Sam Presti Dismisses Jackson/Van Gundy Rumors
On Friday, we provided an update on the latest rumblings in the Scott Brooks extension talks, in which apparently the Thunder and Brooks remain far apart. Within that post we heard from Marc Stein that should those talks reach an impasse, two names that have surfaced as back up plans are Phil Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy.
Earlier today, we heard that Oklahoma City GM Sam Presti addressed their draft position and luxury tax situation. According to Royce King from Daily Thunder, Presti also dismissed the Jackson/Van Gundy rumors pretty adamantly when he talked to the media. Presti insisted that settling Brooks' contract situation was at the top of the Thunder's offseason checklist:
Hoops Rumors Mock Draft 1.0
As you've probably noticed, Hoops Rumors has been providing detailed and increasingly more frequent draft updates over the past few weeks, which can all be seen here. With June 28th just a week and a half away, we wanted to throw our hat into the draft ring by producing our own mock.
Below is the first version of that mock draft, which has been constructed using a combination of what we're hearing and what we consider to be a given team's needs. Each name is linked to that player's Prospect Profile entry. Obviously additional workouts and the potential for trades make this an evolving projection, so be sure to check back the week of the draft for an updated version. For now, each pick is based on the assumption that the team will not trade their selection and will draft accordingly.
Jason Terry Wants Long-Term Deal In Dallas
Speculation has run wild for months with regard to the strategy that the Dallas Mavericks will employ to return to a championship caliber club. One player who doesn't sound all that interested in getting caught up in the rumors is Mavericks guard Jason Terry. If the Mavericks try to do anything but retain him via a multi-year offer, Terry sees himself somewhere else, writes Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News.
“It’s a tough situation. I’m finally in a position where I can kind of predict my own future, so to speak. I want to stay here in Dallas. That’s always been my goal. But it needs to be long-term. If they’re not ready to step up and do that, then I’ll have to make my home elsewhere,” Terry said.
Prospect Profile: John Jenkins
Vanderbilt's John Jenkins is a hot name with teams picking in the latter part of the first round and with good reason. He can really shoot. Jenkins played three years at Vanderbilt and shot over 40 percent from three in every one of them. His jumper is by far his best feature as a player, so expect playoff teams that could use a sniper off the bench to have interest.
Equally important at the next level will be Jenkins ability to utilize his lethal range in a variety of fashions. He has an extremely quick release and showed he could shoot off screens and off the dribble in college. Jenkins' form is picturesque and he has mastered squaring up on his release, making his jumper effective in most in-game situations.
Draft Updates: Sunday
We've already heard today from Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer about the Bobcats' draft history and how important it is to capitalize on top five picks when you have them. In an Odds & Ends post, the Pistons and Hawks draft prospects were also discussed. As tonight's start time for Game 3 of the NBA Finals approaches, we will keep all draft-related links in this post, with the latest news on top.
- Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com examines the possibility of Austin Rivers being drafted by the Celtics and playing for his father. While he deems the chances remote, it sounds like something both parties would be up for.
Odds & Ends: Iguodala, Sixers, Jennings, Spurs
All indications from Philadelphia are that they want to shake things up this offseason. We already know Rod Thorn is more or less out and that Lou Williams has opted out. In his chat today, ESPN's Chad Ford said that he is again hearing Andre Iguodala is being shopped. Ford mentions the Wizards or Bobcats as possible destinations with the Sixers, in return, moving up from pick fifteen. Ford mentions Bradley Beal, Thomas Robinson or Andre Drummond as Sixers' targets. Here are others odds and ends from around the league on Sunday night:
Odds & Ends: Magic, Bobcats, Wolves, Cavs, Draft
We already heard from new Blazers' general manager Neil Olshey tonight, who implied that he all but has his mind made up that the man to fill Portland's coaching vacancy should be interim head coach Kaleb Canales. Portland is one of multiple franchises that needs to make decisions coaching and front office decisions this offseason. Let's look at some of those latest rumors as well as a couple more notes from around the league on this Tuesday night:
Blazers Introduce Neil Olshey As GM
Neil Olshey was introduced as the new Blazers GM today and spoke to the press for over 30 minutes (video via CSN Northwest). Olshey will be very busy very quickly with the NBA Draft approaching, free agency looming in July and of course, the Blazers' coaching vacancy. Last week the Clippers announced that they had agreed to retain Olshey as their general manager but after Portland kept pushing, the two sides parted ways and Olshey agreed to terms with the Blazers.
