NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 11/19/16

Listed below are Saturday’s D-League assignments and recalls from around the NBA. This post will be updated throughout the day if and when other teams announce moves.

6:47pm:

  • The Suns have recalled Derrick Jones Jr. from the Northern Arizona Suns, the team’s D-League affiliate, according to their Twitter feed.
  • The Clippers have assigned Diamond Stone to the D-League and he will play for the Santa Cruz Warriors, Marc J. Spears of ESPN.com tweets.
  • The Bucks have assigned Rashad Vaughn to the D-League and he will play for the Westchester Knicks, Chris Reichert of The Step Back reports (Twitter link).

1:11pm

  • The Spurs have assigned Dejounte Murray and Bryn Forbes to the D-League, according to the team. While the headline of San Antonio’s press release indicates Murray has been recalled from the Austin Spurs, the rookie had already been with the NBA club, and the release itself says he and Forbes are being sent to Austin, where they’ll be available for tonight’s game against the Erie Bayhawks. It’s already the fifth assignment of the season for Murray, and the third for Forbes.

NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 11/18/16

Here are Friday’s D-League assignments and recalls from across the NBA:

11:35pm

  • The Knicks assigned Ron Baker and Marshall Plumlee to their D-League affiliate in Westchester, the team announced (Twitter link). The duo will play in the team’s contest in White Plains on Saturday.
  • The Clippers have assigned rookie big man Diamond Stone to the D-League, Chris Reichert of Upside & Motor relays (via Twitter). Since Los Angeles does not have a D-League affiliate of its own, Stone will report to the Santa Cruz Warriors via the flexible assignment rule, Reichert adds.

2:31pm

  • The Kings have recalled rookie center Georgios Papagiannis from the D-League, the team announced today in a press release. The first-rounder’s assignment lasted three games, during which he averaged 10.3 PPG, 6.7 RPG, and 2.3 BPG for the Reno Bighorns. His fellow first-rounders, Malachi Richardson and Skal Labissiere, remain in the D-League for now.
  • Rookie big man Ivica Zubac has been recalled by the Lakers from the Los Angeles D-Fenders, the club confirmed in a press release. Zubac, who has appeared in three games for the Lakers, saw 23 minutes of action in his D-League debut on Thursday, and recorded 13 points, three boards, and a pair of blocked shots.

Ben Bentil To Play In China

After appearing in just a single D-League game for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, rookie power forward Ben Bentil is headed to China as an injury replacement, according to Adam Johnson of D-League Digest, who adds (via Twitter) that Fort Wayne is expecting Bentil back later in the season.

It has been an eventful offseason for Bentil, who left Providence after his sophomore year to enter the NBA draft, then was selected 51st overall by the Celtics. Boston, however, had a crowded roster and didn’t have room for Bentil — the team hoped to send him to its D-League affiliate in Maine after giving him a $250K guarantee. Instead, Bentil briefly signed with the Pacers – who gave him a $50K guarantee – and joined Indiana’s D-League affiliate in Fort Wayne.

In his first and only contest with the Mad Ants, Bentil led the club to a blowout victory with a team-high 27 points and 10 rebounds in 45 minutes. Just a few days later though, it appears he has received a more enticing offer from a Chinese team.

Terms of Bentil’s new deal aren’t known, but if it’s a standard CBA contract, he’ll be in China until at least February, and potentially longer than that if his team makes a postseason run. Dakota Schmidt of Ridiculous Upside tweets that Fort Wayne expects Bentil back in about two months, so the 21-year-old may not play the full CBA season.

Because he was waived by Celtics, Bentil’s NBA rights are no longer held by Boston, meaning he could be picked up by any of the league’s 30 teams upon his return if he impresses overseas.

Mavs Waive Quincy Acy, Re-Sign Jonathan Gibson

NOVEMBER 18: The Mavericks have made it official, announcing in a press release that they’ve re-signed Gibson and requested waivers on Acy.

NOVEMBER 17: In need of some point guard depth, the Mavericks are bringing back a familiar face, reports Shams Charania of The Vertical. According to Charania (via Twitter), Dallas will re-sign free agent guard Jonathan Gibson, waiving Quincy Acy to create room on the 15-man roster.

Gibson, who turned 29 last Tuesday, signed a three-year deal with the Mavericks back in July. However, even though that contract included a guaranteed salary for 2016/17, Dallas opted to part ways with him during the preseason roster cutdown. With Deron Williams, Devin Harris, and J.J. Barea all banged up, however, the Mavs needed to add another point guard to complement Seth Curry.

As for Acy, the veteran big man was another offseason signing for the Mavs, inking a two-year deal with a guaranteed first-year salary. The 26-year-old only appeared in six games for Dallas this season, averaging a career-low eight minutes per contest. Acy was limited by foot and eye injuries, but is healthy now and will have the opportunity to catch on with another club once he clears waivers, tweets Charania.

As we noted earlier today, when we examined 2016/17 dead money for Southwest clubs, Gibson already counted for about $543K against the Mavs’ cap. His new deal will add about $469K in prorated salary to Dallas’ books, per Bobby Marks of The Vertical (Twitter link). Meanwhile, Acy’s $1.051MM salary will stay on the cap as well, increasing the Mavs’ dead-money total and pushing the team closer to the tax line.

NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 11/17/16

Here are Thursday’s D-League assignments and recalls from around the NBA:

  • The Hornets have assigned a pair of players to the D-League, announcing today in a press release that guard Aaron Harrison and forward Christian Wood have been sent to the Greensboro Swarm. Harrison and Wood have each only appeared in a single game for Charlotte this season, but if they remain with the D-League squad until Friday night, they should get plenty of minutes for Greensboro in the team’s game against the Raptors 905.
  • Rakeem Christmas, who spent a good chunk of his rookie season in 2015/16 with Fort Wayne, has been assigned to the Mad Ants for the first time this season, the Pacers announced today in a press release. It’s not clear how long the assignment will last.
  • The Raptors have once again assigned Bruno Caboclo and Fred VanVleet to their D-League affiliate, and with the NBA team headed on a nine-day road trip, Caboclo and VanVleet could have a longer stay with the Raptors 905 this time around, writes Blake Murphy of Raptors Republic.

Nuggets Sign Swingman Alonzo Gee

WEDNESDAY, 10:55 am: The Nuggets officially announced the signing of Gee on their Twitter feed.

TUESDAY, 6:54 pm: The Nuggets are finalizing a deal to add Alonzo Gee to the team, Shams Charania of The Vertical reports (Twitter link). Denver has only 14 players on the books after waiving Jarnell Stokes earlier today.

Gee spent last season with the Pelicans and nearly made New Orleans’ roster this year before being waived right before the season started. He’s previously played for Denver during the 2014/15 season, though he was traded mid-season to the Blazers in the Aaron Afflalo deal.

Wing depth is an area of concern for the Nuggets. Will Barton remains sidelined because of an ankle injury and his absence has led to Jameer Nelson playing alongside Emmanuel Mudiay in the starting lineup. Earlier today, we learned that Denver could be without Gary Harris for up to four weeks because of a foot injury.

Nuggets Waive Forward Jarnell Stokes

The Nuggets have waived forward Jarnell Stokes, league sources informed Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post (Twitter link). Marc J. Spears of ESPN.com confirms the transaction in a tweet.

Stokes, who missed the last two games with a foot injury, appeared in just two games this season and played a total of seven minutes. The 6’9” power forward appeared in 21 games with the Grizzlies over the last two seasons and another handful with the Heat. He has averaged 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 5.4 minutes in 28 career games.

He was signed by Denver in September to a two-year contract and received $150K in guarantee money. His $980K salary for this season would have been fully guaranteed if he had remained on the roster through January 10th.

The University of Tennessee product was originally drafted by the Jazz with the No. 35 overall pick in 2014.

NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 11/15/16

Here are Tuesday’s D-League assignments and recalls from around the NBA:

  • One of the Sixers‘ two first-round picks this year – Ben Simmons – has yet to make his debut with the team due to a foot injury, and now Philadelphia’s other first-rounder is headed to the D-League. The 76ers announced today in a press release that they’ve assigned rookie Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot to the Delaware 87ers.
  • The Spurs assigned Dejounte Murray to the D-League today, just in time for the rookie guard to play in the Austin Spurs’ Tuesday afternoon victory over the Reno Bighorns. Murray flirted with a triple-double in the win, posting 14 points, 10 rebounds, and a team-high seven assists. He was recalled by San Antonio after the game.
  • Former first-round pick Josh Huestis was assigned to the Oklahoma City Blue again today by the Thunder, the team announced in a press release. Huestis is expected to suit up for OKC’s D-League squad tonight against the Salt Lake City Stars.
  • The Knicks have assigned rookie big man Marshall Plumlee to their D-League affiliate in Westchester, and he’s expected to play for the team on Wednesday night against Greensboro (Twitter link).

D.J. Kennedy To Play In China

After being waived by the Nuggets last month, D.J. Kennedy will head back overseas and continue his career in China, reports international basketball journalist David Pick. According to Pick (via Twitter), Kennedy has signed a deal with China’s Foshan Lions.

Kennedy, who turned 27 this month, originally went undrafted out of St. John’s back in 2011. Although he has participated in various training camps over the years with the Grizzlies, Mavericks, and Nuggets, Kennedy’s only NBA regular season experience consists of two games with the Cavaliers during the 2011/12 campaign — he averaged 6.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG and 1.5 APG in 29.5 minutes per outing.

Kennedy has split the remainder of his playing career between the NBA D-League and international teams. He spent the 2015/16 campaign with the Russian club Enisey Krasnoyarsk, appearing in 40 games and averaging 14.9 PPG, 7.4 RPG and 3.7 APG. Kennedy’s shooting line on the year was .451/.287/.809.

The Nuggets paid Kennedy a partial guarantee of $50K to come to training camp with the team this fall, but cut him along with Axel Toupane and JaKarr Sampson about a month ago.

The Foshan Lions cut former UConn standout Ryan Boatright to accommodate the signing of Kennedy, according to Pick.

NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 11/14/16

Here are Monday’s D-League assignments and recalls from around the NBA. This list will be updated throughout the day as new moves are reported or announced.

11:55am:

  • The Spurs have recalled Davis Bertans, Bryn Forbes, and Dejounte Murray from the Austin Spurs, the team announced today in a press release. All three players appeared in Austin’s season opener on Sunday, with Bertans and Murray combining for 40 points.
  • R.J. Hunter has been recalled from the D-League by the Bulls, according to a press release from the team. Hunter averaged 17.0 PPG in two games for the Windy City Bulls this weekend, but will likely travel with Chicago on the team’s upcoming road trip.
  • The Raptors have recalled Bruno Caboclo from the D-League, the team announced today (via Twitter). Toronto’s D-League affiliate, Raptors 905, doesn’t open its season until this Friday, but once the team’s schedule begins, Caboclo could start spending more time in the D-League.

9:43am:

  • The Sixers have assigned Jerryd Bayless to their D-League affiliate, the team announced today in a press release. Veterans typically aren’t sent to D-League squads, but Bayless is recovering from a left wrist injury, and joining the Delaware 87ers is part of the veteran guard’s “ongoing rehabilitation program,” according to the Sixers. The move signals that Bayless should be nearing a return to the court.
