The Knicks have played their final game of the season after losing Game 6 to the Pacers on Saturday. Now come the questions. But according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the team should be wary of overreacting to the loss, just as the Pacers were when they lost last year’s Eastern Conference Finals to the Celtics.
Marks points to an interview with owner James Dolan earlier this season on Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart‘s Roommates podcast.
“You really have to do the fundamentals, the basics. You’ve got to build a team. You’ve got to build an organization. There is no waving a wand over a team and all of a sudden it makes it a great team,” Dolan said at the time.
The question is whether that will hold true for a team with some real areas of concern on its roster and very limited avenues to address them. The Knicks’ entire bench outside of Mitchell Robinson and Miles McBride are free agents, with team options on P.J. Tucker and rookie center Ariel Hukporti. They will have access to the $5.7MM taxpayer mid-level exception, but using it will trigger a hard cap at the second apron. The rest of the much-needed depth would have to be filled out using minimum-salary contracts, the draft (New York holds only the No. 50 overall pick), and limited trade tools.
Marks points to Robinson’s $13MM expiring salary as a potential trade chip if the Knicks decide to make a bigger move, but they also only have one movable first-rounder (the Wizards’ 2026 top-eight protected pick), along with a few potential pick swaps, to include in a deal.
Finally, the Knicks will have Mikal Bridges‘ extension to decide on. A new deal for Bridges would kick in for 2026, so it doesn’t impact this summer’s salary situation. Karl-Anthony Towns is also extension-eligible, though with three years left on his current contract, it’s a less pressing concern.
We have more from the Knicks:
- Given the reluctance of Knicks leadership to speak openly or address the media, parsing the next steps forward is something akin to reading the tea leaves, writes Steve Popper of Newsday. He points to president of basketball operations Leon Rose‘s patience in building this roster, though the Towns and Bridges trades seemed to signal a willingness to be more aggressive. Popper also points to the same Dolan interview referenced by Marks, in which the reclusive owner said, “[Rose] has done a good job of lining up the contracts. So this isn’t our only season. So we’re going to play a bunch of seasons together. You take a look at teams like Boston that have played together. They get to draw off something that they built off that period of time. And for this team, that’s really the challenge today, going into the playoffs. It’s to build that inside of the team, something that we can draw on.”
- While reports about the team’s frustrations with Towns’ defense began circulating moments after the Knicks’ season ended, Brunson’s praised Towns prior to Game 6 for how he was able to fight through multiple playoff injuries to stay active and involved in the series. “I have the utmost respect for him and the way he’s been able to play throughout this entire season and playoffs,” Brunson said, per Jared Schwartz of the New York Post. Despite a lingering knee injury, Towns finished the series with averages of 24.8 points and 12.2 rebounds while shooting 36.7% from three on five attempts per game.
- While it could be a challenging offseason for the Knicks, Rose has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to how to keep taking the right steps forward as an organization, writes the New York Post’s Mike Vaccaro. Vaccaro says that while Rose’s track record spearheading the Knicks isn’t impeccable — after all, whose is? — it has come pretty close, as has his ability to pivot in the rare moments he does make mistakes, such as the summer of 2021 when he built the offseason around signing Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker. Vaccaro suggests the club would benefit from acquiring a starting-caliber player who could shift energizer bunny Hart back to the role he was meant to play, as the team’s sixth man. However, he cautions that any such move would need to be for a player who can defend at a high level, given the limitations to the Brunson and Towns defensive tandem. Rose has earned that benefit of the doubt, Vaccaro writes, but his test starts now.
Get what you can for KAT and retool…
Then get a new coach…
New coach I’m ok with. No doubt that Carlisle made better adjustments during the series.
Why would they rebuild though after getting to game 6 of the ECF and it looking like Boston will take a step back next year? Unless one of Cleveland, Orlando or Detroit makes a huge move, the Knicks, Cavs and Pacers should be the favourites to come out of the East.
