Quincy Pondexter To Miss Rest Of Season

Grizzlies swingman Quincy Pondexter is expected to miss the rest of the season with a broken foot, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. The team says it’s a tarsal navicular stress fracture in his right foot, according to a press release that lists Pondexter as out indefinitely. The Grizzlies have nonetheless confirmed to Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal that Pondexter is likely out for the year (Twitter link).

The 25-year-old sustained the injury Saturday in a game against the Warriors. He’d just signed a four-year, $14MM rookie scale extension before the October 31st deadline. Concerns about his foot likely helped prompt the team’s interest in signing a free agent guard. Memphis is reportedly bringing Kendall Marshall, Seth Curry, Darius Morris and Reggie Williams in for workouts. The Grizzlies have the minimum 13 players on their roster, meaning there’s room for as many as two additions.

Pondexter was averaging slightly fewer minutes than last season, when he set career highs in nearly every category. His three-point shooting has been off as well, with the former 26th overall pick having connected on 32.4% of his three-point attempts compared to 39.5% last year. It’s nonetheless a significant loss for a 9-10 team already reeling from a long-term injury to Marc Gasol. Pondexter’s absence could mean more playing time for rookies Nick Calathes and Jamaal Franklin, depending any roster moves the team makes.

Odds & Ends: Tinsley, Pondexter, Kings, Mills

Here are a few notes from around the league as the NBA’s first week comes to a close:

Jamaal Tinsley‘s one-year minimum-salary deal with the Jazz is entirely non-guaranteed, as Mark Deeks of ShamSports revealed today when he updated Utah’s team salaries.
Quincy Pondexter‘s four-year, $14MM extension with the Grizzlies starts at close to $3.15MM next year and has gradual raises in each subsequent season, according to Deeks.
Kings GM Pete D’Alessandro acknowledges that the decision not to pick up Jimmer Fredette‘s 2014/15 option was “agonizing,” but tells James Ham of Cowbell Kingdom that he ultimately decided the added flexibility for next season was too enticing to pass up.
Ailene Voisin of The Sacramento Bee wonders if Fredette could prove more productive on a team that plays a style more suited to him and applauds the Kings for declining his option and giving themselves more time to evaluate him before they make a further commitment.
Ian Begley of ESPN New York reports that first-year Knicks GM Steve Mills is happy with the current state of New York’s roster: “I think we like the roster we have right now. And I think we want to give it some time and see how they come together on the team and how guys gel together.“

Grizzlies Sign Quincy Pondexter To Extension

3:48pm: The Grizzlies have officially announced in a press release that they’ve signed Pondexter to a contract extension.

10:33am: The Grizzlies’ deal with Pondexter will be worth $14MM over four years, reports Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com (via Twitter).

8:03am: Ed Davis was viewed as the likeliest extension candidate on the Grizzlies leading up to today’s deadline, but his teammate Quincy Pondexter may be the only Memphis player who gets a new deal today, according to Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Tillery reports (via Twitter) that Pondexter and the Grizzlies are expected to finalize a four-year contract in advance of today’s deadline, while an extension is unlikely for Davis, who is far apart with the team in negotiations.

When ESPN.com’s Marc Stein examined extension possibilities 10 days ago, he indicated that a deal for Pondexter hadn’t been completely ruled out by the Grizzlies, though it didn’t seem probable. According to Tillery (via Twitter), the extension came together within the last few days, after the two sides exchanged proposals. The financial terms of the contract remain unclear, but it’s safe to assume that Pondexter’s deal will be much more modest than those signed recently by Paul George, John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Derrick Favors, and Larry Sanders.

Pondexter, 25, was limited to 59 games last season due to a sprained MCL, but had his best run during the playoffs, when he averaged 8.9 PPG and shot 45.3% on three-pointers. The 6’6″ shooter has played the last two seasons in Memphis after being acquired from New Orleans in a trade for Greivis Vasquez.

With today’s extension deadline looming, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see one or two players besides Pondexter secure new deals. Gordon Hayward of the Jazz and Eric Bledsoe of the Suns are among the candidates.

Stein On Bledsoe, Davis, Turner, Pondexter

Gordon Hayward and the Jazz are working on an extension, and it looks like the two sides will work something out within the next 10 days, as ESPN.com’s Marc Stein reported overnight. However, Hayward looks like the only member of the draft class of 2010 likely to receive a new deal by the October 31st deadline, in Stein’s view. The ESPN.com scribe examined the remaining extension-eligible players in his latest piece, so let’s round up the highlights….

Besides Hayward, Eric Bledsoe of the Suns and Ed Davis of the Grizzlies appear to be the strongest candidates to re-up with their respective teams. Sources tell Stein that Memphis has been discussing a new deal with Davis’ camp this month.
As for Bledsoe, Stein notes that next year’s free agent crop of point guards looks thin, meaning it may be risky for the Suns to let the ex-Clipper hit the open market, even as a restricted free agent. According to Stein, Favors’ deal may help Bledsoe’s negotiating position, since Utah paid its big man based in part on the expectation that his role and production will increase this season.
Evan Turner is more likely to be traded by the Sixers than extended.
Having spent big already on John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins respectively, the Wizards and Kings probably won’t extend their other fourth-year players this month. Trevor Booker and Kevin Seraphin are eligible for Washington, while Greivis Vasquez and Patrick Patterson fit the bill in Sacramento.
Greg Monroe (Pistons) and Avery Bradley (Celtics) also continue to look like strong bets to hit free agency next summer.
A new deal for Quincy Pondexter hasn’t been completely ruled out by the Grizzlies, but Ekpe Udoh (Bucks) and Jordan Crawford (Celtics) won’t get extensions, says Stein.

Grizzlies Exercise 2013/14 Option On Pondexter

The Grizzlies have picked up their $2.23MM fourth-year option on Quincy Pondexter for 2013/14, Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal tweets. Pondexter was the last of the players eligible for rookie-scale contract extensions by tonight's 11pm Central deadline, as our tracker shows.

The Thunder took Pondexter with the 26th pick in the 2010 NBA draft, trading him that night to the Hornets. The 6'6" swingman averaged 2.8 points in 11.1 minutes per game as a rookie for New Orleans, which sent him in another trade to the Grizzlies before last season. Pondexter saw a little bit more time in Memphis, averaging 15.7 MPG while putting up 4.2 PPG.
