thrilled to package Herro with other pieces (probably Ware or Larson, Roziers expiring contract, and draft picks) .. and it would give the Bucks a player to market, build around… and hopefully succeed with….
Negative on this? Herro is hurt.. a lot. I have no idea why. But when he’s on the court, he’s either the best, or one of the best players in that game… against any team in the NBA.
Podz, Kon, and Jalen Johnson are all from Wisconsin, too. Maybe a five-team trade with Heat, Warriors, Hornets, and Hawks?
only herro is making enough to make logical sense
This is a four-team trade involving the 76ers, Bucks, Warriors, and Thunder.
Philadelphia 76ers receive:
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Nikola Topić
Milwaukee Bucks receive:
Draymond Green
Jonathan Kuminga
Luguentz Dort
Al Horford
Jared McCain
Golden State Warriors receive:
Joel Embiid
Oklahoma City Thunder receive:
Myles Turner
Trade works money wise
Perhaps picks gets involved
Who says yes and no?
Embiid is damaged goods, Warriors want Trey Murphy III or younger stars.
