Sixers Sign Dwight Howard To One-Year Deal

NOVEMBER 21: The Sixers have officially announced the signing of Howard, confirming the move in a press release. Because it’s a minimum-salary deal, it can be completed during free agency’s moratorium period.

NOVEMBER 20: The Sixers and Dwight Howard have reached an agreement on a one-year contract, agent Charles Briscoe tells Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).

Word of Howard’s agreement with Philadelphia comes shortly after the veteran center published a tweet saying that he would be returning to the Lakers. He quickly deleted that tweet, with Charania reporting at the time that Howard was still mulling his options. Now it appears he’ll head east after winning a title in Los Angeles.

Howard will presumably be the primary backup for Joel Embiid in Philadelphia. He’ll receive the veteran’s minimum of $2.6MM, though the cap hit for the Sixers will be just $1.6MM. The contract is guaranteed, according to The Athletic’s David Aldridge (Twitter link). Last season, Howard signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Lakers and worked his way into their good graces.

Howard will be playing for seventh team in his 17th season. He got steady minutes off the bench with Los Angeles, appearing in 69 regular-season games while averaging 7.5 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 1.1 BPG in 18.9 MPG. He also saw action in 18 of the Lakers’ postseason games, averaging 5.8 PPG and 4.6 RPG.

He can give them good back up C minutes and some rest for Embiid(if he needs a game off).

Based on Embiid’s health so far…then I’d say Howard will end up with more minutes then he probably really wants.

So this is the type of signing that a competent management team makes. Dwight Howard for the minimum vs Al Horford for an albatross contract.

Morey cleaned up Elton Brand’s mess in a span of a few weeks. The SIXERS are in a much better direction now.

Morey’s cleaning-up the mess, gotta make space for his own future mess. Lol.

Agree, nice work from Philly for 2021 with the re-vamp – Many were thinking it would take the trade of a star, I think they worked the fringes well enough to give 21 a go at it now

22-23 greatly benefit as well and only 1 1st gone ? And they held onto thybull too boot- Tremendous job

I think it went like this-

Dwight- Hey I just won a ring for ya – Gimme some money (x-figure)!

Rob – We cant pay you that much

Dwight- Ill show you ill go get the vet min somewhere else!

Then ofc, bc its Dwight he had to fumble his thumbs on Twitter for an hr making it more riddic-

Howard was solid for the Lakers, but also a bonehead in general, consistently committing stupid fouls. They could do better, but he did well in his second stint with the Lakers and is probably a solid pickup for the Sixers. The Lakers should be looking to upgrade, anyway.

Sixers were doing well until they inked a guy who can’t shoot!

As a Sixers fan I like this move. Dwight is cheap firstly, he’s a future HOF player and he’s a great role player.
Now he can play off the bench behind Joel Embiid and help him improve his defence to being the best in the league.

Dwight even if you don’t like him is at minimum a solid back up centre.

    Career facts:
Dwight has a ring, is an 8 time all star, 5 time all nba first team, 8 all nba teams, 3 consecutive defensive player of the years, 5 all defensive teams, 5 time rebounding leader and two time block leader.

If he was going to accept the minimum, why wouldn’t he stay in LA? I don’t get it, from Howard’s perspective.

He probably just got emo about Lakes not offering more than the min –

You have to remember we are talking about a 5th grade brain here

I thought Heat was best place for him. Still he’s a solid backup for any team. At minimum you can’t go wrong.
