2018/19 NBA Over/Unders: Recap

Over the last two weeks, we’ve been going through each of the NBA’s 30 teams, publishing polls asking how many games each club will win this season. Using projections from professional oddsmakers, we’ve had you vote on whether each team will go over or under a given win total, from the Warriors (62.5) all the way through the Hawks (23.5).

Here are the full results of those votes:

Atlantic:

  • Boston Celtics (59.5 wins): Over (53.63%)
  • Toronto Raptors (55.5 wins): Over (56.95%)
  • Philadelphia 76ers (54.5 wins): Under (51.19%)
  • Brooklyn Nets (31.5 wins): Under (56.04%)
  • New York Knicks (28.5 wins): Under (54.13%)

Central:

  • Indiana Pacers (47.5 wins): Over (62.04%)
  • Milwaukee Bucks (47.5 wins): Over (73.7%)
  • Detroit Pistons (38.5 wins): Over (56.36%)
  • Cleveland Cavaliers (30.5 wins): Over (55.42%)
  • Chicago Bulls (29.5 wins): Over (61.8%)

Southeast:

Pacific:

  • Golden State Warriors (62.5 wins): Over (53.45%)
  • Los Angeles Lakers (48.5 wins): Over (55.2%)
  • Los Angeles Clippers (36.5 wins): Under (55.7%)
  • Phoenix Suns (29.5 wins): Under (53.4%)
  • Sacramento Kings (25.5 wins): Under (63.87%)

Southwest:

  • Houston Rockets (56.5 wins): Over (69.33%)
  • New Orleans Pelicans (45.5 wins): Under (53.4%)
  • San Antonio Spurs (44.5 wins): Under (60%)
  • Dallas Mavericks (34.5 wins): Over (55.16%)
  • Memphis Grizzlies (34.5 wins): Under (60.87%)

As those results show, we were fairly split on overs (16) and unders (14). As a group, we’re particularly bullish on the Central division, where we voted for the over on all five teams. There were no extremely close votes in the bunch — the slimmest margin was for the Sixers, where 51.19% of poll respondents expect them to go under 54.5 wins.

Here are the five “over” bets that received the largest vote shares:

  1. Milwaukee Bucks, 47.5 wins: 73.7%
  2. Houston Rockets, 56.5 wins: 69.33%
  3. Indiana Pacers, 47.5 wins: 62.04%
  4. Chicago Bulls, 29.5 wins: 61.8%
  5. Portland Trail Blazers, 42.5 wins: 59.6%

Here are the five “under” bets that received the largest vote shares:

  2. Sacramento Kings, 25.5 wins: 63.87%
  3. Minnesota Timberwolves, 41.5 wins: 62.53%
  4. Memphis Grizzlies, 34.5 wins: 60.87%
  5. San Antonio Spurs, 44.5 wins: 60%

Revisiting 2017/18 NBA Over/Under Predictions

Before the 2017/18 NBA season got underway, we polled Hoops Rumors readers on the win totals for each of the league’s 30 teams, using over/unders from major betting sites. From the Warriors (67.5) to the Bulls (22.5), our readers made their picks for whether each team’s win total would land over or under the projected figures.

The results of our polls suggested that the respondents were generally bullish on most NBA teams heading into 2017/18, with the “over” winning the vote for 23 teams, compared to just seven for the “under.” As I noted at the time, that outcome wasn’t technically impossible, but the unbalanced split indicated that we were probably a little too optimistic about some teams.

