Thon Maker Signs With Cavaliers
NOVEMBER 29: The signing is official, according to the Real GM Transactions Page.
NOVEMBER 28: Center Thon Maker is signing with the Cavaliers, Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype tweets.
It’s a training camp deal, according to Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (Twitter link). Maker became an unrestricted free agent when the Pistons failed to extend him a qualifying offer. He’ll look to make a strong enough impression to gain a spot on Cleveland’s 15-man roster.
The 23-year-old appeared in 60 game last season for Detroit, averaging 4.7 PPG and 2.8 RPG in 12.9 MPG. Maker began his career with the Bucks in 2016 after being selected with the 10th pick of the draft, but he never lived up to his lottery pick status. Detroit acquired him midway through the 2018/19 season.
Knicks Sign First-Round Pick Quickley
The Knicks have signed rookie guard Immanuel Quickley, according to a team press release.
The former Kentucky guard was taken with the 25th overall pick in the first round. The Thunder had his draft rights and traded them to New York in a three-team deal with Minnesota that was made official on November 20.
Assuming Quickley received the usual 120% above his rookie scale slot, he’ll make $2,105,520 in his first season. If he plays out the next four seasons on his rookie deal, he’ll make $10,803,948.
Quickley was named the 2019-20 SEC Player of the Year after posting averages of 16.1 PPG and 4.2 RPG over 33.0 MPG in 30 games as a sophomore last season.
Terence Davis Likely To Receive Contract Guarantee
Terence Davis is likely to have to his contract guaranteed despite domestic abuse allegations, Michael Grange of Rogers SportsNet reports.
The Raptors’ second-year shooting guard has a $1,517,981 salary for the upcoming season that becomes guaranteed on Sunday. He had a solid rookie campaign after going undrafted, appearing in 72 regular-season games and averaging 7.5 PPG, 3.3 RPG and 1.6 APG in 16.8 MPG. Davis, 23, also saw action in six postseason games.
In terms of on-court production, Davis easily earned the second-year guarantee. However, the assault case has endangered his future with the franchise, even though the Raptors have little choice but to guarantee his contract, as Grange describes in detail.
Davis participated in the team’s mini-camp in Los Angeles last week and is expected to be with the team for training camp next week, according to Grange.
Davis was arrested in New York City in late October and faces seven charges. Davis allegedly hit his girlfriend in the face, then grabbed the victim’s phone and broke it during the incident. The woman’s son also allegedly got knocked down during the altercation. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 11.
The league is conducting its own investigation into the incident and could eventually take disciplinary action. For now, the Raptors don’t have the option of disciplining Davis. If the Raptors waived Davis prior to the contract being guaranteed, the Players Association would likely file a grievance, since the case remains unresolved.
The Raptors thus has to wait until the league takes action to decide what to do with Davis. If they waive him after Sunday, they’ll be on the hook for his salary.
Spurs Sign First-Round Pick Vassell
The Spurs have signed lottery pick Devin Vassell, according to a team press release.
Assuming that Vassell received the usual 120% above the rookie scale for his draft slot, the swingman out of Florida State will make $4,033,440 during the upcoming season and a total of $18,593,499 over the next four seasons.
The 6’7” Vassell was chosen with the 11th overall pick, becoming the first Spurs lottery selection since 1997.
As a sophomore last season, Vassell averaged 12.7 PPG, 5.1 RPG and 1.6 APG in 28.7 MPG while shooting 41.5% from 3-point range.
Pacers Sign Brian Bowen To Two-Way Contract
NOVEMBER 28: Bowen’s two-way deal has been finalized, according to RealGM’s log of official transactions.
NOVEMBER 27: The Pacers made Brian Bowen an unrestricted free agent, then decided to bring him back.
Bowen will return to Indiana on a two-way deal, according to Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files. Indiana didn’t extend a qualifying offer to Bowen prior to free agency after he played his rookie season on a two-way deal.
The small forward appeared in just six games with the Pacers last season. He averaged 16.1 PPG and 7.7 RPG in 29 games with the G League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
Bowen played professionally in Australia during the 2018/19 season for the Sydney Kings before going undrafted.
Indiana has its other two-way spot available. Check out our Two-Way Contract Tracker for the latest updates.
Sixers To Sign Swingman Justin Anderson To Camp Deal
The Sixers are signing swingman Justin Anderson to a partially-guaranteed contract, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets. He’ll try to earn a roster spot during training camp.
