Mavericks Release Rashad Vaughn, Donte Ingram

Three days after signing them, the Mavericks have waived Rashad Vaughn and Donte Ingram, both of whom were on non-guaranteed contracts. Dallas confirmed the cuts today in a press release.

While Vaughn and Ingram didn’t spend much time with the Mavericks, they could be in line for a stint with Dallas’ G League club, the Texas Legends. Unless another team signs them once they clear waivers on Saturday, Vaughn and Ingram are eligible to become affiliate players for the Mavs and could earn bonuses worth up to $50K.

Vaughn was the Bucks’ first-round pick in 2015 and has played a total of 139 NBA games since then. In 28 games for the Bucks, Nets and Magic last season, Vaughn averaged 2.3 PPG in 7.6 MPG. He played for the Heat’s Summer League teams in Las Vegas and Sacramento this offseason.

Ingram, meanwhile, went undrafted in June after playing four years for Loyola University Chicago. He started 38 games as a senior and averaged 11.0 PPG and 6.4 RPG in 30.6 MPG. He also appeared in five games for the Bulls’ Las Vegas Summer League team in July, averaging 6.0 PPG, 4.8 RPG and 1.4 APG in 26.8 MPG.

Dallas’ roster now sits at 17 players — 15 on standard NBA contracts and a pair on two-way deals.

Mavs Sign Donte Ingram, Rashad Vaughn

The Mavericks have signed swingman Donte Ingram and guard Rashad Vaughn and waived forward Jalen Jones and guard Codi Miller-McIntyre, according to a team press release.

Terms were disclosed but the two signings are almost certainly Exhibit 10 contracts.

Ingram went undrafted in June after playing four years for Loyola University Chicago. He started 38 games as a senior and averaged 11.0 PPG and 6.4 RPG in 30.6 MPG. He played five games for the Bulls’ Las Vegas summer league team, averaging 6.0 PPG, 4.8 RPG and 1.4 APG in 26.8 MPG.

Vaughn, who like Ingram is listed at 6’6”, was the Bucks’ first-round pick in 2015 and has played a combined 139 NBA games. In 28 games for the Bucks, Nets and Magic last season, Vaughn averaged 2.3 PPG in 7.6 MPG. He played for the Heat’s summer league teams in Las Vegas and Sacramento this offseason.

The 6’7” Jones appeared in one Dallas preseason game before being let go. He played 12 regular-season games with the Mavericks as a rookie last season, averaging 5.8 PPG and 2.9 RPT in 13.5 MPG. The 6’3” Miller-McIntyre made cameos in two preseason games.

Northwest Notes: Wolves, Nader, Schroder, Millsap

The Timberwolves have hosted a handful of free agents for a workout this week, with Marcus Georges-Hunt, Rashad Vaughn, and John Jenkins among the latest players to earn a look from Minnesota, per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic (Twitter link). Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500 (Twitter link) also adds Eric Moreland to the list of players auditioned by the Wolves.

Nick Young, Arron Afflalo and Corey Brewer worked out for the Timberwolves too, but according to Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune, a number of agents believe the Wolves simply plan to sign Luol Deng, making them reluctant to send their players for a workout with the team. Minnesota reportedly launched its pursuit of Deng this week.

Following his trade from the Celtics this summer, Thunder forward Abdel Nader is looking forward to his new opportunity with the team, relays Nick Gallo of OKCThunder.com. “It’s great,” Nader said. “I met a lot of the younger guys mostly, and even Russ, PG, Raymond (Felton). Everybody has been great. It’s a great group of guys. High character guys. I’m just really excited to be able to start playing with this team and build chemistry on the court as well as off the court.”
Dennis Schroder, who was also traded to the Thunder this summer, discussed his upcoming season, the difficulties he faced growing up in Germany and the advice he received from Dirk Nowitzki in a separate piece written by Nick Gallo. Schroder will provide depth off the bench behind All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook this season.
Nuggets forward Paul Millsap is set to start the season injury-free after wrist surgery forced him to miss 44 games last year, as detailed by Chris Dempsey of Nuggets.com. Millsap will be relied upon to anchor Denver’s defense and stretch the club’s offense.

Heat Notes: Vaughn, Stoudemire, Whiteside, Robinson

At age 21, former first-round pick Rashad Vaughn is trying to salvage his NBA career, relays Ira Winderman of The Sun-Sentinel. Vaughn was part of the Heat’s entry in the Las Vegas Summer League, hoping to earn another shot after being traded twice and waived twice last season.

Vaughn was taken by the Bucks with the 17th pick in the 2015 draft, but his career tailed off quickly after a promising rookie season. In February, Milwaukee dealt him to the Nets, who sent him to the Pelicans two days later. After being waived by New Orleans, Vaughn signed two 10-day contracts with the Magic, but wasn’t kept when the second one expired.

