NBA Teams Designate Affiliate Players

NBA teams cut as much as 25% of their rosters at the end of the preseason, but franchises that have D-League affiliates have a way to maintain ties to many of the players they release from the NBA roster. An NBA team can claim the D-League rights to up to four of the players it waives, as long as the players clear waivers, consent to join the D-League, and don’t already have their D-League rights owned by another team. These are known as affiliate players, as our Hoops Rumors Glossary entry details.

NBA teams allocated 46 affiliate players to the D-League at the beginning of the season last year, and this year, that number has risen to 56, according to the list the D-League announced today. These players are going directly to the D-League affiliate of the NBA team that cut them and weren’t eligible for the D-League draft that took place Saturday. Teams that designated fewer than the maximum four affiliate players retain the ability to snag the D-League rights of players they waive during the regular season, but for now, this is the complete list:

Boston Celtics (Maine Red Claws)

Cleveland Cavaliers (Canton Charge)

Dallas Mavericks (Texas Legends)

Detroit Pistons (Grand Rapids Drive)

Golden State Warriors (Santa Cruz Warriors)

Houston Rockets (Rio Grande Valley Vipers)

Indiana Pacers (Fort Wayne Mad Ants)

Los Angeles Lakers (Los Angeles D-Fenders)

Memphis Grizzlies (Iowa Energy)

Miami Heat (Sioux Falls Skyforce)

New York Knicks (Westchester Knicks)

Oklahoma City Thunder (Oklahoma City Blue)

Orlando Magic (Erie BayHawks)

Philadelphia 76ers (Delaware 87ers)

Phoenix Suns (Bakersfield Jam)

Sacramento Kings (Reno Bighorns)

San Antonio Spurs (Austin Spurs)

Toronto Raptors (Raptors 905)

Utah Jazz (Idaho Stampede)

Also, several players who were on NBA preseason rosters are on D-League rosters through means other than the affiliate player rule. Most of them played under D-League contracts at some point within the last two years, meaning their D-League teams have returning player rights to them. Others entered through last weekend’s D-League draft, while others saw their D-League rights conveyed via trade. Most of these players aren’t with the D-League affiliate of the NBA team they were with last month, with a few exceptions.

Roster information from Adam Johnson of D-League Digest, Chris Reichert of Upside & Motor and freelancer and Hoops Rumors contributor Mark Porcaro was used in the creation of this post.

Thunder Waive Cobbins, Farrakhan

The Thunder have waived power forward Michael Cobbins and combo guard Mustapha Farrakhan, the team announced via a press release. Both players were signed to non-guaranteed pacts, so OKC won’t be on the hook for any funds as a result of these moves. The team’s roster count is now at 15 players, which is the regular season maximum.

Cobbins, 23, went undrafted out of Oklahoma State this year after appearing in 105 career collegiate contests and averaging 5.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 25.4 minutes per game. A two-time member of the Big 12 All-Defensive Team, Cobbins ranked second in the conference in blocks per game (1.83) during his senior season.

Farrakhan, 26, spent the 2011/12 and 2012/13 campaigns in the NBA D-League, averaging 8.0 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 18.3 minutes in 70 games split between four teams. The University of Virginia product spent the 2013/14 season overseas with Melbourne United in Australia, notching averages of 10.4 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 20.8 minutes per contest.

Thunder Ink Cobbins, Farrakhan

The Thunder have agreed to deals with power forward Michael Cobbins and combo guard Mustapha Farrakhan, the team announced via a press release. The length and details of the pacts were not announced, but they are both most likely minimum salary arrangements that include little or no guaranteed money, though that is merely my speculation. Both players were likely added with designs on sending them to the team’s D-League affiliate. These additions will increase OKC’s roster count to 17 players, two over the regular season maximum.

Clippers Waive Green, Farrakhan

The Clippers announced today that they have waived JaMychal Green and Mustapha Farrakhan, trimming their roster down to 16 players. The two combined for 11 minutes of play during Monday night’s preseason victory against the Trail Blazers.

Farrakhan has spent the past two seasons on several teams in the D-League, posting averages of 8.0 PPG, 2.5 APG, and 1.9 RPG. In 40 games with the D-League’s Austin Toros last season, Green averaged 12.3 PPG and 8.1 RPG.

Farrakhan spent the 2012 preseason with the Bucks, while Green participated in the Spurs training camp.

Clippers Sign Mustapha Farrakhan

The Clippers have finalized their camp roster, and one player we hadn't previously heard mentioned is among the invitees. Mustapha Farrakhan will be in camp with the team, the Clippers announced today in a press release.

Farrakhan, 25, participated in camp with the Bucks a year ago, but was released before the regular season began. He spent the year bouncing around the D-League, appearing in multiple games for the Iowa Energy, Sioux Falls Skyforce, and Idaho Stampede. The 6'4" guard averaged just 6.8 PPG on 38.0% shooting for the season.

With the addition of Farrakhan, the Clippers will carry 18 players into camp, including 13 on fully guaranteed deals.

Bucks Waive Tucker, Gill, Farrakhan, Greene

The Bucks have waived Alando Tucker, Eddie Gill, Mustapha Farrakhan, and Orien Greene, according to C.F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (via Twitter).  Milwaukee is now at the regular season roster limit of 15.

Tucker was a former first-round pick of the Suns in the 2007 draft but was never able to live up to expectations.  The 6’6″ forward out of Wisconsin has been absent from the league since being cut by the Timberwolves in December of 2009.

Gill, 34, has been out of the Association since his last go-round with the Bucks in 2008/09.  Farrakhan played for the Knicks’ summer league squad this season before hooking on with Milwaukee on October 1st.  Greene, 30, spent last season in the D-League and averaged 9.2 PPG and 3.4 RPG for the Los Angeles D-Fenders.

Bucks Sign Four To Camp Roster

The Bucks have added four players to their training camp roster on non-guaranteed deals, according to various reports. Emiliano Carchia of Sportando first reported (via Twitter) that the team had signed Orien Greene, Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports reported (via Twitter) the signing of Mustapha Farrakhan, and Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel added Alando Tucker and Eddie Gill to the list of new Bucks (Twitter link).

We had previously heard that Greene, a four-year NBA veteran, and Tucker, a former Wisconsin standout and first-round pick, were auditioning for the Bucks in hopes of landing training camp invites. Farrakhan, meanwhile, played for the Knicks' summer league squad, while Gill hasn't appeared in an NBA game since he played for Milwaukee in the 2008/09 season.

The Bucks already have 15 players on guaranteed contracts, so it will be an uphill battle for any of these four players to earn a regular-season roster spot with the team. The team's roster now stands at 19 players.
