Nets Waive D.J. White

The Nets have released D.J. White, the team announced today in a press release. White was included as part of the blockbuster deal that sent him to Brooklyn along with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry.

White's 2013/14 salary wasn't set to become guaranteed until August 1st, so the Nets won't take a cap hit for cutting him. Assuming the 26-year-old forward clears waivers, he'll be free to try to latch on with any team except for the Celtics, who are ineligible to re-sign him until next July.

White, a 2008 first-round pick, appeared in just 12 contests for the Celtics last season and averaged only 7.2 minutes in those games, so he didn't have a chance to make much of an impact. The five-year veteran, who has also played for the Thunder and Bobcats, has never had a real standout season in the NBA, but has been fairly efficient in the minutes he's played, recording a 14.6 career PER.

Celtics, Nets Officially Complete Trade

The Celtics and Nets have officially completed the trade that will send Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to Brooklyn, the teams announced today in a pair of press releases.

"Today, the basketball gods smiled on the Nets," said Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov in Brooklyn's statement. "With the arrival of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, we have achieved a great balance on our roster between veteran stars and young talents. This team will be dazzling to watch, and tough to compete against."

The Nets receive Garnett, Pierce, Jason Terry, and D.J. White in the deal, while the Celtics receive Kris Humphries, Gerald Wallace, MarShon Brooks, Kris Joseph, and Keith Bogans (signed-and-traded), along with 2014, 2016, and 2018 first-round picks. The '14 pick will be the Hawks' or Nets' selection, whichever is worse. The '16 and '18 picks are unprotected. The Celtics also have the ability to swap first-rounders with Brooklyn in 2017.

The deal couldn't be formally finalized until today because Joseph wasn't eligible to be traded within three months of signing with the Celtics on April 12th.

Celtics Re-Sign D.J. White

11:45am: The Celtics have formally announced the signing in a press release. Like Terrence Williams' deal, it will include a team option for next season.

WEDNESDAY, 11:01am: The Celtics have officially signed White for the remainder of the season, tweets Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe.

TUESDAY, 8:44am: D.J. White's second 10-day contract with the Celtics is set to expire tonight, but the 6'9" forward won't be looking for work tomorrow. Jessica Camerato of CSNNE.com reports that the Celtics will re-sign White to a contract for the remainder of the season.

White, 26, hasn't seen a ton of playing time during his first 20 days with the club, appearing in just four games for a total of 27 minutes. Still, he has looked solid in his limited minutes, and provides some frontcourt depth as the Celtics approach the postseason.

With all 15 roster spots currently filled, the Celtics will make White their 14th player on a guaranteed contract. Shavlik Randolph's second 10-day contract with the club will expire tomorrow night, so Boston will face another decision later in the week on whether to bring back Randolph or leave one roster spot open.

Atlantic Notes: Bargnani, Pietrus, Celtics, Felton

Following blowout losses in Golden State and Denver, the Knicks' current five-game road trip managed to get even worse when Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler left last night's game against the Nuggets with knee injuries. While Chandler downplayed the severity of his left knee contusion and could play tonight, Anthony will head back to New York to get his troublesome right knee drained. Here's more out of the Atlantic Division:

Doug Smith of the Toronto Star says with "99.9% certainty" that amnestying Andrea Bargnani this summer isn't something that's even been discussed at the highest level of the Raptors' front office.
The Raptors were widely panned when they inked Landry Fields to an expensive three-year deal last summer, but as Stephen Brotherson of HoopsWorld writes, Fields has played his best ball of the season in recent weeks and can still be an important part of the team going forward.
Mickael Pietrus, currently on the Raptors' roster, still hasn't gotten over not being able to return to the Celtics this season, as he tells Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston.com. "You never know, hopefully I’ll be back," Pietrus said.
Tom Layman of the Boston Herald spoke to D.J. White and Shavlik Randolph about trying to make enough of an impression that the Celtics will re-sign them when their respective 10-day contracts expire.
With the Knicks scheduled to play in Portland tonight, Raymond Felton had plenty of comments to make about the 2011/12 he spent with the Trail Blazers, as Marc Berman of the New York Post and Frank Isola of the New York Daily News document. Felton called it an "unfair situation" and said he wished he never asked for the trade that sent him from the Nuggets to the Blazers.

