On this date in 1991, USA Basketball announced the “Dream Team” for the 1992 Olympics. Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, and John Stockton were named to the team. Not bad. In May of the next year, Christian Laettner and Clyde Drexler were added to the squad.

Roughly three years ago today, Ron Artest legally changed his name to Metta World Peace. This summer, MWP signed to play with the Sichuan Blue Whales of the Chinese Basketball Association and he told his fans on Twitter that he’ll be changing his name to The Pandas Friend.

Roughly 35 years ago today, Ann Meyers of UCLA signed a contract with the Pacers. Although Meyers did not make the team, she became the first woman given a tryout by an NBA team, and she worked with the team through training camp.
Recently, women’s basketball star Becky Hammon made history when she was named as an assistant coach for the Spurs. Not only is the six-time WNBA All-Star the first female full-time assistant coach in NBA history, she’s the first female to serve in that capacity in any of the four major professional sports in North America.

On this date in 1990, Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, the first African American player in Knicks history, passed away at the age of 67 from a heart attack. As a 27-year-old NBA rookie, Clifton helped lead the Knicks to their first-ever appearance in the NBA finals, losing in Game Seven. During his eight seasons in the NBA, Clifton averaged 10 PPG and 9 RPG per contest. At age 34, he became the oldest player to that point in NBA history to be named an All-Star.

On this date in 2007, troubled forward Eddie Griffin died in a car crash in Houston. The former Seton Hall star had more than three times the legal alcohol limit in his system when he crashed. Griffin was drafted with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2001 draft, a testament to his talent and athleticism, but was never able to put it all together at the next level.

On this date in 1920, legendary Knicks coach Red Holzman was born in Brooklyn, New York. From 1967 to 1982, Holzman manned the sidelines for the Knicks and helped lead them to two NBA championships in 1970 and 1973. Holzman’s lengthy stint as Knicks coach was interrupted only in 1977 when his former star pupil Willis Reed took over coaching duties, but he would return back to his rightful place on the bench near the start of the 1978/79 campaign.

The BAA included the Boston Celtics, Minneapolis Lakers (later Los Angeles Lakers), New York Knicks, Philadelphia Warriors (later Golden State Warriors), and the Rochester Royals (later Sacramento Kings). The NBL included the Syracuse Nationals (later Philadelphia 76ers) and the Tri-Cities Blackhawks (later Atlanta Hawks).

Hoops Links: Butler, Lance, LeBron
On this date in 2000, Isiah Thomas was named head coach of the Pacers, replacing Larry Bird, who stepped down following the 1999-2000 NBA season. Thomas, then 39, was a 12-time All-Star and led the Pistons to two NBA championships and was the Finals MVP in 1990. He also led Indiana University to the NCAA championship in 1981. As with Bird, who was the 1997-98 NBA Coach of the Year, the Pacers’ job was Thomas’ first coaching experience. Thomas coached the Pacers to three consecutive winning seasons, though each campaign ended with a first-round ouster.
