Former Warriors head of basketball operations Bob Myers is leaving his position as an ESPN analyst for a full-time role at Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, the company that owns the Sixers and other sports franchises, per a press release.
According to the announcement, Myers’ goal in his new job will be “maximizing opportunities and bolstering processes across HBSE’s portfolio of sports properties,” as well as supporting Josh Harris, the company’s co-founder and the Sixers’ co-governor.
In addition to the 76ers, HBSE owns the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and Crystal Palace F.C. in the Premier League. Harris is also the managing partner of the NFL’s Washington Commanders.
“Our goal has been to hire, grow, and retain the best and brightest executives in the world and we are a stronger, more dynamic organization with the addition of Bob Myers,” Harris and HBSE co-founder David Blitzer said in a statement. “His experience as an architect of championship teams will complement our existing leadership structure, while also allowing HBSE to maximize opportunities across our portfolio. We’re excited to have Bob continue his storied career here at HBSE.”
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the hiring won’t affect the front office hierarchy for any of the teams controlled by HBSE. Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, for instance, will continue to report to team ownership.
While it sounds as if Myers will be focused on more big-picture business decisions as opposed to being involved in basketball operations, it’s still notable that he’ll be working with the ownership group. There was some speculation about Morey’s job security last season as the Sixers posted a disappointing 24-58 record after being considered one of the East’s top teams entering the year. However, the club opted not to make a front office change and Morey remains the team’s top basketball decision-maker.
Myers, who worked as an agent before being hired as an assistant general manager by the Warriors in 2011, was promoted to GM in 2012 and led the team to four championships in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. He stepped down from his position in Golden State’s front office in 2023 and was replaced by Mike Dunleavy Jr.
Good, he was an absolute bore on the shows he was on and ESPN is bad enough already.
ESPN reporting that Myers got injured as soon as he signed the contract.
Don’t get too excited 76er fans. He got way too much credit for teh warriors run.
That’s why no one was lined up to hire him as a GM. Notice this new job is totally outside of roster building and personnel and the draft. Definitely areas where Bob Myers sucked.
Sure, he got some veterans to come aboard as ring chasers like David West Maurice Spieghts Zaza.., guys like that, but his draft skills were horrendous.
Exactly what happened. It was West who darfted most of the best players not him. MDJ has done a great job with the picks he has drafted on. MDJ has to maneuver a cap and Bob never had to do that.
You think there wasn’t a cap when Myers was there?
lacob allowed Bob to go way over the cap. Lacob paid the tax on it but now with teh new CBA its more than a tax but your ability to sign free agents. So cap rules are way different now.
Well, he’s allowed Dunleavy to go further over the cap than Myers ever did, so there’s that. The big change is the new second apron and the Warriors are right up against it, with the second highest payroll in the league. It’s not like Lacob has clamped down on spending.
compared to previous years warriors are watching teh cap more closely. MDJ was on a inteerview said he will not go over teh 2nd apron. Why Curry will be released and resigned at a later date so they can stay under the 2nd.
xdrta, I actually thought the Warriors were trying to stay a little more cap friendly the last couple of years? If I’m wrong then thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
But I thought the era of five or so years ago, the Warriors were way over the cap and their tax was practically the same as their payroll which doubled their overall roster expenses? But if that’s wrong then I am not remembering it correctly.
The only team with a higher payroll is Cleveland.
The only team with a higher payroll today is Cleveland? Yes but look at the payroll of the Warriors today and the payroll of the Warriors in the championship years.
I take it you’re a Bob Meyers guy? That’s fine and in your opinion he did no wrong and was a stud. All good by me.
He was definitely part of the overall scheme. He has four rings in his pocket that’s for sure.
“did no wrong?” That’s quite a leap you make.
Look at their payrolls in the championship years? OK, only the last one when they got Durant did they rise as high as 2nd in the league. The other years ranged from 13th to 5th. What is your point, if you have one?
Wow, OK. I’ve got eight messages here.., figure it out.
Yay, Bob Meyers fan club !!
The Salary cap has been in place for many many years. I thought you knew that?
You’re OK with Jacob Evans Jordan Bell Allen Smilagic, Patrick Baldwin, Ryan Rollins, Damian Jones, Patrick McCaw… ?
rules are different now when other teams complained about the rich clubs having an advantage. You didn’t know teh new CBA changed the rules?
Well, since I read that West was responsible for everything, I guess he was responsible for those picks too.