Celtics Re-Sign White; Randolph Expected Back

10:11am: White tells Blakely he signed a second 10-day contract with the Celtics this morning. Randolph said he hasn't re-upped yet, but is optimistic about his chances (Twitter links).

10:04am: D.J. White's 10-day contract with the Celtics expired last night, and Shavlik Randolph's is over after tonight, but the team is expected to announce soon that they're re-signing both of them, tweets A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com. Boston brought the big men aboard along with guard Terrence Williams shortly after the trade deadline to bolster an injury-depleted roster.

White and Randolph have occupied the final two spots on Boston's 15-man roster. It's not clear whether White and Shavlik will be signed through the rest of the season or receive a second set of 10-day deals. After his first 10-day contract with the Celtics expired, Williams received a deal that runs through the season and includes a non-guaranteed second year in 2013/14.

Neither White nor Randolph has seen much time on the floor for Boston. White has appeared in just one game so far, totaling four minutes, while Randolph has yet to see game action. Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston.com wrote yesterday that "all indications" were that White would be back with the team, since he accompanied them on their flight to Oklahoma City for today's game. Randolph is with the team as well, as Baxter Holmes of the Boston Globe noted, though he'd be eligible to play against the Thunder either way, since his contract runs a day longer than White's.

Celtics Links: White, Bobcats, Role Players

The Heat are garnering plenty of attention for their 17-game win streak, but the second-hottest team in the East is the other team that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last season. The Celtics have won five in a row, and beat the Hawks last night to pull into a tie with Atlanta for this year's sixth seed. Boston is only a game and a half behind the Nets for the fourth seed and home-court advantage in the first round, so while we wait to find out how far the C's can climb, here's the latest on the team:

D.J. White traveled with the Celtics to Oklahoma City in advance of tomorrow's matchup, and "all indications" are that White will get another contract from the Celtics once his 10-day deal expires tonight, as Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston.com writes.
Should he stay, he'll be particularly motivated for Boston's next two games, against the Thunder and Bobcats, two teams with which White used to play. White was taken aback when the Bobcats didn't pursue him when he came back from China this year, Forsberg notes in the same piece.
Celtics basketball president Danny Ainge may be reluctant to deal his stars, but one of those marquee talents believes he's excelled at finding role players, observes Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald. "I think the guys that Danny’s brought in are aggressive guys," Kevin Garnett said. "They fit the character of our team. They’re gutty guys, guys that are willing to work and get down. It’s guys who are willing to work, willing to listen, willing to be coached. And they’ve bought in. We don’t have any distractions in here. Everybody knows what the goal is."

Atlantic Rumors: Sixers, Josh Smith, Knicks, White

Rob Mahoney of SI.com took a look at 18 players on troublesome contracts, and all five Atlantic Division teams have a representative. The last-place Raptors appear to have the most problems, with Rudy Gay, Andrea Bargnani, DeMar DeRozan and Landry Fields all on the list, though the Nets, with Joe Johnson and Gerald Wallace, have multiple entries as well. The Sixers were one of several teams reportedly pursuing Josh Smith at the trade deadline, and John Mitchell of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets that the Sixers were "close" to a deal with the Hawks. Philly's interest in the soon-to-be free agent dates back to last season, Mitchell also notes.
Jerome Jordan, who spent last season with the Knicks, has been on the team's radar as he plays in the D-League this season, reports Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com (Twitter link). Zwerling says New York can't sign him this season, though the Knicks could bring him aboard if they go against their plan to re-sign Kenyon Martin when his 10-day contract expires. New York could also waive a player on a guaranteed contract, but that seems unlikely.
Andrew Perna of RealGM.com checks in with D.J. White, who finally made his debut for the Celtics tonight after signing a 10-day contract on February 28th. White revealed that he had opportunities to play for NBA teams before heading to China in September.

Celtics Sign D.J. White

THURSDAY, 11:31am: The Celtics have officially signed White to a 10-day contract, the team announced today in a press release.

