Damien Inglis

Central Notes: Cavs, Parker, Inglis

The Cavs are more than willing to be active in the trade market, but that doesn’t mean other teams will willingly come to their aid, and timing for both sides will be a factor in making any deals, Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders writes. “We’re very actively working the phones and doing everything we can to improve the team,” GM David Griffin said. “At the same time, unfortunately our timing doesn’t always match the timing of everybody else. Until the trade deadline, people typically don’t have a lot of reason to do anything in a specific time. So we’re doing what we can and certainly working every angle we can.”

Here’s more from the Central Division:

  • Griffin also added that teams, including his own, tend to overvalue their assets when attempting to make trades, Kyler notes. “At times like these, everybody is hoping their assets are worth more than they really are,” Griffin said. “I’m probably no different. I’m hoping that our DP [Disabled Player Exception] and TP [Traded Player Exception] are attractive but we won’t really know until we get to the point where somebody is willing to act.
  • Bucks rookie Jabari Parker is set to undergo surgery today to repair his torn left ACL, Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. Parker injured his knee in December and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. Parker said he will benefit from the rest after playing non-stop through high school and his freshman year at Duke, Gardner adds. “This will give me time to work on myself because I haven’t really had a chance,” Parker said. “AAU basketball took a lot out of my schedule. Even in college and high school, I took two years to really prepare for the NBA. I didn’t take any time off. I can take this time and really work on it. Even if I miss 20 games [next season], I’ll still get a good ratio out of the rest of the games. So there’s no rush.
  • Also going under the knife today for the Bucks will be Damien Inglis, Gardner notes. Inglis will have surgery on his right ankle , which he injured during a pre-draft workout in Oklahoma City. Inglis, a second round selection in this year’s draft, hasn’t appeared in an NBA game yet, and is also expected to miss the remainder of the 2014/15 season.

Eastern Notes: Butler, Wizards, Maxiell, Inglis

The Bulls and Jimmy Butler are “millions apart” in extension talks, according to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, and while the precise gap is unclear, it’s not uncommon for sides to be as far apart as the Bulls and Butler are even a week before the extension deadline, Johnson writes. The team and Butler’s representatives at Relativity Sports this week had their first extensive talks in awhile, Johnson adds. Here’s more from around the Eastern Conference:

  • The Wizards recently tried to pry Julyan Stone out of his contract with Reyer Venezia of Italy, reports Shams Charania of RealGM (on Twitter). The point guard has an escape clause in the pact, according to Charania, who suggests that Stone would be disinclined to leave the team since he’s seeing heavy playing time. It’s unclear if the Wizards maintain interest after signing John Lucas III earlier this week.
  • Jason Maxiell will remain with the Hornets on opening night in spite of his non-guaranteed contract, coach Steve Clifford confirmed today to reporters, including Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer (Twitter link).
  • Bucks rookie Damien Inglis will miss at least another six weeks because the right foot he broke during a predraft workout for the Thunder has not healed, tweets Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The Bucks drafted Inglis 31st overall in June. His deal is guaranteed for this season.

Bucks Sign Damien Inglis

AUGUST 26TH, 6:03pm: The signing is official, the team announced.

AUGUST 20TH, 8:05pm: The Bucks have signed 31st overall pick Damien Inglis, tweets Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders. The team has yet to make an official announcement, but the move took place Tuesday, as the RealGM transactions log shows. It’s a multiyear deal, according to RealGM. Inglis probably received a three-year deal worth a shade under $1MM this season and the minimum salary in the final two seasons if he’s like many of his peers from the top of the 2014 second round, including 36th overall pick and new Bucks teammate Johnny O’Bryant.

Inglis is a native of French Guiana who spent last season playing for Chorale Roanne in France. He had a decent chance to end up as a first-round pick, since he ranked 26th in Jonathan Givony’s DraftExpress prospect listings and 30th with Chad Ford of ESPN.com. The 6’8″ small forward is nonetheless a raw prospect, having averaged just 4.6 points and 3.6 rebounds in 15.3 minutes per game in France this year.