Jerry West left a year or two after Mark Jackson was fired. He then was council for Steve Balmer and the Clippers for a few years.
Those crap drafts were all Bob Myers. He drafted “body” ahead of talent, thinking they would develop. Doesn’t always happen. It’s usually the way to go, but doesn’t work out quite often as well.
Actually, West was there for 3 years after Jackson left and, while both Myers and West were there, they drafted Klay and Draymond. We’ll give West credit for those. They also drafted Jenkins, Kuzmic, Ezeli, Jordan Bell, Damian Jones, and McCaw. Myers gets credit for those, of course. Barnes and Looney we’ll split the credit. That all sound right to you?
If you’re going to nitpick three years when I said one or two years about something 10 years ago, then good luck to you friend. Hope Bob Meyers Christmas party is a lot of fun this year.
Yikes, I’ve never had an argument go this sideways over something inconsequential as a guy who left the company a couple of years ago.
He did a nice job. Nice guy. Good negotiator. Lot of contacts on both side sides of the aisle. Couldn’t draft worth beans.
Not even a fan of Myers, just not a member of the “let’s worship Jerry West” club, that you seem president of.
I am absolutely the president of the worship Jerry West fan club. 100%. Write me down at the top of the list. No problem.
Why are you not on the list? You don’t think he was that great at running NBA franchises? Tell me why you think that way.
No one is saying Bob Myers was an idiot. He was pretty good at negotiating, and he coerced by-ins when Klay Thompson and Draymond Green took less money to sign as they watched Harrison Barnes walk out the door because he was unwilling to do so and went to Dallas.
He signed curry to a team friendly deal when Steph had the ankle issues. So he did a nice job, but couldn’t draft worth beans. Not a guy who teams are lining up to hire as GM, which was my initial point.
to me its like being the dodgers GM is he a great GM or is it because he has a unlimited spending amount. KD did not go to teh warriors because of Bob but because Green talked him into it. Bob best talent is he knows teh free agent game and can talk to players like they are friends.
Well, Myers did engineer the double sign-and-trade that allowed it to work. So at least he did something.
Calling Moody, JK and Podz great is a homer stretch…
Who said that? I must have missed it.
Per an in depth story in The Athletic, Kirk Lacob made the Wiseman pick, overriding Myers and Kerr’s desires to take Haliburton, and Kent Lacob personally scouted Nico Mannion and Smiley (“the next Dirk!”)… The bad drafts weren’t all Myers fault. ..
Any great run a franchise has. Like the Warriors did. Is always a combination of Ownership, FO, Coaching, Talent. West is a great talent evaluator. Meyers made the final decision. And he was smart enough to listen to West. Meyers drafted well just look it up. He also signed Livingston, Iggy, Speights, West, Barnosa, Payton, and KD. By the way he also drafted Barnes. A good GM listens to the people around him.
Funny how he gets the negative response. When this is obviously Kerrs team now. Its the system he wants. The players he wants ……. Plus Meyers signed Kerr to coach lol.
See no reason to hate on Meyers. He moved on. Did his job well.
Sixers need new eyes. Hopefully this means Morey is gone soon …..
@Al
I agree I don’t understand why he get Soo much hate. It’s a team effort building a championship. Matter of fact the guys who claim to build championship teams and then try to repeat the same process usually fail.. because it takes a team.
I wonder what happens to Morey. He is a terrible GM maybe this move was to help replace him after this season. Not sure you can survive the Paul George signing
Thats right lol. It’s not easy to repeat or stay on top for years. Takes plenty of good minds to do it. And he managed that.
Never liked Morey. He got lucky with Harden. And folks thought his analytics would change the game. He doesn’t build teams. He finds players and prays they win. He’s a counter doesn’t understand fit or chemistry.
Actually West was in charge of drafting under Bob. You can see the change in drafting once West left.
No one is going to deny West input arc. So why deny Meyers being the GM of this. He brought Kerr here. That alone is huge. Like I said. It’s not all one guy. It’s a combination and some luck. I get not licking him. But you can’t deny what happened under his watch.
I don’t know much about him. He was ok at espn for me. And his record as Warrior GM is solid. Why hate.
I know Sixers can use help. He has an opportunity there now.
All i said was don’t expect miracles from Bob. You get personal when somebody doesn’t praise anyone as the greatest ever. For a team to be a championship team it takes more than 1 person to acheive it. I never said I didn’t like him I said he was not perfect. I never mentioned ESPN. So what you did is took every negative thing posted here and blamed me for what others said.