“This is kind of my journey,” Vaughn said. “I’ve got to take a look at it and see what I did wrong and go from there and continue to try to just persevere from there.”

Amar’e Stoudemire, who will be back in Miami this week with the Big3 League, is also hoping for another NBA opportunity, Winderman writes in a separate story. Stoudemire, 35, sat out last season after winning a championship in Israel the year before. He said he would be interested in a return to the Heat, but hasn’t spoken to anyone from the team. “As of right now, I’m showing my athletic ability and the way I move,” Stoudemire said. “I think a lot of teams haven’t really seen me play since the last time I played in Israel, so I just want them to see I have great heath and am able to be on that level. Once they see how healthy I am and how good I feel, I think teams will be able to sign me at that point.”
The Heat have been open about their desire to trade Hassan Whiteside, but Stoudemire believes his former teammate can succeed in Miami, Winderman adds in the same story. Stoudemire said Whiteside needs to work on his post skills this summer and become a more effective inside scorer. “You can’t be satisfied with the money and the fame; you have to be able to work to become great,” Stoudemire said. “And that’s one thing that a lot players don’t understand. You can have amazing potential, but you’re never going to reach that potential unless you put in that work.”
Duncan Robinson was among the biggest winners in summer league, earning a two-way contract with the Heat. Robinson quickly impressed the team with his outside shot, summer league coach Eric Glass tells Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. “He came in and really played well and shot it like we thought and showed us that he can do a couple other things on the court that we liked,” Glass said. “And obviously a two-way came out of that, which he really earned.”

Magic Waive Rashad Vaughn, Sign Rodney Purvis

MARCH 8: The Magic have officially signed Purvis to a 10-day contract, the team announced today in a press release. The deal will run through next Saturday night.

MARCH 7: Rashad Vaughn‘s 10-day contract with the Magic wasn’t set to expire until Sunday night, but the team has waived the third-year guard, according to Josh Robbins of The Orlando Sentinel (Twitter link). As Robbins notes, Vaughn is dealing with right knee soreness, which wasn’t likely to heal before the end of his 10-day pact. The Magic have officially confirmed the move (via Twitter).

Vaughn, 21, was traded from the Bucks to the Nets to the Pelicans earlier this season and was subsequently waived by New Orleans. By signing a pair of 10-day contracts with Orlando, the former 17th overall pick reunited with Magic GM John Hammond, the executive who drafted him three years ago in Milwaukee.

Vaughn’s brief stint in Orlando wasn’t exactly a resounding success, however. In five games, he played 35 total minutes, posting just five points and four rebounds. Although his second 10-day contract with the team was cut short on the sixth day, Vaughn will receive his full 10-day salary.

According to Robbins, the Magic will likely fill the roster spot vacated by Vaughn by signing guard Rodney Purvis to a 10-day contract. Purvis – who is currently playing for Orlando’s G League affiliate, the Lakeland Magic – is scheduled to head to Orlando shortly to complete a deal with the NBA club, ESPN’s Ian Begley confirms (via Twitter).

In 37 G League games this season, Purvis has averaged 20.5 PPG, 4.0 RPG, and 3.5 APG with a .422/.389/.782 shooting line.

Magic Sign Rashad Vaughn To Second 10-Day Deal

After his initial 10-day contract with the team expired Thursday night, the Magic have re-signed Rashad Vaughn, inking him to a second 10-day deal, the team announced today (via Twitter).

Vaughn, the 17th overall pick in the 2015 draft, has yet to develop into a reliable rotation player, having seen his playing time decline since he averaged 14.3 MPG in his rookie year in Milwaukee. This season, he has bounced around from team to team, having been traded from the Bucks to the Nets to the Pelicans. Vaughn eventually signed a 10-day deal with Orlando last month after being waived by New Orleans.

Although Vaughn’s stint with the Magic reunited him with John Hammond, the general manager that drafted him in Milwaukee three years ago, it hasn’t given him an opportunity for an increased role so far. In four games with the Magic, the 21-year-old has played just 25 total minutes, picking up five points and two boards during his limited action.

Re-signing Vaughn will leave the Magic with a second cap charge of $83,129 and will once again fill their final roster spot. When Vaughn’s new 10-day contract comes to an end, Orlando will have to decide whether to let him go or sign him to a rest-of-season deal.

Magic Sign Rashad Vaughn To 10-Day Contract

2:31pm: The Magic have officially signed Vaughn to a 10-day deal, the team announced today in a press release.

12:33pm: Former first-round pick Rashad Vaughn is set to join his fourth NBA team of the last month. According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter), Vaughn has agreed to sign a 10-day contract with the Magic.