Nearly six months later, let’s check in on the results, comparing our over/under voting to each club’s actual win-loss record for 2017/18:

Western Conference:

  1. Golden State Warriors: Over 67.5: ✖️ (58-24)
  2. Houston Rockets: Over 55.5: ✔️ (65-17)
  3. San Antonio Spurs: Over 54.5: ✖️ (47-35)
  4. Oklahoma City Thunder: Over 50.5: ✖️ (48-34)
  5. Minnesota Timberwolves: Over 48.5: ✖️ (47-35)
  6. Denver Nuggets: Under 45.5: ✖️ (46-36)
  7. Los Angeles Clippers: Over 43.5: ✖️ (42-40)
  8. Portland Trail Blazers: Over 42.5: ✔️ (49-33)
  9. Utah Jazz: Over 41.5: ✔️ (48-34)
  10. New Orleans Pelicans: Over 39.5: ✔️ (48-34)
  11. Memphis Grizzlies: Over 37.5: ✖️ (22-60)
  12. Dallas Mavericks: Under 35.5: ✔️ (24-58)
  13. Los Angeles Lakers: Over 33.5: ✔️ (35-47)
  14. Phoenix Suns: Over 28.5: ✖️ (21-61)
  15. Sacramento Kings: Over 27.5: ✖️ (27-55)
    Total record: 6-9

Eastern Conference:

  1. Boston Celtics: Over 55.5: ✖️ (55-27)
  2. Cleveland Cavaliers: Over 53.5: ✖️ (50-32)
  3. Toronto Raptors: Over 48.5: ✔️ (59-23)
  4. Washington Wizards: Over 47.5: ✖️ (43-39)
  5. Milwaukee Bucks: Over 47.5: ✖️ (44-38)
  6. Miami Heat: Over 43.5: ✔️ (44-38)
  7. Charlotte Hornets: Over 42.5: ✖️ (36-46)
  8. Philadelphia 76ers: Under 41.5: ✖️ (52-30)
  9. Detroit Pistons: Over 38.5: ✔️ (39-43)
  10. Orlando Magic: Under 33.5: ✔️ (25-57)
  11. Indiana Pacers: Under 31.5: ✖️ (48-34)
  12. New York Knicks: Under 30.5: ✔️ (29-53)
  13. Brooklyn Nets: Over 27.5: ✔️ (28-54)
  14. Atlanta Hawks: Over 25.5: ✖️ (24-58)
  15. Chicago Bulls: Under 22.5: ✖️ (27-55)
    Total record: 6-9

The lesson here? As always, don’t bet against Vegas. We made some nice calls, with our “over” picks on the Raptors, Trail Blazers, Jazz, and Pelicans turning out particularly well. But we were way off on several other teams — the Grizzlies missed their “over” projection by 16 games, while the Pacers missed going “under” 31.5 wins by a staggering 17 games. In total, we had a 12-18 record on over/under predictions.

So our overall results weren’t great, but did our “best bets” do any better? Let’s take a look. These were the five predictions that received the largest share of the vote:

  1. Orlando Magic: Under 33.5 (75.24%): ✔️
  2. Oklahoma City Thunder: Over 50.5 (71.77%): ✖️
  3. Washington Wizards: Over 47.5 (71.29%): ✖️
  4. Cleveland Cavaliers: Over 53.5 (68.82%): ✖️
  5. San Antonio Spurs: Over 54.5 (67.74%): ✖️

Our Magic pick looks good, but our optimism for the Thunder, Wizards, Cavs, and Spurs went unrewarded. Injuries played some part in Washington and San Antonio falling short of their projections, with John Wall and Kawhi Leonard missing significant time. But Cleveland and Oklahoma City were mostly just too inconsistent over the course of the season to reach their projected win totals.

2017/18 NBA Over/Unders: Recap

Over the last couple months, we’ve been going through each of the NBA’s 30 teams, posting polls asking how many games each club will win this season. Using projections from professional oddsmakers, we’ve had you vote on whether each team will go over or under a given win total, from the Warriors (67.5) all the way through the Bulls (22.5).

