Raptors Sign Armoni Brooks To Second 10-Day Deal
6:32pm: Brooks has signed his contract, tweets Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports.
12:46pm: The Raptors will bring back guard Armoni Brooks on a second 10-day contract, reports Blake Murphy of Sportsnet.ca (Twitter link). Brooks’ first 10-day deal with the team ran through Tuesday before expiring overnight.
Brooks, 23, appeared in four games during his first 10 days with Toronto, averaging 8.3 minutes per contest. His impact was limited — he scored just three points on 1-of-6 shooting with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 33 total minutes.
Still, the Raptors apparently liked what they saw enough to commit to Brooks for at least 10 more days. Once Brooks’ second 10-day deal expires, the team will have to either sign him for the rest of the season or let him walk, since players can’t sign more than two standard 10-day contracts with the same club in a single season.
A former Rocket who was waived by Houston in February, Brooks will once again occupy the 15th spot on Toronto’s standard roster, so no corresponding roster move or hardship exception is necessary to complete the signing. He’ll earn $85,578 on the deal.
Assuming the Raptors re-sign Brooks prior to Wednesday’s game vs. the Clippers, his new contract will run through March 25, covering the club’s next five games.
Spurs’ Doug McDermott Out For Rest Of Season
Spurs forward Doug McDermott will miss the remainder of the season because of a Grade 3 ankle sprain, tweets Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News.
McDermott left Saturday’s game against the Pacers after rolling the ankle in the first quarter. He was ruled out for Monday’s game before the team decided to have him sit out the rest of the season.
McDermott moved into the starting lineup after coming to San Antonio in a sign-and-trade deal with Indiana last summer. He played in 51 games, missing significant time while in the health and safety protocols, and averaged 11.3 points per night while shooting 42.2% from three-point range.
The 30-year-old will earn $13.75MM in each of the next two seasons and will become a free agent in 2024.
Ben Simmons Has An Irritated Disc In His Spine, Receives Epidural
Ben Simmons is suffering from an irritation of the L-4 disc in his lower spine, according to Ramona Shelburne and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. It doesn’t appear he’ll be back any time soon, but Nets officials are hoping he can play a “couple” of games before the regular season ends.
Simmons received an epidural treatment for back pain while the team was in Orlando this week, according to Nick Friedell of ESPN (Twitter link). Doctors hope the injection will help ease the discomfort and speed up his return to the court.
Coach Steve Nash added that there’s still no timeline for Simmons to begin practicing, as the team has to see how he responds to the epidural. Nash said he remains hopeful that Simmons will be available before the playoffs start (Twitter link).
After acquiring him from the Sixers last month, the Nets originally set Friday’s game against the Trail Blazers as a target date for Simmons’ debut, sources tell Shelburne and Wojnarowski. However, that became unrealistic because he couldn’t get through more than a day or two of rehab without pain affecting his lower back.
Simmons continues to get treatment and is working to strengthen the affected area, the authors add. He has done some basketball activities in a 1-on-0 setting, but nothing more.
Nash admitted over the weekend that Simmons still isn’t ready for 1-on-1 games and has a long way to go before progressing to a 5-on-5 setting. The Nets have 13 games left in the season and at 36-33 are trying to climb into sixth place to avoid the play-in tournament.
Knicks Expected To Retain Tom Thibodeau
Tom Thibodeau is expected to remain the Knicks’ head coach beyond this season, Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer reports.
There has been rampant speculation regarding Thibodeau’s status during the team’s disappointing season.
There’s been some internal support to move on from Thibodeau and owner James Dolan had granted the front office permission to decide whether he remains the head coach, according to Fischer’s sources.
However, president of basketball operations Leon Rose has no plans to make a change — Fischer notes that Rose and Thibodeau been trusted allies since the hiring process in 2020. The Knicks interviewed 11 candidates before picking the former Bulls and Timberwolves head coach.
Thibodeau has three years left on his five-year contract.
Reports surfaced last month that Knicks exec William Wesley blamed the team’s ills on the head coach. However, Thibodeau has maintained a good relationship with Dolan, speaking with the owner following each game and often visiting the owner’s box.