I mean they were 2 wins away from the NBA finals, but you’re right, they should definitely tear it down and start again…
Celtics were in the same spot and they made big changes and won a ring.
Without looking it up, I would assume that those Celtics were in a better position to make ‘big changes’. Knicks are fairly limited in what they can do unless they make a crazy trade. Brunson and KAT are their two best players. Boston didn’t trade Tatum or Brown.
They traded away Smart, Williams and Brogdon, three of their top 7 rotation players, because Stevens thought what they had didn’t work, despite making the finals and ECF.
That’s not the same as trading KAT, which is what Scarlett suggested. KAT is their second best player. The three “top 7 rotation players” Boston traded were role players. Way different. But also, Knicks are limited here with what they can do.
Its amazing how many people have no clue and cant read…
Making the Eastern finals is a lot easier than beating the western team in the finals…
Retool is what the Celtics did… The Celtics didnt have to move a giant KAT sized problem…
Improve flopping skills
Mayb ask ben stiller or timothee chalamet for acting lessons
Jalen Brunson needs to learn how to play collectivelly. Felt like he was contaminated by Luka’s ball dominance while he was in Dallas.
There were so many possessions where he wasted like 15 seconds dribbling from one side to the other without ever passing.
Brunson is a super skilled player, but he has to stop individualizing the game so much. If he wasnt benched in the 4th quarter of game 3, they would have lost it. They were very clearly playing better without him.
8 second left on the 24 and let’s see what brunson decides to do? I don’t think Hart is a starter in this league, although he does and KAT can’t get out of his own way on defense but was definitely knicked up. Their bench was non existent and I laugh when I read they weren’t suppose to be there. Awful big moves and lots of cheese spent last off season to not suppose to be there. The knickerbockers have little wiggle room to fix a very flawed roster. IMO.
I agree. Hart is definitely not starter material. 6’4 sixth man at best
Um, no. Brunson = unstoppable.
When he shoots 13 -35 or 22- 42 or 16-31 or 8-29 mute yourself.
Brunson is in the same bracket as a Kyrie Irving to me. Really good score first point guard that is probably best served as your teams top scorer but playing off of a better all round player.
No shame in it at all it’s just a skillset thing that’ll lead to more success.
KAT again to me is a luxury you can’t afford. He’s a weak side kick as a second option in comparison LeBron and Kyrie, Curry and KD, etc he’s more like a really really good 3.
Look at the Celtics team they have Tatum Brown Holiday KP White, KAT is a Holiday/KP third option being tasked with being the 2.
Same with Bridges more of a 4 than a 3.
So because of these reason Bridges and KAT would be the guys I’d look to move for a legit top top player. But it’s hard cause you’ve just traded for them both. So I guess it makes more sense to get good depth 5-10 on the roster and try run it back again next year.
It’s obviously easier said then done but look at the other teams Thunder have SGA (better than Brunson) then Chet and JDub (sorta on par with a KAT and Bridges) but have plenty of good depth.
Spurs have Wemby (again better than Brunson) plus Fox then the second overall pick and a young team on the rise.
NBA is a really tough league and it’s hard to win without that top 5 level player.
Sixers have Embiid and have struggled to years to get the right combination of good sidekicks and depth (Butler, Harden, Simmons, etc)
Knicks run the risk of being exactly like them without that top guy but in saying that the Pacers are in the final and they don’t have that they just have the right depth and coaching
No team is really willing to give up that player Giannas is one guy on the market but I don’t think you have the right assets.
The alternative is getting him young and developing him. Cooper Flagg if you could trade for him that would be amazing and he could be that guy. Otherwise and definitely an unpopular opinion but Zion Williamson could still be that guy and his value is at an all time low.
Try your luck, Zion and Reeves for Mikal and Josh.
Brunson … OG Zion KAT
McBride Reeves … … Robinson
Vet min SG like say Luke Kennard if he takes a discount and fill out the depth with TJ Warren and what not.
