Kris Jenkins

Wizards Reach Agreement With Kris Jenkins

The Wizards have reached a free agent agreement with Villanova’s Kris Jenkins, tweets David Aldridge of TNT.

Jenkins is best known as the hero of the 2016 NCAA championship game, when he sank a last-second shot to defeat North Carolina. The 6’6″ forward returned to the Wildcats for his senior season and put up 13.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Washington didn’t have any picks in tonight’s draft and will be looking for inexpensive players to help rebuild its bench, so Jenkins may have a chance to make the 15-man roster.

Atlantic Notes: Pre-Draft Workouts, 76ers, Nets

Although likely no other pre-draft workout will top the excitement of Markelle Fultz‘s with the 76ers on Saturday, followed by media availability, and the subsequent finalizing of the blockbuster trade that would bring Fultz to Philly, the Sixers held another session on Tuesday, Keith Pompey of Philly.com reports. Participants included Kris Jenkins (Villanova), Michael Young (Pittsburgh), Kadeem Allen (Arizona), Michael Ojo (Florida State), and Youssoupha Fall (France).

Eastern Draft Notes: Knicks, Smith, Hornets, Bulls

Former North Carolina State point guard Dennis Smith Jr. is in town to work out for the Knicks, according to Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com (Twitter link). Marc Berman of The New York Post tweets that the workout will take place tomorrow.

Smith, who was previously said to have a tentative session lined up with New York, has frequently been mentioned as a potential target for the club at No. 8. By that point, top point guards like Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, and De’Aaron Fox will almost certainly be off the board, but Smith may still be available, and the Knicks are in the market for a point guard of the future.

Here are a few more draft-related notes from around the Eastern Conference:

Kris Jenkins Pulls Out Of Draft

MAY 3RD, 10:22am: Jenkins has withdrawn from the draft as planned, the school announced.

APRIL 15TH, 8:16am: NCAA Tournament hero Kris Jenkins plans to withdraw from this year’s draft and return to Villanova, as he said to Stephen Rocco Disangro this week at the Philadelphia Big 5 Banquet (YouTube link; hat tip to Chris Lane of SB Nation’s VU Hoops blog and Jon Rothstein of CBSSports.com). The junior combo forward confirmed he’s decided to go through the predraft process, as new NCAA rules allow him to do, but he’ll pull out before the May 25th NCAA draft withdrawal deadline and won’t hire an agent. That will allow him to retain his college eligibility even as he participates in workouts with NBA teams and, if invited, the NBA combine.

Jenkins wouldn’t stand much chance of getting drafted if he were to stay in. He’s the 128th-best prospect in Chad Ford’s ESPN.com listings. Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress doesn’t include the junior in his rankings. The 6’6″ 22-year-old was 78th in the Recruiting Services Consensus Index coming out of high school, and while he overhauled his conditioning during his three years at Villanova, he’s yet to emerge as a top-level pro prospect.

Still, the buzzer-beating shot he made in the NCAA Tournament final to give the Wildcats the national championship earlier this month earned him no shortage of name recognition, and he played a major role for Villanova throughout the season, his first as a starter. He put up 13.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 28.4 minutes per game with 38.6% 3-point shooting. The Wildcats won the title despite a highly unusual lack of surefire NBA talent.

Kris Jenkins, Josh Hart To Enter NBA Draft

Villanova combo forward Kris Jenkins and shooting guard Josh Hart will test the waters and enter the 2016 NBA draft, Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com reports (via Twitter). The players don’t appear to be hiring agents, which would allow them to withdraw prior to the May 25th deadline and return to school if they want.

Jenkins, a junior, connected on the game-winning shot Monday evening that gave Villanova the 2015/16 NCAA championship. He appeared in 40 games for the Wildcats this season and averaged 13.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists. His slash line on the campaign was .459/.386/.845. The 22-year-old entered school as the No. 74 overall prospect according to the Recruiting Services Consensus Index. He isn’t currently ranked among the top 100 prospects by Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.

Hart comes in at No. 36 overall according to Chad Ford of ESPN.com, though he’s only the 17th-best junior according to Givony, who tabs him 68th overall and projects him as a second-round pick in 2017. The 21-year-old was the No. 97 overall recruit in his class according to the RSCI. Hart made 40 appearances for the Wildcats this season, notching averages of 15.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists to accompany a shooting line of .513/.357/.752.
