Odds & Ends: Miles, Magic, Celtics, Hawks
With free agent news and rumors dominating the headlines over the last week, it's been easy to miss a number of other stories that have flown under the radar. One such story today: The Wizards have hired Don Newman as an assistant coach under Randy Wittman. A longtime NBA assistant coach, Newman has spent the last seven years on the Spurs' bench in San Antonio, and represents a solid hire for Washington.

Amnesty Provision Tracker
When the NBA introduced the amnesty clause in the 2005 Collective Bargaining Agreement, it could only be used in the summer of ’05. However, when the league and players’ union reached an agreement on the new CBA in 2011, the amnesty provision was modified to allow teams to use it in any of the next five offseasons.
You can read more about how the amnesty provision works in our Hoops Rumors glossary entry, but the purpose of this post is to track which teams have used the amnesty clause to date, and which teams still have it in their back pockets. You can find this tracker at any time on the right sidebar under “Hoops Rumors Features.”
Here’s how the amnesty landscape currently looks:
DeJuan Blair Not Expecting To Return To Spurs
Back on draft day, we heard that the Spurs were shopping DeJuan Blair, in hopes of clearing space on their roster. While it appears San Antonio has yet to find an acceptable trade for the big man, Blair is prepared not to return to the Spurs next season, as he tells Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News.
Raja Bell, Jazz Agree To Contract Buyout
After reporting last night that the Jazz were close to reaching a buyout agreement with Raja Bell, Brian T. Smith of the Salt Lake Tribune confirms that the two sides have reached a verbal agreement on a contract buyout. Once the deal is made official and Bell becomes an unrestricted free agent, he'll be free to sign with any team in the league, and the veteran says he intends to explore all his options.
Week In Review: 7/2/12 – 7/8/12

International Moves: Krstic, Kirilenko, Wafer
Behind 25 points from Ike Diogu, Nigeria defeated the Domincan Republic on Sunday for the final spot in the Olympics. The international game will garner plenty of attention over the next month or so, and tonight there's news about a few former, and perhaps future, NBA players as they make their decisions concerning pro teams overseas. Here's the latest:
Kings Reach Agreement With Jason Thompson
The Kings and Jason Thompson have agreed to terms, reports Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee. It's a multi-year deal worth $6MM per season, Jones tweets, while the precise length of the contract remains unclear The two sides had been close to an agreement earlier today, so the move comes as little surprise. The move will become official after the moratorium on signing ends Wednesday.
Geoff Petrie, the team's president of basketball operations, indicated the Kings aren't done dealing in the wake of the Thompson agreement and missing out on Ryan Anderson, who agreed today to go to the Hornets in a sign-and-trade.
Dwight Howard Rumors: Sunday
11:02pm: The Magic, Nets and Cavs are in "serious talks" about a deal involving Dwight Howard and others, reports Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld, who said Magic executives will meet Monday morning to determine if the deal is the right one, and an agreement could come sometime Monday (Twitter links). The Magic will complete "one last sweep" around the league before deciding whether to pull the trigger on the 11-player trade, says Jarrod Rudolph of RealGM.com (Twitter links). A key to the deal could be the willingness of the Cavs to take MarShon Brooks from the Nets, because the Magic isn't interested in the swingman, report Chris Broussard and Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com. Many teams concerned about competitive balance are reluctant to facilitate a blockbuster deal, Broussard and Windhorst report, so the Magic and Nets must overcome that obstacle.
9:58pm: The Sixers are also a possibility to acquire Humphries as part of a three-team that would send Howard to the Nets, Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld notes via Twitter. In an email to Tom Moore of PhillyBurbs.com, Sixers president Rod Thorn indicated a move may in the works, but declined to give details.
