Pacers Sign Lance Stephenson

MARCH 30, 2:31pm: The Pacers have officially signed Stephenson, the team announced today in a press release.

“We’re very happy to have Lance back as part of our team,” Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird said in a statement. “We always knew he wanted to come back here, and we feel now is the right time, not only for the rest of this season, but moving forward. We look forward to having a long relationship with him, because we know what he can bring to our franchise, both on and off the court.”

MARCH 29, 11:54am: The Pacers and Stephenson are in agreement on a three-year, $12MM deal, reports Chris Haynes of ESPN.com (via Twitter). According to Haynes, the first two years are guaranteed, while the third is a team option. Adam Zagoria was the first to report the agreement between the two sides, as noted below.

11:35am: The Pacers are working on a deal to bring Lance Stephenson back to Indiana, league sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical (Twitter link). Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog indicates that the two sides have already finalized a three-year deal with a player option in year three, though the team has yet to confirm anything.

The Pacers opened up a spot on their roster today when they waived veteran guard Rodney Stuckey. With Al Jefferson and Glenn Robinson III also on the shelf, Indiana has some holes in its rotation, opening the door for a player like Stephenson to return to the club. While the coaching staff isn’t the same one that worked with Stephenson during his first stint with the Pacers, the front office is familiar with him.

Stephenson, 26, enjoyed a breakout season for the Pacers in 2013/14, averaging 13.8 PPG, 7.2 RPG, and 4.6 APG. However, he has bounced around the league since then and hasn’t delivered on the promise he showed during his final year in Indiana.

After playing for the Hornets, Clippers, and Grizzlies in previous years, Stephenson started this season with the Pelicans, but was waived after suffering a groin injury. The veteran swingman later caught on with the Timberwolves on a pair of 10-day deals, though his stint in Minnesota was derailed by injuries as well. As of mid-March, the Wolves were willing to let him go as he continued to deal with an ankle issue.

Assuming the Pacers and Stephenson do finalize a multiyear deal, the Pacers have the flexibility to offer more than two years and more than the minimum salary, since they remain under the cap. As our Salary Cap Snapshot shows, Indiana has more than $4MM in cap room available. Typically, veteran free agents who sign late in the season prefer one-year contracts so that they can return to the open market in the summer, but that extra cap space gives the Pacers the flexibility to make a multiyear deal worth Stephenson’s while.

Although Stephenson signed with the Wolves after March 1, he’ll retain his playoff eligibility for Indiana, since his deal with Minnesota was a 10-day pact.

Jarell Eddie Gets Second 10-Day Deal From Suns

The Suns have signed swingman Jarell Eddie to a second 10-day contract, the team announced on its website.

Eddie, who originally signed with the Suns March 19th, has appeared in five games, averaging 4.8 points in 12.5 minutes per night. He posted a career best 13 points in a March 19th game against the Pistons.

The Suns are the third NBA opportunity for Eddie, who played 26 games last season for the Wizards and signed a 10-day deal with the Hawks in 2015 but didn’t see any game action. He has spent most of the past three years in the D-League, and played for Windy City before coming to Phoenix.

The contract Eddie signed today will run through April 7th. The Suns will have two games remaining after that and must decide whether to release him or give him a longer deal.

Pelicans Re-Sign Quinn Cook

4:01pm: The Pelicans have signed Cook to a second 10-day contract, the team confirmed today (via Twitter).

10:52am: Quinn Cook‘s first 10-day contract with the Pelicans expired overnight, but the rookie guard will receive a second 10-day deal from the team, according to Chris Haynes of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Assuming the new contract is finalized before tonight’s game against Dallas, it will expire at the end of day on April 7.

Cook, who turned 24 last Thursday, made his NBA debut last month with the Mavericks, but wasn’t retained by Dallas and eventually made his way back to the Pelicans. The former Duke Blue Devil spent training camp and the preseason with New Orleans last fall, though he didn’t initially make the cut for the team’s regular season roster.

In his latest stint with the Pelicans, Cook’s playing time has been limited — he has averaged 1.0 PPG and 0.7 APG in three games (2.7 MPG) for New Orleans. Cook’s numbers in five games with Dallas were a little better (5.4 PPG, 2.4 APG), and he excelled in D-League play earlier this season, averaging 26.0 PPG and 6.7 APG in 39 contests for the Canton Charge.

Once Cook’s second 10-day deal with New Orleans expires, the club will have to decide whether to retain him for the rest of the season. The Pelicans also continue to carry an open spot on their 15-man roster, so they have the flexibility to add another new player at some point down the stretch.

NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 3/29/17

Here are Wednesday’s D-League assignments and recalls from around the NBA:

Point guard Cameron Payne is back with the Bulls, having been recalled from the D-League following Windy City’s win on Tuesday, the club announced today in a press release. Payne was instrumental in last night’s win, scoring a team-high 20 points to go along with nine assists, five rebounds, and five steals.
The Rockets have sent Troy Williams and Isaiah Taylor to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, according to Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle, who notes (via Twitter) that rookie big man Chinanu Onuaku will stay on the NBA roster to start the team’s road trip.
The Raptors have recalled Bruno Caboclo and Pascal Siakam from their D-League affiliate, the team announced today (via Twitter). Neither the Raptors nor the Raptors 905 are in action until Thursday, so we’ll see if the duo sticks with the NBA club for that game.