While Rose is reclusive, rarely speaking to the media, Thibodeau has emerged as the team’s official spokesperson. That has helped his cause, Fischer adds.
There’s also no obvious veteran choice in the market to replace Thibodeau and the front office isn’t convinced associate head coach Johnnie Bryant would be a better option. Another current assistant, Kenny Payne, is a candidate to leave New York for Louisville’s head coaching job.
Jamal Murray To Practice With Grand Rapids Gold
The Nuggets have assigned injured guard Jamal Murray to their NBAGL affiliate club, the Grand Rapids Gold, to practice with the team, per Harrison Wind of DNVR Sports (Twitter link).
The odds of Murray playing at all this season had been considered tenuous recently, so any movement on this front has to be encouraging news for Nuggets fans. He is expected to return to Denver following Grand Rapids’ practice on Saturday.
Wind adds (via Twitter) that the Nuggets will assess Murray following his workouts with the team’s G League affiliate and decide how to move forward with the 6’3″ vet’s recovery timeline after that. According to Wind, Denver’s other injured star, small forward Michael Porter Jr., has yet to join the Gold for a workout.
Murray was enjoying a breakout season during 2020/21 prior to his ACL tear, notching a career-best 21.2 PPG on .477/.408/.869 shooting, plus 4.8 APG, 4.0 RPG and 1.3 SPG through 48 games.
With Murray and Porter shelved, reigning 2021 MVP Nikola Jokic has shouldered a massive burden this season for Denver. The Nuggets have remained very competitive with their All-NBA center at the helm, sporting a 41-28 record as the West’s sixth seed as of this writing. The team is just 1.5 games behind the Jazz for the fourth seed and home court advantage in the first round of the forthcoming playoffs. The additions of Murray and Porter this season, should they at least somewhat resemble their pre-injury selves, could help Denver become a legitimate contender this year.
NBA Confirms Dates For 2022 Draft, Lottery, Combine
The NBA has officially confirmed the dates and locations for its three primary draft-related events in 2022. Those events are as follows:
- Draft Combine: Monday, May 16 – Sunday, May 22 in Chicago.
- Draft Lottery: Tuesday, May 17 in Chicago.
- 2022 NBA Draft: Thursday, June 23 in Brooklyn (Barclays Center).
Those dates had already been penciled in on the NBA’s tentative offseason calendar, but given how unpredictable the last couple offseasons have been due to COVID-19, it’s good to have them locked in.
It’s also worth noting that all three events will be held fully in person this year. The draft, lottery, and combine were virtual in 2020, and the 2021 lottery also took place virtually.

Magic’s Bol Bol Out For Remainder Of Season
Bol Bol, who was acquired from the Celtics at the trade deadline, won’t play for the Magic this season, writes Khobi Price of The Orlando Sentinel.
President of basketball operations Jeff Weltman made the announcement Tuesday morning regarding Bol, who underwent foot surgery in January. He played just 14 games this season, all with the Nuggets before being dealt to Boston, and averaged 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 5.8 minutes per night.
“Bol’s working very hard,” Weltman said. “He’s working diligently. He’s working every day. He continues to ramp up. He’s just doing individual work right now. We’re going to be careful with him as we are with everyone to make sure he doesn’t skip steps in his rehabilitation.”
Bol, 22, was an intriguing gamble when he was selected with the 44th pick in the 2019 draft. At 7’2″ and 220 pounds, he has offensive skills that are uncommon in a big man, but his wiry frame makes it tough for him to fit into a natural position.
He spent two and a half seasons in Denver, but only appeared in 53 total games and played an average of 6.2 minutes per night.
Bol will be a free agent this summer, and the Magic can make him restricted by submitting a $2.7MM qualifying offer.
CJ McCollum Cleared To Return For Pelicans
Veteran guard CJ McCollum has exited the NBA’s COVID-19 protocols and will be available to play for the Pelicans on Tuesday vs. Phoenix, the team announced today (via Twitter).