100%. Myers was a huge part of the Warriors phenomenal success. Haters gonna hate but he along with other individuals brought four championships to the Bay Area. Amazing job Bob! Your laurels were earned.
Bob Myers arrived after the team was already assembled. Durant chose Golden State, had nothing to do with Bob. This guy gets way too much credit.
From the time Myers arrived the only players that were still there for the first championship team were Curry and David Lee. Hardly assembled. Myers may have had faults, but at least get some of the facts straight.
The Warriors went from a joke franchise to a Dynasty, and all of their fans seem to hate everyone responsible for it not named Steph.
Nobody mentions Joe Lacob either. He wrote the checks. I don’t understand all the “hate” for Lacob.
^ I can’t stand the popular use of the word “hate” today. It just feels wrong when writing that sentence. Why is a disagreement suddenly say someone “hates” something or someone? Ridiculous.
This. This is the blight of any successful team’s fan base. A bunch of Monday morning point guards who think they know better than the freaking geniuses who actually delivered them to the promised land. Where is the gratitude and respect? It is harder than it looks from the outside and you definitely need to get lucky as well.
Why do you call it hate to question somebody worth to the over all picture? There is many factors that went into making GSW the team that won 4 championships. Bob is credited with it but there was many more behinds the scene that did it.
Ok bro ….. that was good …..
So you think some other unnamed GM could have done better? Why does Myers get all the blame for bad draft choices and yet diminished credit for the rings? He and the people under him won four gd championships! They all deserve all the credit for that. But Bob more cause he was the gd GM.
There is a thin line between love and hate…
I know you’re joking because there’s: like, indifference, they’re pretty nice but keep me away from him, etc. There’s a huge fat line between love and hate.

Haha, love it !!!
Old school baby!
Like I have told you plenty times. Look up its meaning.
Not giving someone their due is hating.
Lying about someone’s achievements is hating .
Saying other people are responsible for his success is hating.
Criticizing or crying about someone cause he is leaving your team. Is hating . Like 80% of Warriors fans did Kuminga ……. and NOW he’s your guy.

the world according to Al. If it wasn’t for Thibs the Knicks don’t even make the playoffs. He is the only reason they made the playoffs. Had a team of average players and made them a championship team. Now Al you must agree with everything I said or you are a hater. i am expecting thumbs up and more praise about Thibs so go and give him all the glory for the Knicks last year and if you don’t you are a HATER….
That “street definition,” Angry Al. We know from history it’ll change after 10 years.
Cool will be hot then cold will be mean. Soon as I buy five pairs of skinny jeans, they’re going out of style on the kids are wearing baggy again.
Street definitions don’t count in the real world. Nice to know that’s the language you speak so no wonder I’m confused half the time by your comments.
All good though. I’m sure the audience here is mostly young so it’s on me. I get that.
Some things I agree with Al but if you do not see things 100% the way he sees it he calls people haters. I been taught to question all things. I see how people who don’t question things are easy marks.
This is a forum to talk basketball. We don’t all agree on all things. And this is the place to voice our opinions and discuss things.
It’s too bad we have a couple people who take it down a notch and call people names. Oh well, that’s the society we live in.
I think you do a better job than anyone at keeping the peace, not replying in like manner with insults, and you just voice your basketball opinions.
I love at arc. You’re the best at that. I try but I need to be better at it like you are.
there is 1 warrior fans that calls people names and its not a good look. I don’t expect people to agree with me because everyone here is just posting opinions. Just because you post something unfavorable about a player or coach does not mean they are haters. I know many people hate Draymond Green but that is their opinion. Its OK to disagree witha comment just people need to stop attacking teh person that made the comment.

The post mentions Ownership. FO, Coaches, Talent (players) ……. you only see what you want to see. Join the real world lol ……..
“ The street definition of “hating” means to ridicule, insult, or criticize someone unfairly, often driven by jealousy or anger. It’s a slang term used to describe putting someone down, whether in person or online, and can also refer to someone who “hates” on others’ success.”
Catch up LOL …….

People forget that Bob almost traded Curry.
I love this. Someone once said.,
“The only thing worse than being talked about.., is NOT being talked about”
I can admit that I’m not caught up on present day vernacular, but I did learn one term today in my research…,
“Living rent free.”
I appreciate the feedback. Thank you.
The beginning of the end for Morey
