FEBRUARY 17, 5:56pm: Free agent forward Jeff Green has agreed to sign with the Rockets, Tim MacMahon of ESPN tweets. Green was waived by the Jazz earlier this season.
Green, 33, has bounced around the NBA in recent years, spending time with seven franchises in the past six seasons. While he has been a regular rotation player and occasional starter for every team he has played for, he was off to a slow start in Utah, averaging career lows in PPG (7.8), RPG (2.7), MPG (18.4), FG% (.385), and a handful of other categories. The Jazz let him go in order to sign a younger player, Rayjon Tucker.
With Green joining the fold and DeMarre Carroll expected to sign with the club once he clears waivers, the Rockets will have a full roster as well as fortifying their frontcourt. By adding two forwards rather than a center, Houston is clearly embracing small ball. The club has utilized P.J. Tucker in the middle in recent games since trading traditional center Clint Capela.
Green signed a one year, $2.56MM contract with Jazz last summer. If he signs a minimum-salary, rest-of-season deal with the Rockets, it would fall below $1.4MM, eliminating set-off and allowing Green to double-dip from Utah and Houston, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Twitter link). That would push his total salary for the season to $3.1MM, Marks adds.

A couple of buyout journeyman is not deep impact.
Rivers has been solid all year, Gordon is a 6th man of the year candidate for a few years. Carroll and Green are proven good role players. Carroll a career 9 and 3 guy and Green a career 13 and 4 guy. Sefo has been alright this year and McLemore is having a real improved year.

The Jazz didn’t even buy him out. They just flat cut him and we’re willing to eat his salary to let him go.
There’s certainly a reason why Jeff Green has been in seven franchises in the last six years. I wouldn’t bet he sticks around after one or two 10-day contracts. As for Carroll, I wouldn’t be too excited either about a guy who doesn’t get any minutes in a team that is not stacked with talent at the forward positions.
They didn’t have to buy him out, he had a minimum salary.
They let him go for nothing to make room for Rayjon Tucker. Frankly, that says it all.
Jeff Green probably won’t even play a single minute for the Rockets, unless it’s in garbage time. They had to sign him to a 10-day contract to reach the minimum roster limit and once Carroll joins the team they will likely let Green walk after 10 days.
Making room for younger talent. Green can still ball.

What is up with hartenstein ? I thought he was playing pretty well when he got minutes. Why all of a sudden he is the 4th string center ?
He’s still young (22 in May) but very inexperienced. Hopefully he can get more playing time in the G-League and work on his 3-point shot. If he can develop a dependable shot from outside the arc, he will become very valuable in the Rockets scheme.

Maybe part of the Harden deal was that we would vacate all centers from the roster by 2020. No wonder the price was too good to be true.