WEDNESDAY, 2:12pm: D.J. White has finally received his letter of clearance from China, opening the door for him to sign with an NBA team, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Now that he's been cleared, White will sign with the Celtics in the next 24 hours, tweets Wojnarowski.

White, 26, signed a contract to play in China this season, and averaged 21.6 PPG and 9.7 RPG in 32 games for the Shanghai Sharks before his team was eliminated from postseason contention. The 6'8" forward has played four NBA seasons with the Thunder and Bobcats, and was actually fairly productive for Charlotte last season, averaging 6.8 PPG and 3.6 RPG in 18.9 MPG over 58 contests.

Head coach Doc Rivers confirmed this past weekend that the Celtics were expecting to sign White once he became eligible, while GM Danny Ainge indicated on Monday night that the deal would be a 10-day contract.

Ainge also pointed out that 10-day deals are often timed to maximize a player's time with the team, so I wonder if the Celtics will wait until Friday to finalize White's deal — that would mean his 10 days would include five games rather than four. Boston may prefer to get him signed before then, however, in order to get him some extra practice time with the club.

Terrence Williams is also currently on a 10-day contract with the C's. His deal is set to expire after Friday's game.

Celtics Notes: White, Williams, Melo

The Celtics completed their five-game western road trip last night with a big win in Utah, finally finishing off the Jazz in overtime with the help of a great performance from Paul Pierce. The C's head back home now, and will get a few days off before hosting the Warriors in Boston on Friday. In the meantime, here's the latest on potential roster moves for the team, courtesy of Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald:

D.J. White continues to wait on his letter of clearance from China before he can officially sign with the Celtics. GM Danny Ainge expects the paperwork to be complete very soon, but we'll see if the team waits until later in the week to formally add White — Ainge himself notes that 10-day contracts are often stragetically timed to maximize a player's time with the club.
Ainge wouldn't says whether the Celtics plan to sign Terrence Williams to a second 10-day conract when his current deal expires after Friday's game.
Ainge on roster additions and the possibility of committing to Williams or anyone else: "We’re still looking. Things change week by week and we’re still looking. We don’t really have to decide until the day before the playoffs start. There’s a lot of guys who can contribute, but there’s not enough of a difference between them to be able to say, 'He’s the guy.'"
There's a decent chance Fab Melo will be re-assigned to the D-League's Maine Red Claws when the Celtics return home this week. "If he hasn’t fit into the rotation, we’ll get him some minutes in Portland," said Ainge. "He was playing great until his concussion, then he got a thigh bruise, and then he came on this trip. It’s been good for him to be on this trip. He’s putting in a lot of time. It’s just experience."

Atlantic Notes: White, Celtics, Kenyon, Sixers

The Nets were one of the most active teams in pre-deadline talk, but they were the only Atlantic Division team not to make a swap this week. The other four teams didn't exactly make waves, however, as Jordan Crawford, Sebastian Telfair and Charles Jenkins are division's only trade acquisitions. Still, they aren't the only players joining the Atlantic, and we examine that and other news from around the division:

Paperwork related to D.J. White's release from the Chinese league is delaying his signing with the Celtics, and until he or another big-man signee contributes for the Celtics, the onus is on Chris Wilcox as the team's primary interior player off the bench. Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald has details.
Terrence Williams spent two weeks this summer as a free agent working out with the Celtics, and those workouts convinced the team he could play point guard, writes Baxter Holmes of the Boston Globe.
Replacing Ronnie Brewer with Kenyon Martin on a 10-day contract is a low-risk upgrade for the Knicks, Newsday's Al Iannazzone opines. Iannazzone also runs down a list of players who could be headed elsewhere in the offseason, including Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce of the Celtics, Amare Stoudemire of the Knicks, and Kris Humphries of the Nets.
Interpreting Andrew Bynum's response this week to a question about whether he'd like to re-sign with the 76ers, Tom Moore of PhillyBurbs.com doesn't think he's too keen on returning. Moore looks at the options the Sixers have, including a sign-and-trade, if Bynum won't be around next season.