Pacers Waive Rodney Stuckey

11:31am: The Pacers have officially waived Stuckey, the team announced today in a press release.

9:38am: The Pacers are waiving injured guard Rodney Stuckey, reports Shams Charania of The Vertical (via Twitter). The news comes on the heels of Stuckey suffering a left patellar tendon strain, which is expected to sideline him for four to six weeks.

Stuckey’s contract situation was a motivating factor for the Pacers here, since he had an unusual option for the 2017/18 season. In most cases, player options represent guaranteed money (unless the player opts out), but Stuckey’s $7MM player option for next year was more of a mutual option. As Charania notes, by waiving the veteran guard prior to April 10, Indiana won’t be on the hook for any of his salary for 2017/18.

While Stuckey should be ready to return to action by the end of April or start of May, he’s unlikely to land with another team this season, so he could get a head start on free agency for next year, assuming he clears waivers. If he’s formally waived today, the former first-round pick would clear waivers on Friday.

Stuckey, who will turn 31 next month, is coming off perhaps his worst NBA season. In 39 games, he averaged 7.2 PPG and shot just 37.3% from the field — both marks are career-lows. Even if he had stayed healthy, Stuckey may have been a candidate to be cut before season’s end, in order to get the Pacers off the hook for next year’s salary.

With Stuckey headed to the waiver wire, the Pacers will open up a spot on their roster at a time when they could use some added depth. Regular rotation players Al Jefferson and Glenn Robinson III are also on the shelf with injuries as Indiana makes a late-season push to clinch a playoff spot. The team will have the opportunity to add someone new to its roster on either a 10-day contract or a rest-of-season deal.

Mavs Re-Sign Jarrod Uthoff, Part With Manny Harris

10:55am: The Mavericks have officially announced their new deal with Uthoff. It’s a multiyear pact, according to the team, which probably means next season will be non-guaranteed, as I speculated below.

10:14am: Two players on their second 10-day contracts with the Mavericks saw those deals expire overnight, and one of the two will be sticking with the club. According to ESPN’s Marc Stein (via Twitter), the Mavs intend to sign Jarrod Uthoff to a rest-of-season contract. However, Manny Harris will return to Dallas’ D-League affiliate, the Texas Legends.

Uthoff, who will turn 24 this spring, saw very limited action in just two games with the Mavericks, and has yet to score his first NBA point. Still, the team apparently liked what it saw from Uthoff in practice and wants to keep him in Dallas. Although Stein doesn’t offer any specific contract details, I imagine Uthoff’s new contract will include a non-guaranteed salary for 2017/18, giving the Mavs to keep the 6’9″ forward at the minimum salary next season.

As for Harris, the 27-year-old saw a little more action than Uthoff during his 20 days in Dallas, averaging 2.0 PPG and 2.3 RPG in four contests (6.3 MPG). His return to the D-League will be a boost for the Legends — he had been averaging 26.0 PPG and 7.6 RPG for the Mavs’ affiliate.

With Uthoff returning and Harris on his way out, the Mavs will have one open spot on their 15-man roster, so they could take a flier on another 10-day prospect.

The Knicks have assigned Maurice Ndour, Marshall Plumlee and Chasson Randle to the Westchester Knicks, according to the team’s Twitter feed. Each of the three players saw one minute of NBA action on Monday in New York’s win over Detroit.
The Bulls have assigned Cameron Payne to the Windy City Bulls, according to a team press release. Payne, who was sent to Chicago in the Taj Gibson deal, has seen 140 minutes with the NBA club since arriving in town.

NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 3/27/17

The Sixers recalled Tiago Splitter from the Delaware 87ers, according to the team’s website. Splitter was acquired by Philadelphia in the Ersan Ilyasova trade at this year’s trade deadline.
The Raptors have recalled Bruno Caboclo from their D-League affiliate, the Raptors 905, per the team’s Twitter feed. Caboclo has played a total of 89 NBA minutes since being selected with the 20th pick in the 2014 draft.
The Spurs have recalled Davis Bertans and Bryn Forbes from the Austin Spurs, according to the team’s website. Both players were sent down to the D-League on Sunday.

The Pistons have recalled Henry Ellenson from their D-League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive, Rod Beard of The Detroit News tweets. Beard notes that the rookie will be available for Detroit’s matchup with the Knicks on Monday.
The Cavaliers have assigned Larry Sanders to the Canton Charge, per Sam Amico of Amico Hoops (Twitter link). Sanders has only seen two minutes of action for Cleveland this season.
The Spurs have assigned Davis Bertans and Bryn Forbes to the Austin Spurs, according to the team’s website. Bertans has appeared in three games for San Antonio’s D-League affiliate, while Forbes has seen action in 18 contests.

10:22pm:

The Warriors recalled forward Kevon Looney from their D-League affiliate earlier today, the team announced in a press release. Looney, who put up 10 points and eight boards in just 13 minutes for Santa Cruz on Thursday night, is back with Golden State for tonight’s game against Sacramento.

11:50am:

The Bulls recalled Cameron Payne from Windy City, the team announced via press release. Payne has made nine NBA appearances since being acquired from OKC, scoring 54 points on 33.9% shooting in that span. In his most recent D-League stop, Payne scored 14 points with eight assists and seven rebounds in a win over the Iowa Energy.
