Cuttino Mobley

And-Ones: BIG3, Francis, Coaching Candidates

The BIG3 basketball league, which will make its debut in less than three months, continues to add notable former NBA players to its ranks. According to a press release from the league, former star guard Steve Francis headlines the latest round of additions to the draft pool, along with Kendall Gill, DeShawn Stevenson, Joe Smith, Hakim Warrick, and others.

Meanwhile, one of Francis’ teammates from their Rockets days will be a co-captain on a new team called Power, per a press release. According to the announcement, Cuttino Mobley is joining forces with Corey Maggette on the club, which is one of seven to be confirmed so far. When BIG3 games get underway this June, the league will feature eight teams.

Here are a few more odds and ends from around the basketball world:

  • In a piece for ESPN.com, Kevin Arnovitz identifies five head coaching prospects to watch, including Raptors 905 coach Jerry Stackhouse, Hawks assistant Darvin Ham, and TNT analyst Brent Barry.
  • Speaking of future head coaches, commissioner Adam Silver believes a woman will coach an NBA team at some point, and wouldn’t mind seeing it happen sooner rather than later, as Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.com outlines. Spurs assistant Becky Hammon is currently viewed as the top candidate to break that barrier.
  • Silver got involved last week in the league-wide debate over resting healthy players, calling it a “significant issue” and suggesting that there will be penalties for teams who don’t provide sufficient notice when resting stars. In the view of Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, Silver’s involvement in the issue could create a “slippery slope” that contributes to undermining relationships around the NBA. Michael C. Wright of ESPN.com has the details, including the quotes from Popovich.
  • An ESPN.com panel is ranking each of the NBA’s front offices, assigning grades to each club’s coach, GM, and owner. The full list can be found right here, from the Spurs at No. 1 to the Knicks at No. 30.

Cuttino Mobley Drops Suit To Aid Comeback Bid

Cuttino Mobley today dropped his case against the corporate parents of the Knicks in an effort to draw offers from NBA teams as the 37-year-old guard attempts a comeback, a source tells Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com. A report in May indicated that Mobley would take part in a public workout with draft prospects and other veteran free agents, but so far no team has been willing to sign him.

Mobley had sued the Madison Square Garden company in 2011, alleging that the Knicks pressured him into retirement after they sent him to specialists whom the team knew would advise against him playing with his pre-existing heart condition. With the doctors' opinion that Mobley should not continue to play, the Knicks could collect the insurance on his contract and avoid about $19MM worth of luxury tax payments. Mobley had talks with other teams shortly after his retirement, but they were unwilling to sign him given concerns about his health, according to Zwerling's report.

Mobley is currently playing pickup games at the Clippers facility. The Clippers are the last team Mobley played for, and they sent him to the Knicks in November 2008 in a trade that touched off the controversy.

Cuttino Mobley Attempting NBA Comeback

After an 11-year NBA career, Cuttino Mobley announced his retirement in December 2008 when he was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition. Although Mobley hasn't appeared in an NBA game in nearly five years, he'll be attempting to make a comeback this year, according to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld.

Kennedy reports that ASM Sports, an agency that represents Kevin Garnett, Serge Ibaka, and Jeff Teague, among others, is holding a workout on May 31st for their draft prospects and veteran free agents. Mobley is one of a handful of veteran ASM clients expected to participate in drills and five-on-five scrimmages that day. According to Kennedy, Josh Howard, Rasual Butler, and Christian Eyenga are among the other free agents who will be in attendance.

It will be an uphill battle for Mobley, who will turn 38 before the 2013/14 season begins. I'd be surprised if he lands a spot on an NBA roster, but he did demonstrate exceptional scoring ability during his 11-year career. In 747 total contests for the Rockets, Clippers, Magic, and Kings, Mobley averaged 16.0 PPG to go along with shooting percentages of .433/.378/.835.
