Pistons Sign Stanley Umude To Camp Contract

The Pistons have officially signed free agent guard Stanley Umude, per RealGM’s transaction log. According to Keith Smith of Spotrac (Twitter link), it’s a non-guaranteed training camp contract.

Umude, who went undrafted out of Arkansas in 2022, signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Detroit last September and was waived before the regular season began. He spent most of his rookie year as an affiliate player for the Motor City Cruise, the Pistons’ G League team, earning a brief NBA call-up when he signed a 10-day contract with Detroit in February.

Umude appeared in just one NBA game, but was a rotation regular for the Cruise throughout the NBAGL’s Showcase Cup and regular season. He played in 43 total games for Motor City, averaging 15.4 points and 5.1 rebounds in 27.5 minutes per contest, with a shooting line of .414/.369/.775.

The Pistons are carrying 14 players on guaranteed standard contracts and a pair on two-way deals, so it’s possible Umude will given the opportunity to compete for the final 15-man or two-way spot on the regular season roster. If he’s waived before the season begins, the 24-year-old looks like a good candidate to rejoin the Cruise as a returning rights player.

Pistons Sign Stanley Umude To 10-Day Contract

Rookie wing Stanley Umude has earned a call-up from the G League, as the Pistons announced on Friday that they’ve signed him to a 10-day contract. Umude had been playing for Detroit’s NBAGL affiliate, the Motor City Cruise.

Umude signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Pistons during the offseason after going undrafted out of Arkansas and spent training camp with the team, but didn’t earn a regular season roster spot.

Since being waived at the end of the preseason, Umude has appeared in 31 total games for the Cruise — 18 in the Showcase Cup and 13 in the G League’s regular season. In those 31 appearances, he has averaged 14.3 PPG and 4.9 RPG on .402/.356/.754 shooting in 27.0 MPG.

Detroit had an open spot on its 15-man roster after completing a two-for-one trade on deadline day, sending out Saddiq Bey and Kevin Knox in a deal for James Wiseman. As a result, no corresponding roster move will be necessary to make room on the roster for Umude, who will earn $58,493 during his 10 days as a Piston.

Because the Pistons play three games before the All-Star break, Umude’s 10-day contract won’t extend beyond All-Star weekend. It will run through February 19, at which point Detroit will have the option of signing him to a second 10-day deal.

Pistons Waive Devontae Cacok, Stanley Umude

The Pistons have waived forward Devontae Cacok and guard Stanley Umude, according to NBA.com’s official transactions log.

Both players held Exhibit 10 contracts and are likely to end up with Detroit’s G League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise. They will be eligible for a $50K bonus if they spend at least 60 days with the Cruise. Cacok signed with Detroit on Friday, while Umude joined the team in late September, shortly before the start of training camp.

The Pistons still have 16 players with fully guaranteed contracts, but they are expected to waive Kemba Walker before the deadline for rosters to be finalized Monday afternoon.

When the Lakers signed Matt Ryan and Dwayne Bacon to non-guaranteed training camp contracts earlier this month, both players received Exhibit 9 clauses in their new deals, but not Exhibit 10s, Hoops Rumors has learned.

Exhibit 9 contracts are non-guaranteed camp deals that don’t count against the cap during the preseason and offer teams some protection in the event of an injury. Exhibit 10s are similar, but also allow teams to convert the player to a two-way deal (if he’s eligible) or to give him a bonus worth up to $50K if he’s waived and then spends at least 60 days with the team’s G League affiliate.

As a general rule, a player who signs a training camp contract without an Exhibit 10 clause is usually just competing for a spot on his team’s 15-man regular season roster and won’t end up playing for the club’s G League affiliate if he doesn’t make the cut.

Langston Galloway (Pacers), Dennis Smith Jr. (Hornets), LiAngelo Ball (Hornets), Cody Zeller (Jazz), Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (Suns), and Wes Iwundu (Trail Blazers) are among the other recently signed free agents who signed Exhibit 9 – not Exhibit 10 – contracts.

Pistons Finalize Camp Roster, Announce Injury Updates

The Pistons officially announced their training camp roster on Monday, and it includes two new names. According to the team, guards Jules Bernard and Stanley Umude have signed Exhibit 10 contracts, filling out the 20-man roster.

Bernard, a 6’7″ swingman, went undrafted out of UCLA earlier this year. As a senior in 2021/22, he averaged 12.8 PPG and 4.7 RPG with a shooting line of .419/.337/.818 in 35 games (30.1 MPG). He subsequently played for the Pistons’ Summer League team in Las Vegas.