Here are the full results of those votes:

Western Conference:

  1. Golden State Warriors: Over 67.5 (53.57%)
  2. Houston Rockets: Over 55.5 (65.57%)
  3. San Antonio Spurs: Over 54.5 (67.74%)
  4. Oklahoma City Thunder: Over 50.5 (71.77%)
  5. Minnesota Timberwolves: Over 48.5 (55.69%)
  6. Denver Nuggets: Under 45.5 (50.44%)

  11. Memphis Grizzlies: Over 37.5 (53.43%)
  12. Dallas Mavericks: Under 35.5 (54.95%)
  13. Los Angeles Lakers: Over 33.5 (50.4%)
  14. Phoenix Suns: Over 28.5 (50.41%)
  15. Sacramento Kings: Over 27.5 (56.18%)

Eastern Conference:

  1. Boston Celtics: Over 55.5 (63.5%)
  2. Cleveland Cavaliers: Over 53.5 (68.82%)

  4. Washington Wizards: Over 47.5 (71.29%)
  5. Milwaukee Bucks: Over 47.5 (63.88%)
  6. Miami Heat: Over 43.5 (55.39%)
  7. Charlotte Hornets: Over 42.5 (51.07%)
  8. Philadelphia 76ers: Under 41.5 (53.37%)
  9. Detroit Pistons: Over 38.5 (51.95%)
  10. Orlando Magic: Under 33.5 (75.24%)
  11. Indiana Pacers: Under 31.5 (54.85%)
  12. New York Knicks: Under 30.5 (57.87%)
  13. Brooklyn Nets: Over 27.5 (66.33%)
  14. Atlanta Hawks: Over 25.5 (51.44%)
  15. Chicago Bulls: Under 22.5 (50.08%)

As those results show, our readers as a group were generally bullish on most teams, with the “over” winning out 23 teams compared to just seven for the “under.” That’s not technically impossible, but it might make sense to adjust the vote totals downward by a few percentage points to get a more even view of the coming season.

Here are the five “over” bets that received the largest vote shares:

  1. Oklahoma City Thunder: Over 50.5 (71.77%)
  2. Washington Wizards: Over 47.5 (71.29%)
  3. Cleveland Cavaliers: Over 53.5 (68.82%)
  4. San Antonio Spurs: Over 54.5 (67.74%)
  5. Brooklyn Nets: Over 27.5 (66.33%)

Here are the five “under” bets that received the largest vote shares:

  1. Orlando Magic: Under 33.5 (75.24%)
  2. New York Knicks: Under 30.5 (57.87%)
  3. Dallas Mavericks: Under 35.5 (54.95%)
  4. Indiana Pacers: Under 31.5 (54.85%)
  5. Philadelphia 76ers: Under 41.5 (53.37%)

Poll: Chicago Bulls’ 2017/18 Win Total

The Bulls didn’t have a great 2016/17 season, but the team did manage to grind its way to a 41-41 record, and then took a 2-0 lead in the first round over the Celtics before Rajon Rondo suffered a season-ending injury and the tide turned.

That opening-round loss was the first in a series of events that turned the Bulls from an inconsistent .500 team to a club expected to lose more games than any other NBA team in 2017/18. Rondo is gone. Dwyane Wade is gone. And most notably, Jimmy Butler is gone.

The Bulls’ package for Butler – widely panned at the time of the trade – may work out for the team in the long run, but Lauri Markkanen is a rookie, Kris Dunn is a second-year point guard coming off a poor rookie season, and Zach LaVine will be sidelined to start the season as he continues to recover from an ACL injury. The trio is unlikely to have a significant impact in 2017/18.

There are a few other interesting pieces on the Chicago roster, including newly re-signed power forwards Nikola Mirotic and Cristiano Felicio. But a starting lineup that currently features Jerian Grant, Justin Holiday, Paul Zipser, Mirotic, and Robin Lopez won’t inspire much fear in the hearts of opponents.

Oddsmakers’ expectations for the Bulls are low, with offshore betting site Bovada putting the team’s over/under at just 22 wins. We’ll bump that up by a half-game for the purposes of our poll in order to avoid a whole number.

What do you think? Are the Bulls headed for their first 60-loss season since the post-Michael Jordan years in the early 2000s, or can the club get to 23 wins even after overhauling its roster this offseason? Vote below and jump into the comment section to share your thoughts!
