Celtics Rumors: Garnett, Allen, White, Draft

While NBA teams make final preparations for the 2012 draft, the Celtics got a headstart on the 2013 draft yesterday, as the league granted Boston an additional second-round pick. The second-rounder comes from Charlotte, by way of the Thunder, who reportedly failed to give the Celtics Jeff Green's full medical information when the teams agreed to a deadline deal involving Green in 2011. Still, GM Danny Ainge remains focused on this week, which includes tomorrow night's draft and the upcoming free agent period. Let's round up the latest comments from the Celtics GM on the team's plans….

Nets Extend Qualifying Offer To Brook Lopez

The Nets have officially extended a one-year qualifying offer to Brook Lopez, making him a restricted free agent, GM Billy King confirmed today (Twitter link via Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News). Because Lopez met the starter criteria, as defined by the CBA, his qualifying offer will be worth around $4.39MM.

The big man could choose to accept the one-year offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer, but he's far more likely to sign a multiyear deal this offseason. Having tendered the qualifying offer, the Nets will have a three-day window to match any offer sheet Lopez signs.

Deron Williams Declines Player Option

As expected, Deron Williams has officially decided not to pick up his player option for the 2012/13 season, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News (via Twitter). The decision means that Williams will hit unrestricted free agency this weekend, and will be eligible for a maximum salary of about $17.18MM, rather than the $17.78MM his option was worth, as I outlined here.

Here are a few more updates on this summer's top free agent:

Hoops Rumors Mock Draft 2.0

Draft week is finally here. On Thursday night, all 30 NBA teams will descend on the Prudential Center in downtown Newark in hopes of supplementing their rosters with the best that the college and international games have to offer. One first-round pick has already been traded and there are rumors circulating about several others, so expect plenty of action leading up to Thursday night.

Last week we published our first ever mock draft, which you can see here. Below is our second and final version. Just as before, these selections are based on what we are hearing around the league combined with our player evaluations and what we perceive to be a team's draft needs. These guidelines are important to remember, especially considering the immense amount of trade speculation floating around. Each pick is based on the assumption that the team will not trade its selection and will draft accordingly, though there is a fair amount of trade talk mixed in.

Wizards’ Lottery Pick Drawing Trade Interest

Immediately after the Wizards landed the third overall pick in the 2012 draft lottery, owner Ted Leonsis adamantly stated the team wouldn't be trading the pick. But it seems that hasn't stopped rival clubs from inquiring on its availability, just in case. According to Michael Lee of the Washington Post, the Wizards have been fielding calls this week from teams interested in moving up to No. 3, possibly to select Thomas Robinson.

Odds & Ends: Allen, Evans, Davis

According to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld, the general consensus around the league is that Ray Allen will join the Heat next year (Twitter link). Since the team will be about $2MM above the tax apron, the most that Miami would be able to offer would be the mini-mid level exception of $3MM. Here's more of tonight's miscellaneous links, including Tyreke Evans, Baron Davis, and the Bulls

Draft Rumors: Tuesday

With two days remaining until the 2012 draft, we've seen a first-round pick change hands for the first time this offseason, as the Timberwolves agreed to send the 18th overall pick to Houston in exchange for Chase Budinger and the rights to Lior Eliyahu. The general consensus is that the move is the precursor to a bigger deal for the Rockets, and Houston isn't the only team rumored to be shopping picks. Here are today's draft-related rumors, with the newest updates added to the top of the page throughout the day….

  • Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld tweeted that the Bucks are looking to move into the top 10, and are supposedly targeting John Henson
  • Kennedy says that the Rockets are still trying to acquire another first round pick, most recently in discussions with the Hornets about the 10th pick before talks broke down (Twitter link). He also tweeted that the Lakers and Nets are both looking to acquire a first rounder.

J.R. Smith Declines Player Option

TUESDAY, 6:08pm: Smith officially declined his player option for 2012-13 and will become a free agent on July 1st.

MONDAY, 4:15pm: Smith will likely opt out to re-sign with the Knicks for a 20% raise, tweets Marc Berman of the New York Post. As I wrote below, that would mean the Knicks would use the Non-Bird exception on Smith, and could retain their mid-level exception to use on another player. Smith would be eligible for a contract of up to about $12MM over four years.