Umude, whose agreement with the Pistons was previously reported, spent his first four college seasons at South Dakota from 2017-21, averaging 21.6 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 3.0 APG as a senior in 2020/21. He transferred to Arkansas for his “super-senior” season last year and played more of a complementary role for the Razorbacks, putting up 11.9 PPG, 4.6 RPG, and 1.1 APG on .460/.371/.724 shooting in 37 games (27.8 MPG).

Like Bernard, Umude went undrafted and then played for the Pistons’ Summer League team in July. Both players will likely end up playing for the Motor City Cruise, Detroit’s G League affiliate.

Here are a few more updates from the Pistons today:

  • While Kemba Walker is listed on Detroit’s training camp roster, he’s marked as “not with team,” which had been expected. Bojan Bogdanovic is the lone Piston missing from the team’s camp roster — while NBA.com’s transaction log indicates the trade sending him to Detroit was completed last Thursday, he may still need to conduct a physical with his new team before it’s officially official.
  • In a separate press release, the Pistons announced that guard Alec Burks will miss the start of training camp as he continues his rehab following a navicular fracture. Burks will be reevaluated in three weeks, according to the team.
  • Kevin Knox (right gastroc strain) and Nerlens Noel (reconditioning / plantar fasciitis) will be limited participants to open training camp, the Pistons announced.

Pistons Signing Stanley Umude To Exhibit 10 Contract

After going undrafted last Thursday, rookie free agent Stanley Umude has agreed to sign an Exhibit 10 contract with the Pistons, sources tell Jon Chepkevich of Rookie Scale (Twitter link).

A 6’6″ shooting guard, Umude spent his first four college seasons at South Dakota from 2017-21, averaging 21.6 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 3.0 APG as a senior in ’20/21.

He transferred to Arkansas for his “super-senior” season last year and played more of a complementary role for the Razorbacks, putting up 11.9 PPG, 4.6 RPG, and 1.1 APG on .460/.371/.724 shooting in 37 games (27.8 MPG).

Umude is the second undrafted rookie reported to have reached a contract agreement with the Pistons, joining Buddy Boeheim.

While Boeheim is said to have agreed to a two-way deal, Umude’s Exhibit 10 contract will be a non-guaranteed pact that makes him eligible for a bonus of up to $50K if he’s waived before the season and joins Detroit’s G League team, the Motor City Cruise, as an affiliate player. An Exhibit 10 deal can also be converted into a two-way contract before the start of the season.

Jazz Notes: Far From Contending, Mini-Camp, Prospect Workouts

All four of the 2021/22 Conference Finalists — the Warriors, Mavericks, Celtics and Heat — proved how far the Jazz are from contending for a championship, Sarah Todd of The Deseret News opines.

Todd notes that head coach Quin Snyder, whose status remains uncertain for next season, said Utah was very close to competing at the highest level at his end-of-season press conference.

“This year, I thought that our record didn’t necessarily reflect what we could do in the playoffs. I felt like we were this close to having a spark and kicking it in and finding that unity, that extra secret sauce, and taking off. And obviously that didn’t happen,” Snyder said, per Eric Walden of The Salt Lake Tribune.

Todd disagrees. Even assuming the Jazz had advanced past Dallas in the first round (they lost in six games), Todd is doubtful the Jazz would have been able to take the Suns to seven games in the second round, as Dallas was able to do.

She also doesn’t think the Jazz would have fared any better than the Mavs did against the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, if they’d gotten past Phoenix.

Ultimately, the Todd believes the flawed roster was too much to overcome, and Utah’s front office will have a tough job improving it this summer.

Draft Notes: Early Entrant Decisions, Mintz, Obanor, Duarte

Kentucky guard Davion Mintz has withdrawn from the draft and will return to the Wildcats for another year, per an ESPN report.

Jalen Wilson (Kansas), Orlando Robinson (Fresno State), Josh Mballa (Buffalo), Moussa Cisse (Memphis), Stanley Umude (transferring to Arkansas from South Dakota), and Alex Morales (Wagner) are also pulling out of the draft in order to return to school, according to a series of tweets from Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

The NCAA’s early entrant deadline is July 7, so players who declared for the draft and are testing the waters will have until next Wednesday to either withdraw or keep their names in the pool.

  • Illinois big man Kofi Cockburn and Oral Roberts forward Kevin Obanor have entered the transfer portal but are remaining in the draft for now, according to reports from Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com and Jeff Goodman of Stadium (Twitter link). Obanor has worked out for the Warriors and Cavaliers and has auditions lined up with the Sixers and Magic, per Goodman.
  • Oregon guard Chris Duarte tells Michael Scotto of HoopsHype that he believes he should be a lottery pick in this year’s draft.