The signing creates a logjam of sorts in Milwaukee, particularly if Inglis’ contract is guaranteed, as is likely the case. The team already had 14 guaranteed deals, as our roster counts show, not including Kendall Marshall, who figures to be a part of the rotation on his minimum-salary pact after averaging 8.8 assists per game for the Lakers last season. The Bucks also renounced their rights to free agent Ramon Sessions, as Pincus and RealGM report, and while that doesn’t clear an additional roster spot, it’s a signal that the club is done with free agent signings this summer, save for perhaps a few training camp invitations.

Contract Details: Inglis, Heat, Jazz, Hamilton

The pace of signings is slow this time of year, but teams continue to add to their rosters. Eric Pincus reveals some previously unreported details about a handful of these signings within his latest updates to the salary pages at Basketball Insiders, so we’ll pass along the news here:

  • The Bucks are giving 31st overall pick Damien Inglis guaranteed salaries of $820K this season and $855K for 2015/16, both amounts that are more than the minimum, as Pincus notes (Twitter link). It’s a three-year deal in all that features a non-guaranteed season at the minimum salary in the contract’s final year. Milwaukee used part of its cap space to accommodate the signing.
  • Tyler Johnson‘s minimum salary with the Heat this season is guaranteed for $75K, while his minimum salary for next season is without a guarantee, according to Pincus. Reggie Williams is receiving a non-guaranteed minimum salary in his pact with the Heat this year, as Pincus also reveals.
  • The Jazz gave Dee Bost a $65K guarantee this season, while the other two years of his three-year contract for the minimum salary are non-guaranteed, Pincus reports. Pincus also notes that the team gave Jack Cooley a three-year deal for the minimum, though it remains unclear whether any of Cooley’s pay is guaranteed. Utah used cap space rather than the minimum-salary exception on Bost and Cooley, since the minimum-salary exception only allows for two-year deals.
  • The Raptors have the means to shell out more than the minimum salary, but they didn’t give Jordan Hamilton any more than that, as Pincus documents. Hamilton’s deal is reportedly partially guaranteed, but just how much he’s guaranteed remains unknown.
  • Darius Morris is on a one-year deal with the Blazers, Pincus shows.

NBA Draft Withdrawal Deadline Updates

Monday was the deadline for players to withdraw from the NBA draft, and the league has announced the list of those who’ve pulled out. The deadline applied mostly to prospects from overseas, since any collegian who takes his name out of consideration at this point isn’t be able to return to NCAA competition. Mychal Ammons of South Alabama is the only U.S.-based player who withdrew, but he’d already signed a deal with an overseas club.

Yesterday’s reports identified several of the prospects taking their names out of the draft, as well as some high-profile players staying in, and we’ve added the previously unreported names of those pulling out to the top of the list below. For the complete register of early entrants denoting those who’ve withdrawn, click here.

Withdrawing from the draft

  • Ammons, Berkay Candan, Tomas Dimsa, Marko Ramljak, Alejandro SuarezDevon Van Oostrum are all out of the draft, the NBA announced.

Remaining in the draft

  • Jokic isn’t the only prospect to flip-flop today.  Damien Inglis changed his mind and has decided to keep his name in the draft, agent Pedja Materic tells Jonthan Givony of DraftExpress (via Twitter).
  • Raznatovic, Saric’s agent, took to Twitter to confirm that his client will remain in the draft (hat tip to Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).
  • Nikola Jokic has changed his mind and will remain in the draft after all, Raznatovic tweets (hat tip to Chad Ford of ESPN.com).
  • Dario Saric will stay in the draft, a source tells David Pick of Eurobasket.com (Twitter link).

Damien Inglis To Enter Draft

French league forward Damien Inglis is entering this year’s draft, reports Pedja Materic of BeoBasket (Twitter link). Inglis, who turns 19 next month, is the 38th-best prospect in Jonathan Givony’s DraftExpress rankings, but Chad Ford of ESPN.com has him unranked.

Inglis has an intriguing build, with 6’9″ height and a 7’3″ wingspan, and several NBA scouts have told Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports that they’re high on his defensive ability. The native of French Guiana didn’t put up impressive offensive numbers for Chorale Roanne in France this season, scoring just 4.7 points in 15 minutes per game. Still, he shot 38.7% from three-point territory.

Inglis tells Spears that he might withdraw from the draft before the June 16th deadline to do so. He wouldn’t be automatically draft-eligible until 2017.

“I want to develop my game with a good team who is very interested and focused on me,” Inglis said. “I want to play in the league next year but it depends. I don’t really want [to] take my name out.”
