A look back at the news and transactions from this past week:
- The biggest story of the week was the Lakers' hiring of Mike D'Antoni to replace the fired Mike Brown. The hiring came as a surprise, as a Phil Jackson return was heavily rumored over the weekend. Jackson even went as far as to say that he was initially offered the job before the Lakers hired D'Antoni.
- The Bobcats traded Matt Carroll to the Hornets for Hakim Warrick. Carroll and New Orleans are reportedly negotiating a buyout to his contract.
- The Hornets also signed general manager Dell Demps to a three-year contract extension.
- Rockets rookie Royce White has left the team over a dispute regarding their handling of his well-publicized anxiety disorder. White is slated to meet with GM Daryl Morey on Monday, and has hinted that he would consider retirement if an agreement is not reached.
- The Rockets also assigned rookies Scott Machado and Donatas Motiejunas to the D-League. White was originally intended to be assigned as well, but league rules limit teams to assigning two players at once.
- Former Bucks forward Jon Brockman signed in France.
- Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard is expected to be out for 10-14 days with left knee tendinitis.

- The biggest story of the week was the Lakers' firing of head coach Mike Brown after a disappointing 1-4 start to the season. Assistant Bernie Bickerstaff has served as interim head coach while the team explores a more permanent option. The team is aggressively pursuing Phil Jackson to return to the bench, but has also reached out to former Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy and former Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni.
- Pacers forward Danny Granger could be out as long as three months due to recurring knee problems.
- The Timberwolves are considering reaching out to free agents Mickael Pietrus and Josh Howard as they battle injuries to several key players.

Week In Review: 10/22/12 – 10/28/12
It was a very busy week in the NBA, with teams around the league exercising options for 2013/14, and making cuts in advance of the regular season. In addition to all those roster moves, there were a pair of big stories involving the NBA commissioner and the reigning Sixth Man of the Year. Here's a round-up of the week's news and rumors:
- Late Saturday night, the Thunder stunned the league by sending James Harden to the Rockets along with Cole Aldrich, Lazar Hayward, and Daequan Cook. Oklahoma City received Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb, and a handful of draft picks in return. As you might imagine, the deal inspired plenty of reactions.
- David Stern will step down as NBA commissioner in February of 2014, exactly 30 years after he took over the job. Before he retires, Stern is hoping to return an NBA team to Seattle.
- The NBA has officially eliminated the center position from the All-Star ballot, allowing fans to select two guards and three frontcourt players instead. The league also formally approved the sale of the Grizzlies to Robert Pera.
Week In Review: 10/15/12 – 10/21/12

- Timberwolves star Kevin Love broke his hand working out away from the team and will be out up to 8 weeks. The Wolves waived Jermaine Taylor. Mike Harris, Chris Johnson and Will Conroy will be battling it out for the team's 15th roster spot.
- The Hawks waived Carldell Johnson to get their roster to 16.
- The Kings picked up the options on third year players DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmer Fredette after waiving Cyril Awere.

- The Celtics signed Leandro Barbosa for the veterans minimum after waiving Dionte Christmas and Jamar Smith.
- The Jazz waived Brian Butch and Trey Gilder. Their roster stands at 17.
- The Bulls waived Kyrlyo Fesenko to get their roster down to 15.
- Executives around the league think that the Lakers may target LeBron James in 2014 should Kobe Bryant retire. Jim Buss contributed to the rumor mill, saying that the Lakers want to make a splash in 2014, though James pleaded ignorance.
- Dirk Nowitzki had arthroscopic knee surgery and will be sidelined 6 weeks.
- The Wizards exercised up the 2013-14 options for six players: John Wall, Kevin Seraphin, Trevor Booker, Jordan Crawford, Jan Vesely and Chris Singleton.
- The Cavs picked up the 2013-14 options for sophomores Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson.
- After a strong rookie season, the Nets picked up the 2013-14 option on the contract of MarShon Brooks.