McCollum entered the NBA’s health and safety protocols last Thursday and missed New Orleans’ games against Charlotte on Friday and Houston on Sunday.
The Pelicans split those games and remain well positioned to qualify for the play-in tournament in the Western Conference. At 28-40, they’re the No. 10 seed, one game behind the No. 9 Lakers (29-39) and 1.5 games up on the No. 11 Trail Blazers (26-41).
Devonte’ Graham entered the Pelicans’ starting lineup during McCollum’s two-game absence, but figures to return to the second unit on Tuesday. Graham and Jose Alvarado will likely play reduced roles after seeing a bump in minutes with McCollum out.
Magic’s Jonathan Isaac To Miss Rest Of Season
Magic forward Jonathan Isaac won’t make his long-awaited return from a torn ACL this season after all, according to Khobi Price of The Orlando Sentinel, who reports Isaac will miss the rest of 2021/22. The team has formally confirmed the news.
Isaac, who suffered a major left knee injury during the first half of the 2019/20 season, returned in the Walt Disney World bubble that year and tore his left ACL in early August. He missed the entire ’20/21 season while recovering from the injury and will now miss all of ’21/22 as well.
Even for an injury as significant as an ACL tear, it’s an unusually long recovery process for Isaac, who has been out for over 19 months and will go more than two full years between game action if he returns for the start of next season. For comparison’s sake, Magic point guard Markelle Fultz tore his ACL in January 2021 and has been back on the court for the team since last month.
Still, players who return in about a year from torn ACLs often take a while to recapture their old form. With the Magic very much in the midst of a rebuilding process and holding an 18-51 record that places them last in the Eastern Conference, it makes sense that there would be no real urgency to get Isaac back on the court until he feels 100%.
According to Price, the 24-year-old still hadn’t progressed to full-contact drills as of late last week, so he was running out of time to go through a ramp-up process before the regular season ends on April 10.
“First and foremost, the care of our players will always be our top priority,” Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in a statement. “We have to remember that Jonathan has missed essentially two years. While it continues to be a day-to-day process for him as he continues to strengthen and condition all aspects of his body, we feel we have reached a point where it would be prudent to say that he will not play this season.
“I understand this can be frustrating to our fans, but Jonathan has worked extremely hard and he is eager to return to game action, which is why we must continue to manage his rehabilitation with the big picture in mind. Quite frankly, we are just out of time to ramp him up to play in games this season.”
Prior to his injury, Isaac was one of the NBA’s most talented, versatile defenders, having averaged 2.3 blocks and 1.6 steals per game in 34 appearances in 2019/20. He was also in the process of expanding his offensive game, putting up 11.9 PPG on .470/.340/.779 shooting in ’19/20 before tearing his ACL.
Isaac is under contract for three years beyond this season, at a rate of $17.4MM annually.
Tyreke Evans To Sign G League Deal, Likely To Join Bucks’ Affiliate
Tyreke Evans will sign a G League contract and is expected to join the Bucks’ affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets. He’ll be evaluated during his G League experience for a potential contract with the Bucks, Charania adds.
Evans has worked out for Milwaukee and Golden State this month.
As demonstrated in our current roster counts for all NBA teams, Milwaukee has an open roster spot. Evans could provide more depth at the wing position if the Bucks like what they see from Evans over the coming weeks.
Evans, the 2010 Rookie of the Year, boasts a decade of league experience from 2009-19. Last month, he was reinstated into the NBA after being suspended by the league since 2019 for violating its drug policy. The 32-year-old guard has not played elsewhere since his ban.
Over the course of his NBA career thus far, Evans has suited up for the Kings, Pelicans, Grizzlies and most recently the Pacers. In 594 games, the 6’6″ vet out of Memphis holds averages of 15.7 PPG, 4.8 APG, 4.6 RPG and 1.2 SPG on .440/.323/.757 shooting splits. During his lone season in Indiana, he saw his role reduced. In just 20.3 MPG, Evans averaged 10.2 PPG on 38.9% shooting from the field.
