The Sixers will not extend Quentin Grimes‘ October 1 qualifying offer deadline, sources tell Jake Fischer of The Stein Line (all Twitter links). Philadelphia made the 6’5″ wing a restricted free agent when it tendered him a qualifying offer in June.
Gina Mizell of The Philadelphia Inquirer first reported that Grimes’ agent, David Bauman, had asked the 76ers to extend the QO deadline, which requires the consent of both the player and the team. Fischer confirmed the news on Saturday and specified that Bauman was looking to push back the deadline one week, to Oct. 8.
Fischer’s latest update doesn’t come as a surprise, since he previously said Philadelphia hadn’t shown any interest in granting Bauman’s request.
According to Fischer, the Sixers and Grimes’ camp remain “far apart” in contract negotiations. As multiple reporters have indicated, Grimes appears headed toward re-signing with Philadelphia on a one-year deal — the only question is whether he accepts his $8.74MM QO, which comes with an implied no-trade clause, or signs a more lucrative one-year contract and waives his right to veto a trade.
Either way, we now have confirmation that Grimes’ situation should be resolved by Wednesday.
Wow. What a cheap and malfunctional organization.
…Because they don’t want to drag it out another 3 months?
No, because they are delusional and have no idea what they are doing, basketball-wise. See the last 2 decades.
Btw, how would extending the QO deadline drag anything on for 3 months?? That doesn’t make sense.
They’ve had July through September to get a deal done. That’s three months.
Why should they get more time when negotiations have such a large gap?
An extension only benefits Grimes (hoping injuries, like the one to McCain, lead to more leverage). It doesn’t benefit the Sixers.
Grimes lost his leverage the moment the Sixers drafted Edgecombe. They want Grimes to be the 5th option, not a 20-point scorer.
If Grimes wants to get paid commensurate with a large offensive role, he can leave in Free Agency and do what Jerami Grant did when he signed a massive deal with the Pistons to win 20 games per year. Grant has made 116 million over the last 5 years and hasn’t made the playoffs since.
They aren’t extending it because they aren’t close and want him in training camp. Thats called common sense. They aren’t giving him 20 plus mil a year. They’re actually being smart for once.
I mean October 1st is lot of time to decide.
Its not time to help him decide, it’s time so they can extend negotiations.
I’m fine with declining an extended date. I like Grimes but I would put 3 offers on the table and let him choose…one way or the other he is playing in Philly for part or all of the year…I don’t see a sign and trade that works for us due to the CBA.
1 accept the QO (1 year no trade)
2 1 year 12-15 mil (Grimes waives his no trade)
3 3 year 42 mil (3rd year team option)
That’s as high as I can go for him
I agree. I like him for the sixers but they have depth at his position and I don’t want another Tobias harris
Sixers are fools to not pay Grimes. He can easily be traded. And they need him till McCain and VJ are ready. The Process ..
Multiple teams did not want him and moved him and because he had 25 solid games where he got to shoot the ball 25 times a game and lost almost every game, you’d give the 4 years and 80 million he is asking for? Thats how the sixers got into this mess is overpaying everyone
How much would you pay him
Paying Grimes means you take full control and he can be moved. Paying Embiid and PG13 means the complete opposite.
Restricted free agency is a mother______.
Not sure what the higher 1 year offer salary is, but Grimes should definitely consider it if it’s strictly a 1 year deal (no team option) and the amount is at least 16 mm. That’s well over his career earnings to date, and provides a decent NB starting point for his next contract with any team he’s traded to. Otherwise, just take the Q/O, and go back to work.