It’s a two-year contract, Pompey adds in a subsequent update, with the first year having the partial guarantee.
Anderson signed with the Nets as a substitute player prior to the restart. He saw action in seven seeding games and three postseason contests. He averaged 6.3 PPG and 2.7 RPG in 9.3 MPG during those playoff appearances.
Anderson also signed a 10-day contract with the Nets in January and averaged 1.0 PPG in three games before being released by the organization. He also spent part of the season with Brooklyn’s G League affiliate in Long Island. A first-round pick by the Mavericks in 2015, Anderson had brief stops with the Sixers and Hawks as well.
Treveon Graham Signs Camp Contract With Bucks
DECEMBER 3: Graham’s non-guaranteed training camp deal is now official, per RealGM’s transactions log.
NOVEMBER 27: Swingman Treveon Graham is signing a training-camp contract from the Bucks, Eric Nehm of The Athletic tweets.
Graham, who became an unrestricted free agent after the season, will look to earn a roster spot during the preseason. He was with the Hawks prior to the restart after he was tossed into the deal that sent Allen Crabbe to the Timberwolves in January.
He received steady playing time with Minnesota (20.1 MPG), including 20 starts, but his playing time dwindled with the Hawks. He appeared in 22 games for Atlanta, averaging 3.3 PPG in 12.1 MPG.
Graham has appeared in 180 career games with stops in Charlotte and Brooklyn along the way.
Kings Sign Lottery Pick Haliburton
The Kings have signed their lottery pick, guard Tyrese Haliburton, according to a team press release.
Haliburton was the 12th overall pick in the draft. Assuming he received 120% of the rookie scale for his draft slot, as virtually all first-rounders do, Haliburton will make $17,878,995 over the next four seasons. His first-year salary will be $3,831,840.
Haliburton was one of the top point guards in the draft, though he could often play in two-point looks with the Kings. As a sophomore at Iowa State, he averaged 15.2 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 6.5 APG and 2.5 SPG and 36.7 MPG in 22 games before a wrist injury ended his season.
“We are thrilled to have drafted Tyrese and excited to welcome him to the Kings family,” GM Monte McNair said. “He is an incredibly talented athlete whose shooting, creative passing and ball handling skills combined with his ability to defend either guard position will be a valuable addition to our backcourt. Tyrese also has an engaging personality and is just the type of high character individual who fits the future of what we are building in Sacramento.”
Mavs Sign Tyrell Terry To Four-Year Deal
DECEMBER 1: The Mavericks have made it official with Terry, the team announced today (via Twitter).
NOVEMBER 27: The Mavericks are expected to give a four-year contract to rookie guard Tyrell Terry, Tim MacMahon of ESPN tweets.
MacMahon anticipates a pact similar to the four-year, $6.1MM contract that Dallas handed Jalen Brunson prior to his rookie year in 2018.
Terry was the first pick in the second round of this month’s draft. Terry averaged 14.6 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 3.2 APG and 1.4 SPG in his lone year with Stanford.
Dallas is signing small forward Tyler Bey, who was taken five picks after Terry, to a two-way contract.
Mavericks Re-Sign J.J. Barea
DECEMBER 1: The signing is official, according to the team’s PR department (Twitter link).
NOVEMBER 27: Shams Charania of The Athletic confirms (via Twitter) that Barea’s new guaranteed one-year deal will be worth the veteran’s minimum. He’ll earn $2.56MM, with a cap hit of $1.62MM.
NOVEMBER 22: Barea will get a guaranteed contract from the Mavs, per Towsend (Twitter link). Considering he’s coming off a one-year, minimum-salary deal, it’s a safe bet that Barea will sign the same contract this time around.
NOVEMBER 21: The Mavericks are planning to re-sign veteran guard J.J. Barea, Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News tweets.
Barea, 36, has seen his role diminish and he’s also dealt with some injuries over the past two seasons but he remains a fan favorite. He appeared in 29 regular-season games last season, including six starts, and averaged 7.7 PPG and 3.9 APG in 15.5 MPG.
Dallas agreed to a three-year deal with another free agent guard, Trey Burke, so Barea would many serve as insurance in case of backcourt injuries. It also has Jalen Brunson as a point guard option behind star Luka Doncic.
Dallas has agreed to trade another guard, Delon Wright, in a three-team swap and Townsend speculates the Mavs might make more backcourt moves to clear a logjam. Barea has been on Dallas’ roster since the 2014/15 season.
