Adonis Thomas

And-Ones: Sterling, Parker, Crawford

Attorneys for Donald Sterling will argue that wife Shelly Sterling exerted undue influence on one of the two doctors who examined Donald and declared him mentally incompetent, as Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com details. Donald’s mental competency is no longer on trial. Instead, the probate trial between the Sterlings will center on whether Shelly followed the rules of the Sterling family trust, according to Shelburne. Those rules required that two mental health experts submit letters to the effect that Donald was mentally incompetent before allowing Shelly to take full control of the trust, Shelburne writes. Shelly agreed to sell the Clippers in May to Steve Ballmer, claiming that she fully controlled the trust, but Donald is fighting the sale. Here’s more from around the league:

  • The Spurs kept Tony Parker through Monday, unsurprisingly, but doing so means his $3.5MM partial guarantee is now a fully guaranteed $12.5MM salary for 2014/15.
  • Jamal Crawford of the Clippers had his $1.5MM partial guarantee bumped to a full guarantee of $5.45MM when he remained on the roster through Monday.
  • Kosta Koufos remains on the Grizzlies, so his $500K partial guarantee is now a $3MM full guarantee.
  • Parker’s teammate Austin Daye is also still with the Spurs, so his $250K partial guarantee is a fully guaranteed minimum salary.
  • The Hornets kept Jeffery Taylor around, so his minimum salary went from non-guaranteed to fully guaranteed.
  • It appears as though the Magic are officially under the cap, according to Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders (Twitter link). That means Orlando loses access to a $6,077,280 trade exception it could have reaped from last week’s Arron Afflalo deal.
  • The Hawks didn’t give big man Gustavo Ayon a qualifying offer by Monday’s deadline, making him an unrestricted free agent, notes Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (Twitter link). There weren’t reports of qualifying offers to James Southerland of the Pelicans, Adonis Thomas of the Sixers and Bernard James of the Mavs, so presumably they’re all unrestricted free agents as well.
  • The Wolves hired Ryan Saunders as an assistant coach, the team announced (on Twitter). Saunders, the son of Wolves head coach/executive Flip Saunders, had served the last five seasons as a Wizards assistant.

Eastern Rumors: Arenas, Stephenson, Bucks

Gilbert Arenas reiterated on SiriusXM NBA Radio today that he’s still holding out hope for an NBA comeback, as USA Today’s Jeff Zillgitt tweets, and that echoes Arenas’ comments from December. The Magic are probably rooting for his return to the league, since that could allow them to use set-off rights to recoup a small portion of the millions they still owe him on his amnestied contract. While we wait to see if Agent Zero, still just 32 years old, makes it back to the Association, here’s more from the Eastern Conference:

  • Sean Deveney of The Sporting News heard from a GM around the beginning of February who expected Lance Stephenson to receive offers with eight-figure annual salaries, but an executive now tells Deveney that the soon-to-be free agent will probably command only $7-8MM a year.
  • Outgoing Bucks owner Herb Kohl borrowed money from the NBA a total of five times in 2009 and 2010 to help keep the team going, reports Rich Kirchen of the Milwaukee Business Journal. Kohl told Kirchen that he’s spent more than $100MM of his own money on the team during his nearly three decades of ownership.
  • Casper Ware‘s multiyear contract with the Sixers extends through 2016/17, but the team only inked Adonis Thomas through the end of 2013/14, according to Mark Deeks of ShamSports (Twitter link).
  • Eric Dawson, who spent preseason with the Hawks this past fall, is headed to play for Heilongjiang Zhaozhou Feng Shen of China’s second-tier league, according to Sportando’s Emiliano Carchia. Dawson has also spent time in the D-League and Iran this season.

Sixers Sign Adonis Thomas

11:15am: The team has formally announced the deal. The release states that it’s a 10-day contract, so it’ll go down as one officially, even though he’ll be with the club for the balance of the regular season.

7:53am: The Sixers will sign former Magic small forward Adonis Thomas, reports Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Pompey refers to it as a 10-day deal, though it would be tantamount to a contract for the rest of the season, since the final regular season games are April 16th. Philadelphia gained an open roster spot when James Nunnally‘s second 10-day contract expired over the weekend, and the team isn’t planning to bring him back.

Thomas made his NBA debut on a pair of 10-day contracts with the Magic shortly after the trade deadline, but he saw limited action, scoring seven points in 24 total minutes over four games. The Magic signed him at the same time that they inked center Dewayne Dedmon, as our 10-Day Tracker shows, but they chose to keep Dedmon for the season and let Thomas go. The former Memphis Tiger returned to the D-League affiliate of the Nets upon his departure from Orlando. Thomas has displayed a keen stroke from behind the arc in the D-League, nailing 46.6% of his 3.5 three-point attempts per game this year and averaging 16.6 points per contest.

The addition of the Relativity Sports client could bring an end to a maddening carousel of players on the Sixers this season. He’s in line to become the 31st player on Philadelphia’s payroll for 2013/14.

Magic Won’t Re-Sign Adonis Thomas

The Magic won’t re-sign Adonis Thomas for the season when his second 10-day contract ends at 11:59p.m. Sunday night, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports. The team also has to make a decision on Dewayne Dedmon, whose second 10-day contract expires then as well. According to Robbins, the team has not yet decided Dedmon’s fate. The Magic currently have 14 players on the roster including Thomas and Dedmon.

Thomas has appeared in four games for the Magic and has averaged 1.8 PPG, 0.8 RPG, and 0.5 APG in 6.0 MPG. His slash line is .333/.000/1.000.