One reason Brunson has the ball all the time is because no one in the starting lineup can dribble other than him. OG should never be allowed to dribble. Hart is too basic and easy to steal and Bridges, while a good dribbler, tends to make bad passes while in the air.
“You really have to do the fundamentals, the basics. You’ve got to build a team. You’ve got to build an organization. There is no waving a wand over a team and all of a sudden it makes it a great team,” Dolan said at the time.”
This is hilarious coming from the man responsible for keeping the Knicks down for years.
This team was built this year. They will have cap issues. So the best move they have is a trade. The four rookies on the bench have to grow up. KD might be their best move. If it can get done. Pretty much straight up for Towns. Imo the draft will be telling for a lot of teams. I expect a few trades to go down. Then Knicks will have a clearer vision.
I agree that they should kick the tires on a KD trade ……. Brunson’s work load isn’t sustainable, he looks absolutely gassed by the end of most games – though this isn’t a surprise, Thibs and all.
KAT for KD straight up would be a crazy trade. I don’t know if I would have the balls to even consider that.
You know why I would. Gets Hart back to Bench. And like @mike.honcho said it takes the ball off Brunson some. Mitch starting at C. And Hukporti can back him up. They are very similar players. The repercussions are KD s age. You gotta know he has 2-3 yrs. Who would trade for Towns.

KD for KAT…
Suns are crazy… It could work…
Probably the best shot at getting value back on KAT as the rest of the league has now seen him as the Trae Young of centres…
Move on from the ceiling-limited Thibs and run it back with a coach more adept at running an offense. Only make a big change if the right opportunity comes along. But doing absolutely nothing would be a mistake.
Speaking of Thibs, this situation illustrates one of the concerns I had with his initial hiring. When you bring in a high floor, low ceiling coach as part of a turnaround, the politics of the NBA makes it hard to move on from them when the time comes to take that next step.
I know the fans may not be thrilled with such a move and Thibs arguably doesn’t deserve it, but the team doesn’t have a lot of tools in its upgrade box and this is one of the most obvious levers to pull. But if history is any indication, the Knicks will probably let him go a year or two late, at which point their best opportunities for a championship may have passed.
Sometimes when a team comes close and fails, changing the coach is the right move. But, in those cases, there is generally some support among the players for such a move. Brunson would raise holy hell. I can’t see it happening, not this off-season.
Thibs has been the best thing in yrs here. Brunson has been here three yrs. OG, Towns, Bridges one year. Coaching is not the big issue. The bench is thin cause of The trades. Not cause of coaching. Towns is the biggest decision to me. Defensively he hurts the team. And with Brunson defensively they are not the best match.

The bench is only an issue because of the coaching issue…
Just because Dolan has been a completely useless owner and hired trash that makes Thibs look good doesnt mean Thibs is a title winning coach…
Dolan is gone lol. This is first time he has not meddled with team. This is Rose and Thibs only. The way it should be. Both are responsible for bench. Which was gone with the trades they made. And waiting on Mitch to come back. This team is still a work in progress. And Towns the bench have to be addressed.
Go back through the last few champions, and consider OKC and Indy this year. All of them won with the same core that had flamed out a season or two before.
What they all have in common is patience.
In the apron era, keeping a contending core together for an off-season is a luxury. Let’s enjoy it and let these guys learn each other during training camp, especially the new starting lineup (Mitch with Towns is still very new). Give it a shot during Boston’s gap year. Then if we come up short again we can start chopping heads.
Again, Boston traded away, Smart, Williams and Brogdon, three of their top 7 rotation players, the year before they won.
None of those guys were in Boston’s top three (Tatum, Brown, and White). “Top 7 rotation players” for the Knicks would mean trading, like, Bridges, Hart, and McBride.
Thats the main difference between that Celtics team and this Knicks team…
The stars werent the problem for the Celtics…
The Knicks have KAT and no one on Tatums or Browns level…