It has been an eventful few weeks for Vaughn, who was originally traded from Milwaukee to Brooklyn in the deal that sent Tyler Zeller to the Bucks. From there, Vaughn was dealt to New Orleans by the Nets in exchange for Dante Cunningham. The 6’6″ shooting guard never appeared in a game for the Pelicans, having been waived two days after the trade deadline.

Although he was the 17th overall pick in the 2015 draft, Vaughn has failed to develop into a consistent NBA rotation player. The UNLV product has averaged 3.1 PPG with a .337/.312/.692 shooting line in 134 career NBA contests (12.2 MPG). Still, he’s just 21 years old, so the rebuilding Magic will take a low-risk flier. Current Orlando GM John Hammond was the head of basketball operations in Milwaukee when the Bucks drafted Vaughn in ’15.

The Magic have an opening on their 15-man roster, so they won’t need to waive a player to make room for Vaughn.

Pelicans Waive Rashad Vaughn, Mike James

The Pelicans have requested waivers on guard Rashad Vaughn and two-way player Mike James, per an official press release from the team. And according to Scott Kushner of The Advocate, it looks like New Orleans may use the newly acquired roster spot gained from releasing Vaughn to give the team an option to acquire another player in the upcoming buyout market.

Vaughn, who began this season with the Bucks, was acquired by the Nets in exchange for Tyler Zeller earlier this week. Then, on trade deadline day, the Nets traded him to the Pelicans in exchange for Dante Cunningham, giving New Orleans a trade exception worth $2.3MM, the value of Cunningham’s salary.

The 21-year-old former first-round pick played in only one game for the Nets and didn’t suit up for the Pelicans. In Milwaukee, he appeared in 22 games this season, averaging 2.7 PPG in only 7.9 MPG. He will become an unrestricted free agent assuming he clears waivers.

James, whose release was first reported yesterday by David Pick, asked the Pelicans to waive him so that he could return to Panathinaikos B.C. in Greece, where James helped Panathinaikos win both the Greek Cup title and the Greek Basket League championship last season.

Likely most recognized for being the first player in NBA history to have his two-way contract converted into a regular season contract, James put up respectable numbers for the Suns as a rookie earlier this season, averaging 10.4 points and 3.8 assists in 20.9 minutes per game before being waived to make room on the roster for Isaiah Canaan.

Pelicans Trade Dante Cunningham To Nets

3:47pm: The trade is now official, according to a press release issued by the Nets.

1:30pm: The Pelicans are trading forward Dante Cunningham to the Nets in exchange for Rashad Vaughn, Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports tweets.

The 30-year-old veteran on an expiring deal, who had previously requested a trade from New Orleans, will arrive in Brooklyn and plans to stay there. David Aldridge of TNT tweets that the forward does not intend to pursue a buyout from his new team after three and a half seasons with the Pelicans.

In 51 games for the Pels, including 24 starts, Cunningham averaged 5.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. While he may not move the needle much for the Brooklyn franchise at first glance, the Nets staff has already done great things maximizing the value of other veterans at similar stages in their career.

The deal comes hours after a previous Cunningham swap fell through. Earlier today we wrote that the Pistons were engaged with New Orleans but ultimately traded the package of assets reserved for Cunningham to the Grizzlies for forward James Ennis instead.

This is the second time in a week that Vaughn will change teams. After starting the year with the Bucks, the 21-year-old shooting guard played one game for the Nets. Now he’ll join a Pelicans squad desperate for perimeter scoring.

Bucks Acquire Zeller From Nets, Deal Vaughn

8:04pm: The deal is official, according to a Nets press release.

5:45pm: The Bucks will acquire center Tyler Zeller from the Nets in exchange for shooting guard Rashad Vaughn and a second-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter links).

The Bucks will forward their second-round pick to Brooklyn in this summer’s draft if it falls between 31 and 47 overall, Wojnarowski adds in a separate tweet. Otherwise, the Suns will receive it as part of the Eric Bledsoe deal. Brooklyn was mainly interested in adding the draft pick, Wojnarowski adds (Twitter link).

Milwaukee will be Zeller’s fourth team. He played the last three seasons with the Celtics before signing a low-cost, two-year deal with Brooklyn. His $1.93MM contract for next season isn’t guaranteed. Zeller, 28, started 33 of 42 games with the Nets this season, averaging 7.1 PPG and 4.6 RPG in 16.7 MPG.

The 7-footer provides another big body in the middle. The Bucks have utilized John Henson and Thon Maker at center for the most part and also have Marshall Plumlee in reserve.

Vaughn, who has played all three of his seasons with the Bucks, has seen spot duty this season. He’s appeared in 22 games, averaging 2.7 PPG and 7.9 MPG. Vaughn, who is still just 21 years old, was the 17th overall pick of the 2015 draft. He’s making $1.9MM this season and becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer.