Prior to joining the Magic, Thomas played in 26 games for Springfield in the NBA D-League where he averaged 16.2 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and 1.3 APG in 35.1 MPG.

Magic Re-Sign Adonis Thomas To 10-Day Pact

FRIDAY, 8:32am: The team has officially announced the deal, via press release.

TUESDAY, 12:26pm: The Magic will re-sign Adonis Thomas to a second 10-day contract, reports Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel (on Twitter). The first 10-day pact Thomas signed with the team expires at the end of Thursday. The team brought Thomas and Dewayne Dedmon aboard shortly after waiving Glen Davis.

The 20-year-old small forward has played a total of just 13 minutes over two games in his stint with the Magic so far, but it appears he did enough in the D-League this season to convince Orlando to hold on to him for a while longer. The former Memphis Tiger took 3.1 three-pointers per game and made 46.9% of them in 26 contests with the Springfield Armor, the affiliate of the Nets. Brooklyn retained his D-League rights after he spent a brief time with the big club in the preseason, but Thomas was free to sign with any NBA team after the Nets cut him from their NBA roster before opening night.

Dedmon is set to receive a second 10-day pact, too. Orlando is only carrying 12 guaranteed contracts, so unless the team wants to continue cycling through players on 10-day deals, either Dedmon or Thomas, and maybe both, are in line to receive contracts for the rest of the season once their second 10 days are up.

Magic Sign Adonis Thomas To 10-Day Deal

FEBRUARY 25TH: The team has officially announced the deal, via press release.

FEBRUARY 21ST: The Magic will sign D-Leaguer Adonis Thomas, his agent tells L. Jason Smith of The Commercial Appeal (Twitter link). It’ll be a 10-day deal, tweets Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel. Orlando is at 12 players after waiving Glen Davis earlier today, meaning the team has two weeks to find a 13th man. The signing of Thomas will take place Monday, according to both Smith and Robbins (on Twitter).

Thomas spent time with both the Hawks and Nets in camp this fall after going undrafted out of the University of Memphis this past summer. The Nets kept his D-League rights for their affiliate, the Springfield Armor, and he’s averaged 16.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in 35.1 per game for them.

Orlando plays five games from Monday through March 5th, when the small forward’s 10-day deal would expire. Thomas is a client of Relativity Sports, as our Agency Database shows.

Nets Waive Gutierrez, Johnson, Thomas

The Nets announced that they have waived guard Jorge Gutierrez and forwards Chris Johnson and Adonis Thomas.  Brooklyn’s roster now stands at the max of 15.

Gutierrez, who was signed to the training camp roster on September 30, appeared in five preseason games, averaging 1.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.  Johnson, who was also signed to the training camp roster on September 30, played in seven preseason games, averaging 5.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.  Thomas, who was signed to the training camp roster on October 18, did not appear in any preseason games for the Nets.

Nets Sign Adonis Thomas

Four days after being cut by the Hawks, undrafted rookie Adonis Thomas has landed in Brooklyn. The Nets announced today in a press release that the team has signed Thomas to a contract, increasing their roster to 18 players.

Thomas, 20, was a surprising entry in this year’s draft, declaring his intent following his sophomore season at Memphis. In his last year with the Tigers, the 6’6″ forward averaged 11.7 PPG and 4.5 RPG, with a .405 FG%.

The Nets have 15 players on fully guaranteed contracts on their roster, so there’s a strong possibility that the team will retain Thomas’ rights for its D-League affiliate, the Springfield Armor. In addition to Thomas, non-guaranteed camp invitees Jorge Gutierrez and Chris Johnson also remain under contract with Brooklyn.

Hawks Waive Thomas, Lighty, Wilkins

The Hawks have reduced their roster count by three players, cutting Adonis Thomas, David Lighty, and Damien Wilkins, according to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The team had been carrying a full 20-man roster, so at least two more players will need to be released before opening night.

Wilkins, a nine-year veteran, is the only one of the three waived Hawks with NBA experience. Lighty, 25, went undrafted in 2011 and has played overseas since then, most recently averaging 12.5 PPG and shooting 42.5% on three-pointers in 35 games for JSF Nanterre in France. Thomas, 20, left Memphis this spring after his sophomore year. All three players will become free agents later this week, assuming they clear waivers.

With 17 players still under contract, the Hawks will have to pare down their roster to 15 (or fewer) within the next couple weeks. Eric Dawson, Royal Ivey, James Johnson, and Shelvin Mack are all on fully non-guaranteed deals, making them the likeliest candidates to be released.

Camp Notes: Spurs, Hawks, Jones, Sixers

Here’s a Thursday afternoon round-up of a few of the latest news and notes out of NBA training camps:

  • The Spurs have 14 players on guaranteed contracts, meaning a spot could be open for one of the team’s five remaining camp invitees. But Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News (Twitter link) expects the team to start the season with just those 14 players.
  • The Hawks‘ first round of roster cuts will come soon, according to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, who predicts they could happen as early as tomorrow. Undrafted rookie Adonis Thomas currently looks like the most likely player to be waived, says Vivlamore.
  • Keith Schlosser of Ridiculous Upside looks at what’s next for Cameron Jones, after he was cut from camp by the Warriors. In Schlosser’s view, it should just be a matter of time before another NBA team takes a flier on the young guard.
  • While the Sixers will likely lose a lot of games this year, the team will benefit from getting a long, first-hand look at several young players, writes Michael Kaskey-Blomain at Philly.com. Many of those players are currently vying for roster spots and regular-season minutes, and if their development goes well, Philadelphia will have them under contract for several years, as I detailed this afternoon.
